Areet mate, excellent video and I know that spot well as i go up that way alot. Right in the middle of the loch infront of that bay when the tide is running hard it causes a whirlpool affect and the fish you can pull up during that time is epic. Keep them coming mate 🎣

Should try fishing at Gallanach mate, far end of Oban after the ferry terminal. That’s where I go, plenty spurdogs, dogfish and thornback rays. Caught a 10lb spurdog a couple of weeks ago. Great video👍

So off I went, down to Ardchattan Priory, waited for low tide and thought I am never going to be able to cast that far. The weed bed went out almost as far as I could see. Then along comes this little old man and says” ouch y will nah catch a thing there. It’s far to shallow”. Well needless to say I never got a bite, so went back up to the rocks at Dunstaffnage Castle and managed to get a couple of pollock. So still thinking what am I doing wrong I watched the video again. Then I spotted it. I had been in totally the wrong place. What I noticed this time in the video is what you, and Michael Bird in his video on the loch, call the priory is actually Ardchattan church. The priory, and priory gardens, are 2 miles further on. I have been told since then that Ardchattan church is a well known brilliant place to fish, with a massive drop off into deep water. And typically the one place on loch Etive I have not tried yet. So I am off there tomorrow will let you know how I get on. Moral of this story is for me to watch and learn :) Thanks again.
@fishingintheukgarywood3 жыл бұрын
Ah yeah its straight down from the church when we first went we were told its called the priory. Good luck hopefully your efforts pay off and you catch from there.

@garylawlor22884 жыл бұрын
@@fishingintheukgarywood it looks just like a shallow estuary mark, in a sort of a way, especially to any novice anglers out there, but I guess it is a glacial feature similar to the fjords in Norway so must be deep. Also the spurs like a bit of water depth I believe.
@stuartey92643 жыл бұрын
What am I doing wrong? I live in Dunbeg by Connel. Not new to fishing but saw this vid and it inspired me, so decided to try hit some spurdog with new kit. Been out, about and all round loch Etive. From just down on the rocks by Dunstaffnage castle all over the Banawe side and down to the old ferry jetty by taynuilt. Not caught anything other than crab and starfish. Have to admit been out about 6 times and only used Squid as bait. Any tips on bait, location etc.
@fishingintheukgarywood3 жыл бұрын
Try using mackerel for bait straight down from the priory, that's where we usually fish from the shore. Fishing low water to high seems to be good there.
@stuartey92643 жыл бұрын
@@fishingintheukgarywood Thanks for the reply. I. Was just down past the wee jetty down from Ardchattan Priory. There’s a bit of grass to park on there. Had a lovely day in the sun but the fish hatted the squid. At least I didn’t blank there, that’s if a crab counts. Think crabs like squid more than fish do :). Anyway thanks for the excellent vids. Broke my shoulder quite badly a few years ago and the fly rod gives me to much pain now, so still a novice at shore fishing. Will go back tomorrow and give the mackerel a try.

@fishingintheukgarywood6 ай бұрын
@jawsko thanks, it's straight down from Ardchattan church. You park in the little carpark accoross the road from the church and head down to the water there should be a little stream on your left if your in the right place.

Great video, thank you. Would you be able to give any tips for catching spurs in etive (or just catching Spurdog in general)? Eg what features of the seabed do they prefer, best times of day? thanks again
@fishingintheukgarywood4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yeah no problem. What worked best for us was a pulley rig with size 5/0 hooks with a fillet of mackerel for bait. Your hook snood needs to be wire or minimum of 60lb amnesia because we found that they just bit straight through the cheap 60lb mono on the snood and we lost a few decent ones. The fish move around but once they turn up you should get a few at once and they say night time is better for them but they can be caught through the day, they seem to prefer the deeper water.
@masterblob71964 жыл бұрын
@@fishingintheukgarywood perfect, thank you for the advice. I'll look into getting some wire for the trace.
