Gas Pedal Gets Stuck on SUV Going 100 MPH

In 2018, Florida police took action to stop an SUV with a stuck gas pedal. The driver, Joseph Cooper, called 911 to report the situation, and dispatchers offered solutions. Police posted ahead of Cooper's location on I-95 and threw stop sticks in front of his black SUV.

Or put the car in neutral, take the keys out, any number of other options that the police suggested to him and he refused to try. Dude was probably too stressed to do anything except look at the road and steer though Edit: not take the keys out (which you can't do if the car isn't in neutral or park) I meant turn the engine off lmao. Foe whatever reason, he couldn't shift to neutral. Taking the keys out locks the steering, and the e-brake would have almost certainly resulted in a rollover. He wasn't going 100 mph when he was pit maneuvered, so I think he did the right thing.

He would've FLIPPED going over 100 if he'd pulled the hand brake, however the cops popped his tires first, slowing him down, before strategically pitting him to keep him safe. @@chericefoley3482as a mechanic I can tell you 1000% that you can always put the transmission in neutral without worrying about steering or anything else, this guy was trying to get a lawsuit going on the manufacturer is why he lied and said he couldn’t get it into neutral, and as far as I know from what I have worked on you don’t have to push the button to go into neutral, only down shifting or reverse requires the button and you can turn the ignition off as well without worrying about the steering wheel locking up because it only turns all the way off when in park, but i don’t recommend turning the ignition off at high speed because you will lose power steering assist, so just put it in neutral and use the brake pedal as it will still work fine there’s no need to pull the emergency brake once the transmission is in neutral

you will not lose power brakes and you wont lose power steering if you shut it off while in gear. the engine will still turn it just wont have any power once the vehicle is going slower, it will lose power steering, however the power brake booster will still have vacuum so it will still work. it has a reserve vacuum. it should last 3 hits of the brakes with the engine completely shut down. however the engine wont stop turning till the vehicle gets to around 25 to 30 mph.

With newer vehicles that dont have an actual cable ran gear selector the computer systems probably wont let the car go to neutral if its seeing accelerator and road speed inputs. Most of them with a knob or a push button selector should have a manual neutral overide for dead battery situations but that doesnt seem like it would be something that would be easy to do while trying to stay on the road and keep from hitting people.

I honestly don't know why his car wasn't able to go into neutral, did his break just not work at all?

You lose the brake booster and power steering by turning the ignition off but keep braking and as long as you don't turn the ignition all the way to the point you can remove the key, you keep steering, just not power steering. You don't need power steering when moving more than a few miles an hour. And yes, I've had to do that to a truck I drove for confirmation of the complaint and diagnosis of the problem.

You would have to pull it on pretty hard to lock the wheels up. The best options would be to put it in neutral (though he says he couldn't for some reason), or to turn the key off. ANYTHING is safer than having all of your tyres punctured and being pit manoeuvred at over 100mph. He's lucky to be alive after those stupid ideas.

When they say pull the ebrake. They don’t mean park with it. They mean feather it. It will overheat your brakes in the back but that’s the point. It’ll warp the rotors/ and it will slowly stop the car while it’s still rolling. I’m aware of the concern of locking up the rear wheels but that’s if you use the ebrake like you would normally. Just don’t do it normally. And lightly pull it. I’ve had my brakes go put before and I made it home doing that. It was fine.

I remember watching a video about a similar story one time. It was a family consisting of a mom, dad, and young boy, and they were somewhere visiting family, I think, and they were driving a rental car on a highway, and the same exact thing happened to them. This story did not have a happy ending. The car just kept speeding up and the brakes weren’t working. Everything happened to quickly, the police were able to arrive and do anything to help and the poor 911 operator had to listen to them screaming in fear, and eventually crashing and dying. Poor girl.

The sheer panic of not being able to control your vehicle, is enough to give you a heart attack! Unfortunately, I’ve been there. I was going about 80-90km approaching a bridge, in the rain when a drunk driver kept swerving in and out of my lane. He then swerved into my lane trying to hit me and I hit my breaks to slow down and move out of the way. That’s when my steering wheel locked, did a 180 spin, hit the bridge divider head on and went straight up. Thank God my car didn’t flip all the way over to oncoming traffic; as it was a busy Saturday night. I also, was lucky that there was a traffic light, not too far behind me which delayed traffic following me, by 30-40seconds. Otherwise, it could’ve been A-LOT worse.

The `emergency brake` as you in the US call it is a handbrake designed to be applied EVERY time you park although that is clearly way too complicated for the average US citizen. Pulling the handbrake would have at least slowed the vehicle down some and turn the engine off?

All these people saying don’t pull the EMERGENCY brake when you’re having an EMERGENCY in your car. The EMERGENCY brake uses a cable to apply braking force when the hydraulic (normal) brakes aren’t doing anything. It generally only applies brakes on the 2 rear wheels, and if you yank on it like it owes you money, yes you’re probably going to spin out. Kinda like slamming on your normal brakes is not something you’re supposed to do either. You apply steady pressure and hopefully it will slow you down. Seems like no one here has ever used it while driving but it doesn’t do what you think it will on your POS daily driver. It won’t make you a drift king, because your brakes aren’t new, and the cable probably hasn’t been tightened ever

If that happened assuming it wasn't a manual transmission wouldn't putting it in neutral disconnect the transmission from the motor then if you hold the brake pedal down the vehicle should come to a stop. Because no engine built can overpower working brakes. Unless his brakes failed too in which case neutral, hand brake or emergency brake because the emergency break doesn't work like a normal brake where it stops you and makes you skid it just creates a lot of drag on your rear wheels thus slowing you down. If your primary brakes failed and your emergency brake fails and the transmission won't go into neutral drop gears to 3rd 2nd and first gear which causes the transmission to limit the engine because the transmission won't let the vehicle exceed the gear speed. Assuming brakes, emergency brake, and transmission all fail (firstly you shouldn't be driving that vehicle if you know it has all those issues) secondly turn the engine off and get ready to steer hard because you'll lose power steering. After that you're just screwed if brakes, emergency brake, transmission, and engine all fail. Not sure how much applies to manual transmissions due to the engine and transmission always being connected but I would assume neutral would have a similar effect.

If he turns off the ignition he will lock up the steering wheel. Car manufacturers should put an extra button on the dashboard that will dump all the fuel out; better yet a button that will turn off the electric fuel pump .

And they didn't switch off the engine because??? The worse thing that would happen is that he'd have a harder time steering and pushing the brake pedal. This happened to me while riding with my dad. A spring broke on the carburetor.

That happened to me on a thankfully not so busy highway in my grandad’s bronco I think. I forced it into park while I veered off the road. Scary af.

Throttle gets stuck wide open. Put the gear shifter in Neutral...... This is why there needs to be a much more in depth teaching of driving that covers all types of possible failures. This is also why we have a majority of steering wheel holders instead of drivers...

Pull the handbrake. If that doesn't work we will spike your tires. It being an SUV it should safely get your wheels off the road when it rolls over.

Ive driven in my 20 years of driving at least 10 different cars and pick ups.... none werent able to be put in neutral while driving. What type of SUV was he driving?

And why can't you shift to neutral? And why cant you switch the ignition off? And why can't you pull the emergency brake? And why can't you just use the normal brake?

Ignition key has left the chat. (Off to kill the engine, back to on -but not start - to keep the steering wheel unlocked). Don't really need power assist steering while rolling, especially not a guy.

I'm sure that you're all smart people and you've probably thought about this but you could slowly push the brake or pull it and even if you hold your gas pedal down your brake pedal still works and it will engage the shifter so.

Turn the car off or put it in neutral. Dude just straight up panicked and his brain went out the window. And yes, before someone replies and says he loses power steering if he turns the car off, that shouldn't be a problem on a straight highway. And It's still better than rocketing out of control doing over 100 MPH.
