Very informative. As I'm getting later in my 60's I've migrated from drops to straight to risers with moderate sweep. The key is to keep riding in as comfortable position as possible and changing the bars is a good way of doing it and not too expensive.

This was a great idea because you have an eye for bars that others overlook, such as the Wald longhorns and motocross bars. And your builds prove that cruiser bars look great and feel great on mtbs and road bikes alike. I've installed them on mine based on your examples. The graph at the end was inspired.

thanks for the explanation on these different bars. I'm trying out the vo crazy bars on a 80s trek 830 and i like it a lot. not as much backsweep as the losco or albatross, plus forward facing nubbins for a "hoods" position for more aero. theyre 31.8 so im using a quill-to-threadless adapter. riding 21.1 quill bullmoose bars on another '81 schwinn le tour. so fun. i had bought them to try on the trek, but they came in a different quill diameter, that happened to fit the schwinn road bike, and it all worked out.

Good comparison. Just installed moto style bars, bmx bars actually, with a 9" rise on a 90" trekking bike and tilted a fair amount towards the seat. Looks wacky, but boy is it relaxed. I struggle with shoulder injuries so hoping this will solve it. Now on to electrifying the bike 😁

This is for people over 50 or even 40 or on the heavy side. Any bar that is wide and high not dropdown is good enough. Change the tire to 1.9" wide and wide saddle with springs, make sure chromoly tubing aluminum rims, total weight should be less than 20lbs. You can do a lot of work out and ride some distance with comfort, no pain in the neck, wrist, and bum. You got some cool bikes.

if you're not sure what metal something is made of, put a strong magnet on it. if the magnet doesn't stick, it's aluminum, if the magnet sticks a little, it's stainless steel, if you can't get the magnet off, it's steel and your handle bars now have a love bump.

I want fully adjustable handlebars, not any one set shape. I generally prefer the hardtail mtn bike straight bars. But oftentimes the top tube is a bit too long for me and it would be so nice to be able to make that up with adjustable handlebars. I don't know how it could be engineered, seems like it would need a mix of approaches in one thing. I'll go look noq.

Now I ride bullhorns and found that little bit nervous for long rides and it's thinness give me a headache to make the thicker. I've seen Surely handlebar, interested in it, but it is too pricey. There I kind a like Moth handlebar, but it be too wide. I take bullhorn handlebar because more typical MTB handlebar just pissed me off with going through doors and etc. Wish something with 30-45 degree sweep in horizontal plane and which I can push down to around 30 degree on vertical plane. Will appreciate any info even if it be links for forums where I can ask about. Thanks anyway for reading it. 👍

NONE of the available options in handlebars can make a claim to being ergonomically correct, especially not the sweeps. I cannot understand this. How difficult can this be? Sit on a bike, stretch your arms out to a comfortable position, and look at the natural alignment of the wrists. It is NOT the same as the angle of any of these bars where a rider's hands normally rest. At least in the case of a straight bar, a resting position for the hands is essentially horizontal, but a lot of weight winds up being placed on a bent wrist. An ergonomic bar would sweep back gradually, and then turn slightly outward again to meet the natural resting angle of the wrist. Currently available sweeps do not do that. And, as a result, they are not optimally comfortable, and they steer like a boat tiller. I could design a better bar in an afternoon. That bar would align with the wrist while not over loading that joint.
