After a few years of starting my tomatoes and peppers indoors I’ve noticed that certain areas of my trays have better germination rates and plant survival rates than others. And it seems like it does this even though the seeds are the same variety coming from the same seed packet. I could be wrong but I concluded that the heat mat might have hot spots that ware essentially cooking some areas of the tray. Last year I used my vacuum sealer to fill some bags with water and double sealed them to prevent leaks. I put these bags between the mat and the tray so that the heat from the mat gets distributed through the water before heating the tray. I’m sure I lose some heat in the process but it seemed to give me more consistent results.

Love your channel. Such good information. Used heat mats last year but when I took the temperature of the soil it was in the 90s. Also tried to raise the level and still in the 80s. I was growing some perennial seeds and I think I cooked them as I had to start a new tray. The ambient temp in the basement is about 62. Anybody have any suggestions?

Maybe you already have a warm spot in your house? I use the top of my water heater and it works perfectly. This is a solution that allowed me to avoid buying one more thing that needs to be stored, is going to break etc. Plus the heat used does not cost me anything and would otherwise go to waste. Others use heated floors or on top of the fridge.

Thanks Gary, some great tips. I discovered your channel when researching 'how to grow ginger / turmeric'. Your video on 'Starting ginger etc' a few weeks (12 to 16 weeks) early is brilliant. I live in the UK (zone 9a) and we can have quite cold weather. I learnt from you that ginger needs to be started as early as December. My questions: a) When starting ginger or turmeric, should I use a heat mat to keep the "starter soil" at above 65F. b) If using a heat mat without a thermostat, how do you ensure that it's not getting too hot (or remaining too cold). c) There's such a wide variety of heat mats with differing quality controls & outputs that it is mind boggling to select the 'right one'. Would you mind recommending one or more brands with thermostatic control? Cheers...

Hi Gary, this is kind of bizarre I think. Not sure if I'm just lucky or is this normal. So here goes, i got a 2'x4' heat mat for plants on Amazon. Also got seed trays with covers, and a grow light. I mixed up some coco coir and perlite, dampened it up nice and moist so I could clump it together with no water dripping out. Filled all the cells with the mix and then planted 4 types of seeds, one being Romaine. Two days later all the romaine sprouted and is ¼" high. Is this extremely fast or does romaine always come up that quick. One of the other seeds in another cell popped up also. I have had the mat on 24hrs and the light 16. I never expected them to come up this quick. Is this normal? I'm not complaining by any means

@THERUSTEDGARDEN Жыл бұрын
The domes create too much humidity imo. In garage the dome wont do much anyway for heat. The heat mat is key and I would keep it on until temps get more in to the upper 40's The heat helps the roots for sure. Once germination occurs REMOVE THE HEAT MATS from under the plants!!! They're really not needed after the plants germinate unless you want to keep the relevant temperature at a certain point (outdoor colder areas of the world). If in a greenhouse, you shouldn't need them after germing.
