The second day of South Africa's case against Israel at the International Court of Justice at The Hague saw Israel take the stand, defending against accusations that its government is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. South Africa is demanding an emergency suspension of Israel's aerial and ground assault on Gaza in front of the United Nations' highest court. From The Hague, we hear from Diala Shamas, a senior staff attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights, the organization that sued President Biden in November, accusing him of failing to prevent genocide in Gaza. Shamas recaps the two days of hearings and discusses other avenues for holding Israel accountable. "Whether it's at the ICJ or whether it's in federal court in the United States, we're really looking to government to do everything that they can to uphold their duty to prevent an unfolding genocide," says Shamas.

I’ve noticed some people questioning why nothing has been done in the past 75 years. Firstly, those posing this question need some history lesson. Here’s a snippet: Every single time the UN attempted to pass a resolution against Israel to halt the construction of settlements in the West Bank and to prevent harm to Palestinians, the US vetoed it. The US has vetoed resolutions on Israel a total of 46 times. Now, go figure why no significant action could be taken in the past 75 years. When a bully (US) rises to the status of a superpower, this is the inevitable outcome.

Well for black peoples in South Africa many of them have land claims (the Khoi to practically all the land) and there are cyclical claims amongst numerous ethnic groups based on cycles of conquest and land possession. The precedent this sets though is interesting - SA is arguing genocide based on a 1% casualty rate (Hamas figures). In SA between 1991 and 2001, 2.2% of the Euro-ethnic Farmer population was killed (a figure greater now) ... will the SA government subsequently acknowledge that as genocide? @@dewalddewet759

The Israeli argument can easily be used against them as their genocideal occupation of over 74 years give more legitimacy under international law for Palestinians to respond to it with all legitime means including armed resistance then to Israel as an occupire who has an obligation to protect the civilians who are first second and third generations refugees of the first nakba AKA ethnic cleansing and colonialism and the own going occupation
