Hello Gary... very informative and great videos.. I've gone through your videos and I wish you could provide a demonstration video on large container gardening on Avocados and citrus. I've looked all over the web but there are no videos showing us what can be achieved if planted in containers. I always see 5 gallon plantings and ofcourse they always look good, but it would be nice to see a healthy 10 year old avocado or citrus "tree" growing and being maintained in a container. I wish we could actually see your friends avocado tree that had the 70+ avocados and see what is required to achieve the same results. Thanks again for all the helpful information... thanks!

Thanks for your advice on planting my new Fuerte avacado tree where my old Satsuma plums were at
@NMW804 жыл бұрын
I just ordered a fuerte avo tree. I was looking for someone who owned one to get cuttings off for ages but I just thought ah well I will buy another one. I don’t want anymore huge trees cos I’m out of room now. I already have heaps of avocado seedlings growing and a bacon avocado tree so I don’t want anymore avo trees that will turn into a full size tree. What I do want though is cutting off other people who own avo trees so I can use them to graft onto my already existing avo trees. I have spent so much money on fruit trees and plants and I don’t want to have to spend 100 every time I want another variety of avocado. Are you firm the US? I’m in Australia. If anyone reads this and is in Australia can you please let me know if you are interested in swapping some fruit tree cuttings. I can even graft onto some rootstock for someone who can help me out with avo cuttings from any other variety. I have hass and fuerte. We can do swaps and I can make them grafted multi fruit trees too. I just don’t want to have to keep on buying full trees every time I want a cutting it’s so annoying. I have severe health issues and I don’t want to spend money I don’t have on fruit trees which I am growing to save money but it’s already costing me so much money to get all my plants so far.
@NMW804 жыл бұрын
I don’t think we are aloud to send cuttings over seas due to pests and diseases. It would take too long to get there too and die most likely. That’s why I said only people from Australia but Maybe I’m wrong maybe they don’t care about cuttings as long as they are safe and not carrying pests or diseases in the packaging I’m not sure.

Your videos are awesome. I learned so much. On how much fertilizer to use. Some videos mention using one cup, three times a year. However these examples are small on 2-3-4 year old trees. How do you properly fertilize larger trees? How do you determine how much to give trees 10 to 50 years old and 10 to 30 feet tall

Thank you Gary for all your explanations. I have a question, what is the warmest temperature an avocado can live happily in? Many thanks 😊

About 95, gets hotter, go out a few times in the afternoon and spritz, and prewater the day before a coming hot day.

Hope this reply is not too late. A healthy avocado tree grows really well between 80 and 100 degrees F. The newer growth gets burnt at around 110 degrees.

I'm very excited to try a soil mix with no compost incorporated into it. However, I worry about the unsustainable nature of peat moss. Can coconut coir achieve the same end, or will it behave like leaf matter and contribute to root rot?
@GarysBestGardening2 жыл бұрын
In my opinion there is a lot, lot more peat moss in the World than coconut coir. Northern Europe, Siberia, Canada all have hundreds of shallow lakes of peat. Also coconut coir is too freshly killed and may harbor diseases as it decomposes. It also makes foliage take on a "orange" tinge that may be due to some mineral or tanins that it contains. Coco coir has done some fabulous marketing to encourage people to purchase it. Vermiculite would be a substitute for peat but don't use more than about 5% of the volume.

No wonder my trees are struggling. I mix in my soil with compost. Not only is it struggling, the soil settles as it decomposes and now my tree is about 3" below grade...

Can you make a video of how to pick avocados that are in huge high trees and how to prune them, How much to prune them too. Also do you sell your avocado trees or cuttings to Australia or are you not aloud to due to disease control etc. I know plants are probably not aloud to be sold worldwide due to pests that can sneak in to the country in potting soils.

A question around yellowing of the leaves. On planting, I applied the following fertilizers to my young avocado trees: -chicken manure, blood and bone, gypsum and a chemical fertilizer. (Leftovers sprayed on other plants.) A short time after, I made a mixture of molasses, seaweed and fish to spray on my freshly planted avocados, to help first year root growth. Some plants leaves have turned yellow. I had been told in the past that this was caused by a lack of magnesium, so Epson salts was to be put on the root area. I have heard you talk about yellowing of leaves to be a lack of nitrogen. Could you comment on yellowing leaves and also what a lack of magnesium does. I have unlearned so much by watching your videos and would like help in this area. Much appreciated.

my little grafted avocado tree ( has tree) I bought down here in Australia from our local nursery “Bunnings Australia” has now been on the ground for about 5 months I.e since June...now it’s about 2 feet tall and lushed green,...and now is starting to grow shoots, blooms and buds....is that good ,or is that abnormal and no good....should I let it go grow to this stage and just leave it alone..or should I prune so much off it’s blooms for now and wait a little while more until it’s a little bit taller.

Can I use normal potting soil or garden soil mixed in with the sand, peat moss, charcoal, pumice, perlite etc. not the potting mix that’s full of dead trees composted. Just the potting/garden soil I mean so it has some soil in it. I was still going to put the organic mulch soil only on top layers of my pots. I am going to grow most of my trees in pots cos I don’t have the room and I don’t want to live here for ever.

How come I’d never seen a Gem avocado tree in NSW Australia......does it have other name besides “Gem”
@craigkeller3 жыл бұрын
Hey Emily, gem is the initials of the man who developed them. I’ve been trying to get some to plant here on the big island of Hawaii. There’s a nursery that propagates them in California they said they would sell me a minimum of 2000 which is just a few to many. I’m going to try talk with Gary this next week to see if he can acquire a couple dozen for me . Brokaw Nursery LLC is the grower. Good luck! Aloha
