By education, I’m a chemical engineer and have worked for a decade for a local water district, insuring high standards of water quality. I bought a home outside of the district, and rely on well water. Unfortunately, the well water had a very high Iron content at over 40 ppm. It’s a volcanic area, so sulfides also were present. The water out of the well was not potable, horrible smell and color. The sellers had spent a small fortune on treatment, using a series of 1 to 5 micron filters, water softener and charcoal filter cartridges. Still, the water in the home was of poor quality. They eventually gave up, and relied on bottled water among with a large storage tank filled once a month bu truck. The solution was a simple one, and I recommend this to any reader dealing with iron, bacteria and other contaminates. There are just a few, easy steps. The total cost, with DIY installation is under $1100. A vast savings compared to products on the market that advertise similar results for whole house filtration. Here are the steps. I’ll add that I used 1” Pex tubing along with SharkBite fittings. No special tools needed and they provide leak proof couplings. No soldering, no glues. 1). The first filter should be a 5 micron, 10” x4” sediment filter, ahead of everything else. I mounted mine on the exterior of my home where the water comes in from well. 2) On the inside of garage, I started with. Chlorine injection system. They vary in price, mine was $650. That included a 30 gallon chorine tank, injection pump, mixer pipe, flow sensor and all fittings. It’s important to mount the primary 5 micron filter ahead of the flow sensor, since sediment can cause the flow sensor to stick in the open circuit condition. Instead of using gallons of bleach in the tank, I use concentrated pellets designed for well sanitation. 4 cups of the pellets and clean tap water does the trick to achieve a 5% chlorine content in the tank. 3). 6’ from the chlorine mixer fitting comes the first 20” 5 micron filter. The filter is adequate to filter the fine sediment, the larger oxidized iron matter and most solid contaminates. 4) Next in line is a 20” , 1 micron filter. This will trap a high percentage, if not all of the oxidized iron. Chlorine oxidizes iron, effectively and also kills bacteria. Both are filtered once through the 1 micron filter. 5). I called a couple of water treatment outfits and located a large, used whole house filter housing. It previously was used to soften water. It was full of a media that could be emptied, then the inside of the cylinder cleaned with flushing. The cylinder had a fitting on top that could be unscrewed, and had 1” female ports for water in, water out. I purchased a 50 lb bag of Activated Carbon, filled the cylinder and proceeded to install it inline with the system. The Activated Carbon will remove any chlorine in the water. 6) The final filter I installed is a 10” x 6” Carbon filter. This was an optional step, for best measure. It’s designed to be the final step in capturing any and all chorine, any other potential contaminates. The end result, I have almost pure water as per my own testing and that of 2 independent labs. The water is on the soft side, so I have no use for a softener. I’d recommend only adding a softener system only if needed, after the prior steps are followed and your water is tested. I buy the filters from Amazon, rarely do any of them exceed $20. I change all of mine once every 2 months. The Activated Carbon will last no less than a year and most likely 2. All tallied, my total installed price was $950. Depending on the chlorination system you choose, you may spend a few hundred more. Mine is a very basic injection system, off of Amazon for $650. The filter cartridge assemblies average around $50 apiece. It took me 5 hours to completely install. For kicks and giggles, the least expensive whole house Reverse Osmosis system I priced was $7500, which had a water quality yield equal to my end result.

Hello, we have a sandpoint well for a lake cabin in Minnesota acquired a few years ago. At the time Culligan had rental ‘tanks’ for softener (not a complete system) which they would change out about once a month or such. They quit doing such and now we have another rental but it is a normal system with a salt/brine container and the resin tank and the old style of regeneration control on a timer. Anyway the water from hot water has had a light smell but it is there even why when we acquired the property. Now with the new system at the beginning of this year with the new water softener, the cold water seemed good, however hot water still had that smell. We did have the Stainless Steel HTP Everlast hot water tank sanitized with chlorine from our local plumber service which really didn’t help in the end. This water tank is Stainless and has no anode rod to deal with for replacement. Now that I am also smelling and I taste something for the cold tap water I am back to thinking of something from the well water side is causing the problem. The new water softener has eliminated any Iron Stain’s in the toilets, which we did get when the Culligan Resin Tanks would be getting depleted. So we do know there is large concentrations of Iron in the water. However, with the smell and now taste of the water with a new water softener. What is the best method of filtering the bad water minerals etc with our current setup? We have our the water softener company coming back this week and I am trying to educated myself with options to get good tasting water and no smell when taking a shower. Thanks you for any input!!
@water_estore4 ай бұрын
The only difference between hot and cold water is the hot water heater, so the smell comes from there. I would have them do a sulfur test on the cold water. Gary, I think Im a little more enthusiastic about use of whole house filters for effective iron removal than you. Ive had terrific success with ferric iron removal using a big blue 4.5X20 5 micron string wound filter (looks like you've got a melt blown cartridge there) at the point of entry on my system. With just this filter on-line (everything else in bypass), the water goes from a brownish tint to absolutely crystal clear. I originally installed it to protect the rest of the system from sediment, but was pleasantly surprised when it also stripped away all the ferric iron. My understanding is that these types of filters are not effective against ferrous iron, however, since there is no particulate. Im getting about 10,000 to 15,000 gallons of service out of these cartridges before they load up to the point where replacement is necessary from loss of water pressure. For me thats about two months. There appears to never be an issue with blow though, which I periodically test for. I dont appear to have much if any ferrous iron. Im relying on my calcite neutralizer and iron pro softener to handle that job to the extent necessary. It all seems to work very well. I really enjoy your videos, they are very well done.

Thank you for your comment. I am glad this is working for you and it give families another option. I have never had any luck using this type of filter for iron.

In any case, a sediment filter is a great thing to use upstream from an iron filter. I live in Central Kentucky, and we have well water in our iron. Plus, I have a creek out back, and I don't have the time, money or inclination to dig a deep well. Any iron that your sediment filter stops is iron that you don't have to remove with your water softener.

I have a very basic 1/2 cu. ft. iron filter using Birm media and an aeration tank ahead of it. A tiny compressor keeps that tank about 1/3 full of air; the incoming water is sprayed into the tank and falls to the water surface. Aerated water is then drawn off and sent to the iron filter. Believe it or not, my Birm is eight years old and still doing its job. Our iron is around 6ppm. I'm just about to upgrade to a newer, bigger system because we have two homes to supply now. And of course that Birm must be reaching the end of its life. But I have no complaints. For an initial outlay of around $1,500 I've had beautiful water for years.

That seemed to the do the trick for the sulphur smell, but we still get discoloration in the toilet, usually after a day or two. This leads me to believe it’s oxidizing the iron. What I can’t find is if my tannin levels are causing the issue .21ppm or my iron 2.8ppm? I live in Canada and in a rural area. We don't have animals close by and its a dug well approx 15ft. We dont run out of water very often as we use it wisely. I do have a water softener and keep making sure that it is topped up and make sure the medium does not bridge. My problem is that after I boil the kettle there is a white sediment in the kettle. It used to be once in a while i would use vinegar and clean it and it would last for a while but lately its almost every other week. I dont know what the sediment is so dont know how to treat it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you in advance

But I was wondering what is the best well water test that test for everything including bacteria. I'm concerned bc I'm not sure where my well water comes from. I know nothing about wells. But I also want to find a filtration system. I'm not sure if I should get one for the entire well or just the kitchen faucet. Im really overwhelmed with all this. Do you have a phone # or email?

Hello, first, I have an official lab sample in progress. However, while I'm waiting, I'm very sure my main problem with my new well is going to be iron. The builder did install a cheap 2.5" sediment filter which was clogged up pretty quick. However, on bypass, there's really no change in the water appearance. It is slightly brown when first coming out, but when sitting in a toilet for example, it gets a little darker. Also, it smells like rust. It's not SUPER bad, and there's no sulfur odor. I have AquaDur test strips for hardness and they're indicating very soft to soft water on their scale. I don't have any issues with getting soapy in the shower, for example. I'm assuming, after official results come back, I'm likely going to need to address iron. If I'm looking for something for iron without a bunch of other fancy things, what would you recommend I start looking at?

What are some solutions for treating well water with rotten egg smell? It’s definitely coming from well as I tested at the test tap by the incoming water. Both iron and manganese present. Morton 34,000 grain water softener does a good job removing the iron, 1 person occupied 2 story home with 2 bathrooms. Well is only set 80 feet down. 55 gallon water pressure tank. I ran the outside hose for an hour to flush the system. It seems to clear up. 2 weeks later the smell is back. I’ve lived here for 1 year. And for probably 6 months I didn’t have any issues. No change mechanically. Thought maybe the water is becoming stagnant since I’m only one person and not using much water. I recently purchased 2- 10” whole house water filters ( U30-S-S18 ) one sediment and one carbon but I’m hesitant to try it.

Hi Gary. Great video. We have a home well with hard water (332 ppm), pH (7.4), Total Iron (1ppm), IRB (2200 cfu/mL), Sulfate (42ppm) and high sedimentation with conductivity of 707 uS/cm. Our goal is to remove sedimentation, soften water and remove the orange(ish) fixture staining presumably caused by a combination of Iron and IRB. One company in town is recommending a chlorination system with only a 7.5 gal tank followed by a green sand back wash filter followed by a softener followed by a big blue filter (possibly a carbon filter?). We don't love the idea of using chlorine. Can you comment on their approach or provide other recommendations to achieve our goals? Thanks!
@zacharycole32672 жыл бұрын
BTW. I"m not convinced that the IRB is a major problem, because there isn't any 'slime' in, for example, toilet fixtures. So I guess another way to ask the question, is it reasonable to use a backwash filter for the heavy sediment and ferric iron in combination with a water softener for the hardness and ferrous iron? Thanks.

Dr. Gundry who has 2 practices in California and posts to KZbin says iron ages humans. So definitely don’t take it as a supplement. I say if you have iron in your well water, it would serve you well to install one of these systems. My folks have had an air over media iron-sulfur filter for about 38 years to treat the slimy iron. It has improved their quality of life immeasurably. But they do not back flush it every 3 days. Maybe every 2 weeks before they run their water softener.

What do you think about hydrogen peroxide injection, catalytic carbon backwashing filter, and then upflow calcium carbonate tank to raise pH? My other thought was again h2o2 with a manganese dioxide media with calcium carbonate mix and air injection. My final system for consideration is another backwashing system utilizing katalox media. What would you recommend?Family of 4. Well produces plenty of water under normal conditions.
