What are the Basics of Flash Photography? Modes: 1. Manual: change output manually. 2. TTL: automatically determines output. 3. Multi: more control... set flash to fire multiple times + intervals. Flash Power: 1/1 → 1/256 | brightest → darkest - Brighter can increase recycle time. - Adrian typically shoots 1/32 ~ 1/16. Flash Zoom: Spread/size of flash, - Some have auto setting - Generally, match to lens eg. 35mm 85mm etc Channels: communication between flash & trigger - Match between flash & trigger - If multiple photographers, use separate channels Groups: can assign different flashes to each group

I'm sure someone has already said this or something similar but multi mode is how in like a skateboard magazine you'll see a photo with like multiple images of a skater doing a single trick in one photo, it'll be a long exposure and the flash will illuminate the subject multiple times as it's changing position.

I have watched dozens of videos and no one talks about the power output mode. I’ve just assumed all these years that 0 in the middle is the flash deciding how much power it will use. And anything plus or minus and you are overriding the ttl decision making from the camera. But absolutely no one even mentions it in these flash videos.

Well done! I use both ttl and manual. For speed I use ttl, when I have time, i use manual. The nice thing with ttl is flash compensation. When the light changes frequently, flash compensation is a must for me. I guess it just comes down to personal preference. Thanks for sharing.

A view from the UK. Oh!, where do i start? Mr Lard, the major DSLR camera manufacturers have gone into great expense to develop a flashlight that is completely compatible to their product range. That means, in laymen's terms, they are the left and right hand of a pair of gloves. The idea of a flash is to assist the shooter to get themselves an acceptably exposed photo in difficult lighting conditions. This can be done with said flashlight Through The Lens, (TTL), AND part of that is reading the light meter inside the camera to determine how much "extra" light is required. Dear viewer EVERYTHING ELSE is purely for artistic uses. Of all the things in your camera bag you should leave on "Auto" is your flash. C'mon Mr Lard, be honest with the people. Tell them they don't need a flash unit as complex as the one you are describing here. I quote you; "I leave my flash set to about 1/8th power setting", why. Are you using it to fill-in only? TTL will do that.

Hi not sure if you can answer this but I recently purchased a tamron 150-600mm lens that shoots very dark photos. It doesn’t matter daytime or dusk they are overall dark. Could using an external flash make up for some of that darkness? Or would that not really be helpful during the day? I mainly shoot birds. Thanks if you can help
