Hi Ruman. They are simply a mathematical shortcut which reaches the same result as the long calculation in your book. It relies on the fact that the cv of gas in Britain is pretty well constant. Its the same as if you had the following; 2+2+2+2=8 or you could simplify it to 4x2=8. …same result different process. I hope that helps.

good video ,,i hope you dont mind me asking but its been driving me crazy all morning have you got the john faulkner book questions and answers /question 21 on gas rates ,, its says if we wanted to determine the precise amount of gas needed in m3/hr by an appliance ,what woud your formula be if we had a 28kw net heat input gas boiler ,,they give the answer as A 28 x 1.11 x 10.76 = 334.42 ,,am i missing something or is that correct ? with the chart and my calculation i get 2.88 mr hr ,,im realy hung up on it

OK, that makes far more sense to me now. This isn’t really a question about m3/h conversions, but more a test to see if you know how to convert net to gross and with a bit of maths understanding thrown in to make up 4 answers. If you get a question like this you always break it up into its simple parts. So with this one, you have 3 BT’s of information … 1. The appliance input is in Net. 2. This net input is 28kw 3. The conversion factor from m3/h to Mw/h is 10.76. Let’s take the first, and this, i think is the point of the question..there’s no option in any of the answers to leave the input as net. So that means that you must have to convert it to Gross..as you know we do this by multiplying the kw by 1.11. So that immediately removes answers B and D We know that for every kw/h (every hour the gas is running at 1 kw) it will use 10.76 m3 of gas … that’s the conversion factor. So you now have to show whether you can understand that if 1kw/h = 10.76 m3 then 28 kw must mean 28 X 10.76. The only choices in the answers you have left are to divide the 28kw by 10.76 .. which doesn’t make sense or to multiply it, which does. So the answer is A Very often these questions are written in a way that deliberately confuses people, they’re meant to be that way. They almost “frighten” you because they. Make them look complicated. But always there is a simple question inside the complexity. Just take out the relevant information (usually the numbers) and write down what they refer to .. like i did above, and usually you’ll find the answer is quite obvious. I hope that helps, if you still don’t quite get it, let me know and ill explain it in a different way. And yes, I was wondering about your different names 😀 I’m getting old and easily confused.
