A little comfort tip: Take the mask off from back to front. If you wear it over longer time periods, especially in summer, moisture will collect around the exhaling membrane. So if you take the mask off the way you took off that GP-5, you'll smear it all over your face. Just a sergeant's advice^^

Won’t happen. The military (at least the US Army I was in) is VERY careful and detail oriented about ordinance. Chemical weapons are treated as very serious business and nerve agents are some of the worst. If a mask was used in a nerve agent environment, it would likely be destroyed when it’s taken out of service rather than risk putting it on the surplus market.

Asbestos related cancers can take 30+ years to develop and not everyone gets them. If the filter isn't leaking you can't inhale the asbestos, however knowingly using an asbestos filter is basically playing Russian roulette with your long term health.

I noticed you mentioned polish gas mask filters and asbestos in the same sentence and immediately I got worried. I recently bought a polish gas mask from 1983 that looked extremely similar to the soviet gp5 masks. I have worn it but never attached the filter to it. The filter is tall, and shaped almost like a large alcohol flask. I don’t know what model the gas mask is and I was wondering if the filter was dangerous or not. If you could tell me if it is or not, I would appreciate it.
@Weaponsandstuff93
@Weaponsandstuff93 6 жыл бұрын
There's not been tests done on the other Polish and Czechoslovakian filters from the Cold War so personally I wouldn't trust them, personally I would recommend you use modern Polish filters such as the FP-5 that still fit on the old masks but are perfectly safe. Sounds like you have a Polish EO-14 filter, I personally wouldn't want to breath through that for extended periods.

@@Weaponsandstuff93 late a *lot*, but its a common misconception that the FP-5 filter works with the SzM-41M (which im guessing is mentioned), instead use the MS-4 filter that was made for the MC-4 mask. and also a tip: look at the diameter of the "gwint", 40 for the SzM-41M

mesothelioma is the name of the disease. Mesothelioma is a cancer that most commonly starts in the layers of tissue that cover each lung (the pleura). More rarely it starts in the layer of tissue in the abdomen that surrounds the digestive system organs (the peritoneum). bit of information taken from google for anyone that wants to know more :)

For things like volcano ash clouds or smoke from a burning house somewhere (so not chemical) is it possible to dust out an FP-5 and re use it for that same purpose, or is it dangerous to do that? So in case of ash or small dust which is not chemical you re use, but in case of a chemical fire, attack, or any other CBRN-like threat you use another, new one

No such thing as a GP-5 hose, it's simply a Soviet 40mm hose, my OM-14 hose has a rip in it but the ShMS hose works, to test it simply block the intake of the hose, if air gets in the hose has a rip in it.

Weaponsandstuff93 so using a hose on a mask with a national filter would not work.
@Weaponsandstuff93
@Weaponsandstuff93 7 жыл бұрын
What's a "national filter"? You could attach a GOST filter to a GOST hose and see if you can smell anything, but that could be a result of a filter failure, you could fill a sink with water, keep each end of the hose out of the water but put the house underwater, and see if any water gets into the hose.

It's safe without the filter but won't work, or safe and working with a modern GOST filter, but it's not safe to use the asbestos filled GP-5 filter.

*WS93*: British gas masks also had an arsenic filter Me: Didn't they already know that stuff was deadly poison ages ago?
@Weaponsandstuff93
@Weaponsandstuff93 5 жыл бұрын
The arsenic is a catalyst that removes far more deadly poisons from going through the filter.

I bought a couple of used S10s recently and they have a bad smell about them. I'm not sure if it's because of the aging rubber, the place they were stored or if it was used in a contaminated area. I've washed them with dish soap and warm/hot water and the smell is still there. Is this normal or something to worry about? Btw thanks for replies to my other questions, I really appreciate all the help.

Most rubber will have some sort of smell to it, wash them with diluted TCP liquid to get them cleaner, you can remove the plastic circle section at the front to clean the mask more efficiently.

How dangerous is talc exactly? I breathed in some when I forgot to clean out my gas mask I only wore it once with talc in it then I cleaned it out after, how likely is that talc being contaminated with asbestos?
@Weaponsandstuff93
@Weaponsandstuff93 5 жыл бұрын
Barely dangerous, baby powder contains nothing but talc and there has been barely proven dangers regarding that for decades.

I recently got a Russian mask. The seller claims it’s new and unused, however the mask is dusty and the rubber looks dull and the surface feels roughy and dusty. I have tried to clean it couple times but it looks same after it is dried out. I don’t know if it’s just the rubber material or something else. Also, the metal part of the tube connect to the mask is a bit rusty, would it be a concern?
@Weaponsandstuff93
@Weaponsandstuff93 5 жыл бұрын
Just don't use the filter that came with it and you'll be fine. When they say new they mean unissued, it's certainly not new, probably a good 30+ years old.

Weaponsandstuff93 Thanks for the advice. One more question tho, I have read that the production of GP5 ended in 1990s, does it mean that all the GP5 masks in the market right now were made back then?

@Weaponsandstuff93
@Weaponsandstuff93 7 жыл бұрын
You are using it at your own risk and they didn't use anything close to the GP-5 filter in WW2, they had hoses attached to the masks going into a canister filter. You could put a hose on a GP-5 and then have the hose hang loose in a carry satchel, that way you don't even need to use a filter.

I'm new to collecting masks and I don't know if a charcoal filter is better or if a chromium filter is better
@Weaponsandstuff93

There isn't such a thing as a chromium only filter, some charcoal filters have chromium impregnated into them, but all NBC/CBRN filters contain charcoal.
