LOVE the manifold and the future labeling to be done. I do NG distribution and I can count on one hand the number of places I’ve been to with organized and labeled lines in the house (not counting commercial installs). It’s usually a haphazard assortment of lines and fittings, though some of them are older homes that have gone through generations of handymen and plumbers (not to mention code revisions).

You always do a neat and well planned job, as I know you have done construction for years. However, one thing I noticed is you should have used "yellow" teflon tape, as it is heavier duty PTFE tape used for gas piping. Most gas fitters used that plus Tru-Blue or similar medium density brush on compound for all gas piping.Thanks for all of the great videos! Can't wait till you are finished.

looking great from over here in the uk! cant believe the inspector gets to specify where you have electrical outlets, can you have the final inspection before the floors are finished, that way just remove the unwanted outlets after the inspector has left. a quick tip from a plumber.... ptfe tape should be wound clockwise around the thread so that as the fittings are tightened the tape is pulled tighter into the thread. It was hard to see from the time lapse but it looked like yours was wound the other way.

Technically the inspector isn't specifying he exact locations of the electrical outlets. What's happening is code requirements, which is there must be an outlet within 6' of any break in a wall, and no more than 12' apart. As long as he follows those guides he's good. Since he was using stub walls, he thought that the code wasn't required. He took it upon himself to use in-floor outlets, placing them at those particular locations, the center points of each stub wall provided the minimum number he would need by code.

When I built my 4500 sqft house, that gas line was a hassle, not only here in MI you have to know total potential use of gas at all times thru your entire house but there is a formula on gas line size that comes into your house and reduces as you keep pigtailling different lines into it; I remember my intake was 2 1/2" and kept on down sizing until the last potential use end; one issue I had was that we had to reduce it with bell reducers and not ring reducers, they said the ring reducers can crack; your setup looks beautiful, just be careful at your state codes, also, if you put a instant water heater, that alone requires a 3/4" size to give you continuous hot water, I had one that was 230000 btu and originally had 1/2" on it, every so often my hot water got cold right in the middle of the shower, eventually we figured it out and did a 3/4", that was on my previous house, this one has a dual heater, it required 1" pipe line; But than again, I don't know how LP rules are, I am strictly talking of NG from the city; one thing I miss from the old house is the bathroom infloor water based heating system; I had that everywhere in the house before this, on this one just had to move fast and didn't have the time for that. Nice work so far on your part. Dan

@PAPSROYALAPIARY
@PAPSROYALAPIARY 4 жыл бұрын
@@FJB2020 it all depends on the demand you subject it too, but also codes force you to stay in the most usage range not the least usage, kind of like one outlet every 12lf of wall, if you know what I mean, you might never have all outlets running in the same time, but the inspector considers that in his/her decision to pass you or not. Good luck to you, as I mentioned, when it comes to LP, I am in a unknown territory so I can't speak much to it. Dan

I've had problems with unions leaking before. You might want to look at a black iron nipple/coupling with right/left hand threads that will replace the union and possibly seal better. I also concur on putting never seize on the union threads so it will snug up tighter.

TIP: You may have installed your railing floor receptacles already, but if you haven't, may I suggest running them on a switch along with your wall outlet near the railing. Earth or ground bonding is used to reduce the risk of electric shocks to anyone who may touch two separate metal parts when there is a fault somewhere in the supply of electrical installation. By connecting bonding conductors between particular parts, it reduces the voltage there might have been between them. Certainly in the UK it is nothing to do with lightning, lightning would laugh at a cable that small! In the UK they don't tell us where we can put sockets/outlets, just where we can't put them. Also we can't work on gas without being qualified and registered. Love your channel!!
@skoalsoldier
@skoalsoldier 3 жыл бұрын
The bonding requirement is only because he is using CSST instead of iron piping. CSST has very thin walls and a high voltage electrical charge can burn a hole in it. The bonding cable prevents this.

You may want to make sure that your system has enough capacity to run everything at the same time. Your pipe may not be large enough when you run it through a straight manifold. I don't know that it's not large enough, I am just saying you may want to confirm how many appliances that size pipe (including in-floor boiler heating) will support.
@wickedkool705
@wickedkool705 2 жыл бұрын
That’s what I was wondering too. I have 3/4” ng main that only supplies a water heater, boiler and a future cooktop. 3/4” supply from meter is just enough for 3 appliances. Ideally I would have 1” main.
@franklong6269
@franklong6269 2 жыл бұрын
@@wickedkool705 I am NOT a gas piping expert, but with plumbing water piping, the size of your main line in from the utility is dependent on how many water fixtures are in the house. Gas is probably different because is compresses and a liquid doesn't. So probably the pressure of the gas line is what drives how many appliances it can drive. But you would still need a large enough main coming into the house.
@jimengland8125
@jimengland8125 4 жыл бұрын
Are going to run elevated pressure (2 psi) in the house? If not my concern would be flow capacity in your runs at 11" wc. Especially on the long runs. I would also recommend gas cocks(ball valves) with a side tap for easy pressure testing/troubleshooting. Enjoy the series BTW

Looking great, Paul! So glad you did well on your electrical inspection. Bonding the metal gas and water pipes also prevents you from having either system becoming energized with AC - imagine a rodent gnaws thru a wire and the bare hot lays against a pipe. That sucks having to install those recepts by the railing - the floor boxes were a good idea. Couple questions on the gas install - I thought you had to use the yellow teflon tape for petroleum applications?? Also, I thought the gas system had to be reduced in diameter as it went along , according to calcs for the equipment it feeds??? Much easier if you can just run a 3/4" the whole way, though. Definitely not a plumber here and have NO experience with propane (yet). Awesome progress and love the attention to detail!

Technically yes you are supposed to be yellow Teflon which is thicker than the white. The guy that taught me 20 years ago was to use white Teflon and pipe dope on top of that. Long time ago but I have had continued success doing it that way so I continue. I really should just use the yellow. I don’t really have any other reason for not using it other than just doing what I’ve done for years. As far as the gas system goes I will be doing a 2 psi second stage regulator and then maxitrol line regulators at my appliances. I’ll do a video on it.

As always, looks great, Paul! Have you considered using a tankless water heater rather than a boiler for your in-floor heat? I'm going to use a takagi 180,000 BTU tankless heater fueled by LP for my in-floor heat. It was engineered by a company that designs systems online. And from my research, I'm quite confident in the tankless heater rather than a boiler. With a boiler, you heat the water to 140° or higher, and then have to mix it with cold water so you don't have water too hot for the in concrete pecs tubing.

The teflon tape you used is technically not for gas lines. The gas can degrade that tape over time. There is a gas teflon tape. Its on a yellow roll as opposed to blue. It’s easier to put your wall supports on before you put your manifold on the wall.

I hope you put plugs in the unused taps in the manifold. Never depend on a valve only. Gas fitting 101 is never leave an open pipe.

I recommend no tape , use a paste , pieces of tape can break off and end up blocking orifices off causing problems !

Can you use flex gas line for outside of the house? I'm planning to install a BBQ station using the natural gas as fuel.

John, there are some flexible CSST (corrugated stainless steel tubing) piping that is approved for outside, direct bury use. They have a specialized jacket on the pipe to protect it. If you decide to go that route then make sure you check to see if it is approved for outside use, and bond your system to the electrical panel (like he did in this video). I myself would rather use some 3/4” polyethylene plastic pipe (you could use 1/2” depending on distance), but each method has pros and cons.

I did not take the time to read everyone of the comments about your video so I'll ask you straight out how did you get away with black iron Teflon tape on a GAS manifold? NPT GAS fittings no matter what are restricted to yellow tape especially in a gas line. Have you a response to this issue?

The gas regulator isn’t set to any pressure, needs to be tested at the regulator with appliance running to check and adjust if needed, gas company is supposed to do all the work for you. It’s called a gas check , regulated rule. Technicians get specially trained for all this. Although you have done awesome work and research.

Gas manifold nice. Pipe sizing is pretty crucial for distance and btu load. Flashshield is nice in certain instances. Schedule 40 black pipe involves little skill and less cost. If the flexible gas line in your house ever received a lightning strike it would be good for one strike (at best)in the correct install/application. Then it will have pin holes...I've seen it...scary to say the least. I have a friend that parents house blew up (They were on LP). Sad deal. Please don't use flexible gas lines off your manifold. Your house is professionally build don't skimp on the mechanicals.

I’m concerned about that as well. Worse case just run it all high pressure and reduce it at the appliance but it’s easier and cheaper to do it the right way the first time.

The Artistic Boundaries Co. with gas you need volume not just pressure.

I wondered about that too, but in another comment he said it's a 2psi system, which is 5x the typical 11" of water column. In that case, the main/manifold pipe size is probably already slightly overkill, and the branch lines are probably WAY overkill.

6 gas outlets on a 3/4 inch run. Please tell me how that's going to work. 3/4 inch gas pipe natural gas will only carry 375000 BT use LP gas. 3/4 inch should carry over 500000 B TU

@@thebesthello1786 I assume you're basing those numbers on the typical 11" water column, which is 0.4psi. This is 5x the pressure, so it's going to flow much more gas through the same size pipe.
