Hi Gary. Recently got myself a flash and whilst im struggling a bit in working out how to use it, i have already had some great results. The other evening i got my children to jump off the table onto a pile of pillows while i was lying on the floor beneath them shooting upwards. Got some great images. The flash really does freeze movement. Cheers again mate!

Very timely video. Enjoying this as I'm sitting here, going through today's photo-haul. Spent a couple hours doing some water drop macro. 2-second exposures in the pitch black kitchen, flash popping off left and right. Caught a couple of nice collisions... Luckily the wife and kid are already asleep, so no glasses were broken!

Thanks Gary, really useful vlog. I finally got round to watching it as I've just got my flash out of it's box for the first time in around a year as I never really understoood what it did, and how - but now I do. All I need now is a "Glamorous Assistant" to drop a ball in a glass - and not to break it!

Thank you so much for this video it was so helpful! Just to clarify, so I just have to remove every bit of ambient light possible and as long as my shutter speed is at the flashes sync speed or slower the shot will be frozen?

Hi Gary that’s probably the most uncomplicated tutorial on flash and what it does I’ve looked at thank you, I’ve just bought a Godox TT 680 to learn how to do water droplets, do you advise it is better to use manual settings over TTL ? And am I right in assuming the camera flash settings have to be in manual mode for my Godox X1 trigger ? Thanks Paul

This has given me some indication of how to use flash but I will have to watch it a couple more times so that it goes in.Out of curiositie how do you find your cameras flash sync speed as this bit confused me
@slowlyrusting4044
@slowlyrusting4044 4 жыл бұрын
In it's simplest form, most cameras have a flash sync speed of 1/200 or 1/250 shutter speed. The cameras manual should have the info or you can Google your camera model or you can "shoot" some images at different shutter speeds until you find the FASTEST shutter speed that has the entire image showing on your LCD screen. Once you have the FASTEST shutter speed you can "shoot" at that speed or any speed slower than that (depending on the ambient light present and the effect you are trying for). The above info DOESN'T apply with HSS (high sync speed). HHS, if your camera allows it, makes it possible to "shoot" at shutter speeds faster than the cameras "normal" sync speed. Hope this makes sense.

Hi Gary - I've seen your great video a few times and now I get it ! The sentence with "as longs as the flash is the dominent light source" .... however - how do I actually measure that ? ... and another thing. Recently I used my flash outdoors and wanted to freeze some kids in the fast movements when running in the forest - they were 5-8 meters from me - 1/200 F4.0 and ISO1000 (it was a cluody day) - and the Profoto flash on 4 - as I assumed that the lower power setting the faster the flash duration would be and, therefore freeze everything - but it didn't .... sigh ! Am I up against the inverse square law here or in other words - how do I freeze movements 5-8 meters from me and still preserve the ambient light in the background so that doesn't go completely dark ?

Hi, I need bit help with my flash, sometimes off camera flash when fires it wont show in the picture. And above 200/s even if it is 8000/s,it continue to work with 200/s until I set HSS ( I mean my picture its not cover half ore more by a curtain) Its not a good communication with my camera 5D mk ii? or because of my flash is MK 600 ? It has to do with the reason not use it for quiet some time? Thank you for your time
@GaryGough
@GaryGough 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gina, If you switch your flash on, your camera will be restriced to 1/200 sec unless you switch your flash to HSS.
