I test my two gasifying wood stove prototypes, made from soup cans. I also play with some alternative and sustainable fuels. I found Heath Putnam's channel in my research to learn more about gasification and soup can stoves. I also make some spicy Ramen.

Interesting experiment... before you convert your Walmart kettles, have you visited your scrap yard for perforated washer or solid dryer drums? They are closer to yard fire pit size and stainless steel. Great seeing your on the small screen today. Trusting that you are enjoying the waning days of summer. Wishing you and your family a blessed week, gentle weather and restful evenings. Peace brother

Thank you for the tip, JW. I will keep an eye out at my local scrap yard. That size is a bit bigger than I’d want for the camper, but would be an interesting project. Cool day here today. Thank you for watching. Peace, brother.

Tom you’ve inspired me to build a rocket stove lol and it’s big, it’s (3)55 gallon drums high and (1)sideways on the bottom welded with steel wheels for portability, it shoots 6-8 ft flames out the top, needless to say it’s HOT thanks Tom for your inspiration here from Lake Charles LA ,oh and 4 drums high produces the same flame

Rocket stoves are notoriously unkind to steel. It is best to line the inner steel drum that is exposed most directly to the hottest part of the fire with stuff like either ceramic fiber, insulated cob (with perlite vs straw), NightHawkInLite's approx. Starlite material, waterglass (least effective), or the like. This will help the steel to last much longer. Also, the more insulation you use, the better--the more efficient and clean it will burn.

Nice video. When I experimented with similar stoves I also had a problem with adding fuel causing it to bog down. I like the use of nut shells for fuel! Looking forward to your fire pit experiments as well. I'd love to get a solo stove but pretty pricey and a little bigger than I really want.

Thank you, CI. Solo stoves are nice, but they aren’t cheap. I think the pot fire pit should be a nice in between size. Plenty of light and heat, but not too much fuel consumption. Thank you for watching.

You could probably use other nut shells for fuel, as well. Like peanuts or coconuts. The peanuts have thin shells and might burn fast; but, the coconut shells are thicker and might burn more slowly. There are other nut shells you can use.

The amount of intake holes seems to be important. I think too much can be bad too. I stumbled onto a pretty good combination of cans. I took a 10 or 11 ounce soup can and a Chunky Soup can. Both have pull tops and they fit together perfectly. I put two rows of 3/8" holes (16 total) around the bottom of each can and eight 3/16" holes around the top of the inner can. I didn't put holes in the bottom, maybe I'll try that later. It burns great! Thirty to forty minutes on a load of pellets and the wind doesn't even bother it. But it took 15 minutes to boil two cups of water. Maybe it's too small? Maybe it needs to be wider with more jets on top. I don't know.🤷🏻‍♂️. I'll keep trying. I'm rounding up parts to build a Midge next.

@@GreenShortzDIY I built my Midge. It's a 22 ounce bean can inside a 55 ounce bean can with a 12 ounce chicken can on top for a gas cowling. It would burn for 40-60 minutes but it smoked when I put a pot on and it was really bothered by the wind. I read somewhere that too much primary air can cause that so I taped over one of the bottom holes on the inner can. It was better but it still smoked with the pot. I taped over another hole and tried again. This time it didn't smoke when I put the pot on and it boiled 1 cup in about 7 minutes. The wind was blowing the flame completely out of the pot stand but it never went out. I have a couple more ideas I want to try but I think I'm finally close to having a stove that I can trust to work every time.

Is this a can inside a slightly bigger can?

Yes. The gap is about 1/2 an inch between the two cans. I have heard it can be smaller. Thank you for watching.

You only want about 33 holes in the bottom of the burn chamber along with the 21 gasifying pilots at the top, and your 16 or 17 intake holes in the outer can must be slightly above center, but no more than 2" of the very bottom of the burn chamber holes. This will cause the outer hot air chamber to take precedence over any intake from the bottom of the burn chamber so that it will pull air down, but only slightly. Kinda like the water bubble in a level. You don't want to tip the scales.
