Amazing, its new to me. The hybrids being immune or mostly immune makes sense. It would be interesting to see photo's. Here in Australia there seems to have been confusion about these 2 species, where they grow, how fast they grow and the long term appearance. Now if I've got it right the Mexican(robusta) is the tall thin one which can grow fast. The Californian( filifera) is very thick trunked, wider crown and grows much slower to achieve any great height. I hope I've got it correct.

Great info Gary. We grow a mix of Mexican (robusta) and California (Filifera) fan palms here in the San Antonio Texas area. Probably 80% Mexican and 20% California planted. The Mexicans aren't quite a cold hardy and get wiped out every 20-30 years and the Californias live on as they can handle colder conditions. I prefer the Filifera and have a young one growing in my backyard. Given the heat, sun and lack of fog (and often rain) the fungus shouldn't be an issue. Both are exquisite plants when in the right conditions.

The orioles make nests in my brahea edulis. One time a snake somehow climbed up the trunk and got the eggs unfortunately. I was surprised that he could slither up the trunk and extend out onto the frond. So can you treat the black diamond scale with fungicide? I have seen a lot of these die lately in Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach. What I have seen is the new emerging spear and fronds looks crumpled up and then the tree dies. These are mature filiferas that have survived for a very long time up until now so I wonder why all the sudden this is happening.
