pretty cool.. a slightly better vacuum pump would get you low enough to get x rays...if the power supply allows it.. keep it up!

I nearly bought a set of 18 of these of all different gasses for about $150 on eBay to make into a kind of framed wall display but decided against it because I thought since they were cold cathode they will probably have a short life of probably only a few hundred hours due to sputtering on the inside of the tubes, making it not worth it. what do you think?

Hello! I don't have experience with the lifetime of such tubes but as you mentioned you will get sputtering near the electrodes. In my homemade tube I can already see a thin layer of copper on the inside of the glass... But 150 dollar for 18 tubes is really cheap. I had to pay 70 euro just for the single Balmer hydrogen tube.
