This episode is about my experience creating a KZbin channel. This is an important part of my boat building journey, especially since so much of my time is now impacted by KZbin as I try to document my boat restoration and boat building. It's been just over a year since I started my boat restoration channel on KZbin . How did I reach 1,000 subscribers? What have learned about KZbin? Does KZbin Wisdom work? This is what I've learned so far about KZbin. The KZbin algorithm seems to promote content it thinks you want instead of content you know you're looking for. Who is gaslighting who? Is there a secret to cracking KZbin? Am I making a KZbin Channel or am I building a boat?

Welcome to my boat building channel! This is my trawler restoration of an Albin 27 pocket trawler. Every couple of weeks I post a boat building or boat repair video to document various boat projects, sailboat restorations, or boat repairs. And when all else fails, I tell stories of boat motivation.

This channel is exactly what I would like to do. I have had over 50yrs in rebuilding boats. I have eaten up two marriages and about 37 girlfriends . I have restored boats that should never have been done --they were so far gone. I have oversatuated these boats with hours, dollars and blood--then sold them at a loss!!?? People love to buy my boats . Persevearance and patience are you best friends. Never stop learning about performing repairs with more than one method--keep your mind open--and--NEVER TURN DOWN AN OPPORTUNITY TO HELP SOMEONE!-----Mikey, Belfair, Wa

I will stick with you because you are genuine and display the all-american guy that many of us want to emulate. Smart yet teachable, never-give-up, creative, likeable with sense of humor, straight forward with little BS, honest etc... Thank you for all your effort with the boat resurrections, you I'm sure CAN imagine that there are thousands and thousands of old boats laying around collecting blackberries and moss and people / channels like this will hopefully get people from off the couch and from behind the screen out into the yard and garage and get these vessels back in the water...especially if that includes teaching son and daughter and spending time with them using tools, setting goals, etc...I'm sticking with you and the channel because a lot of good comes from it and the world needs more of that.

Your content is top notch. A lot of the fluffier channels people watch because they are either hot, clueless, and a disaster ready to happen or their dream is interesting but really unattainable without a lot of hard work. Sometimes the thing they are working on is so f-ed up the people are curious as to how the heck are they going to do it. I respect the work you do and will continue to watch because you have experience, you are not a tool, and you sound like a regular guy who knows his sh!t. No fluff just the right way to do it. I'm not a sailor or boat builder but understand the need to stay motived during the long haul project and life interruptions. Your content helps restate that. I read somewhere that old time Norwegian and Dutch sailors would call out HOLD FAST when the ship was facing difficult seas. So stay with it.

Dunno what to say man, just stay positive, stay motivated. That's what I subscribed for. We GOT TO complete our projects. Our families future vacations depends on it. And eliminate the time thieves, focus on the core mission of restoring and making videos - if Patreon takes lots of time, then ditch it. Stickers? Not necessary. Merch? joe, glad i got fed this one…more tedious to watch than your typical , but very interesting … a few observations…i am a sailor who has completed major refit on fine sailing yacht…i have watched your videos even though they can be more power boat oriented…they are packed with good, solid, succinct shipwright skills. i also believe that there are many popular channels that were designed to push certain products…they implant sophisticated advertising products within the piece at some point…i even will go so far as to say that i believe AI even produce some of these…they don’t seem to be organic in nature… i subscribed to your channel after the first one i saw , and realize that i don’t get “fed” your videos regularly as i would expect… I hope you continue to produce the content that YOU have the passion for instead of what sells…i believe it will pay off as well as possible under these strange circumstances… given your concerns, i will be sure to make more of an effort to seek you out and make comments when i believe they will be of assistance… in the meantime, follow your passion and live your dream… cheers brother!

Your channel is phenomenal. High production quality too. Your extra effort shows. If you had 100% market share for hardcore boat restoration, how many people would that be? How big is your market? For myself, I want to see you complete the boat and live your cruising dream ... after all this work.

Thank you very much. We’re on our way. Things just take a while. You pose an interesting question. But it’s not really relevant when the playing field is determined by what KZbin thinks you want to watch-not what you choose. I think the market share is a bit more than just the hardcore boat restoration crowd based off other channels numbers. Time will tell

Joe stay motivated! You might not be the most popular because your subscribers are just like you. They are restoring their boat and appreciate a channel like yours. Not interested in watching content providers turn their channels in advertising crap. Like Boat Works Today (only because you mentioned him). I know I haven’t watched Andy in a long time just because I’m tired of hearing Total Boat and Alexseal products. Lots of that going on today. They have a lot of subscribers but how many still watch their channel. Yeah your not getting a big check. I’m thinking you got in to share some good and not so good ideas. Along the way the money thing creeps in. The fastest way to disappointment is comparison. I’m working on my boat and watch you go through stuff like everyone else. Stay Motivated is the key. You want big numbers ware a bikini and play to all the unhappy people out there. Your providing a stay motivated atmosphere for your subscribers. I live up the road a ways from the Motor City and you are doing the area proud. 👍

I'm no expert at anything but I do watch a ridiculous amount of videos from sailing channels. Many of them were at the boat show. There are lots of good channels with quality content that can't seem to get high numbers even after many years doing it. I'm not sure why your video popped up. It was one about rotten portlights. I have extensively searched portlights in the past on KZbin. I liked your personality and I figured you would be an addition to Andy with Boatworks Today, who I love, so I subscribed. I haven't watched any other of your videos yet except this one. The title got my attention. I didn't watch the entire video because it was 40 min long so I skipped around. I spend so much time watching KZbin videos that I have to decide pretty quickly if I'm going to watch a video so I skim the titles and thumbnails. In general, if there's a photo of a power boat, I'm probably not going to watch. If a video is light on talking, I wait until I have time to focus on it. If there is a lot of talking, I listen when I'm in the car or multitasking. I'm a novice sailor for 5 Midwest seasons with a 1979 Pearson 323 32 foot sailboat. I'm not very handy and I have a long project list. I work full time so I only sail on weekends, an occasional weekday after a full day of work, and when I take vacation. I'll probably never cruise unless I do it in retirement. I am interested in sailboats and not power boats, how to sail videos, how to fix things on old boats, refits, cruising around the world videos, on land tours, etc. Even though I have subscribed to some, I kind of lost a bit of interest in those who upgraded from monohulls to brand new catamarans and trimarans because I can't really relate. I continue to subscribe because I've gotten attached and I care about their well-being but I really just check in from time to time to see how they are doing. I don't like scuba diving videos. To me, the fish all look the same. I like watching the realities of sailing videos but if there is too much drama, like relationship drama or if there is too much danger, I skip those videos because my brain likes to solve problems, even when I should be sleeping and don't need extra stuff to worry about. This YouTubing stuff is a lot like the arts and entertainment. I figure you can 1) do what you love and film it and the people can take it or leave it or 2) If you need to earn income from KZbin, then you need to follow the advice you were given about what works. I shared all this about myself to maybe give you an idea of who is watching these sailing channels: People who have projects, people who are learning new skills, people who can only live vicariously through others, people who are interested in your story.

Thanks so much for the info. I’m going to tell you that you are exactly one type of viewer my channel is made exactly for. I would tell you and all my audience I want to encourage you to take the time and watch all my videos because of these reasons: 1. My videos are information heavy and relatively concise for the topics. So a viewer does need to clear a space to pay attention and understand what I’m saying and what or why I’m not saying other things you might see a lot of other channels doing. 2. I used to be just like you. I was a sailboat guy who never gave much thought to powerboats. But I will tell after 30 years of messing about with boat restoration, that projects on one type, transition to projects on another. Every single trawler project could be applied to a sailboat refit. They basically are the same. They should not be ruled out. And good ideas and experience cross pollinate. This is true for many forms of vehicle restoration and even into off-grid or RV living. 3. A lot of people mistake MotorCity Boat Werks as a gig or a side hustle. Oh it’s not. It’s a life style. It might be a bit of a gag. 😁 But it is a lifelong dream. I document my boat restorations and make videos to give back information that I would want to see. That being said I think, metrics and competitiveness aside, I feel it’s perfectly reasonable to have frustration and self doubt when doing something different or against the norm. That’s part of the story. And it’s part of the journey. Only by noting the discomfort does making the achievement later that much more sweet. 😁😉 some people will get it. Thanks again and I hope you stick with me 😁👍

Most of us out here who watch you and other channels like it have worked or are working on a boat project. Some of us have done many some maybe only one. It is amazing how bad some of the boat restoration videos are. I find it humorous that some poor guy restoring an old Mako gets to video #3 and then we never see him again. Also there is a lot of misinformation out there on restoration, including wiring, fiberglass and painting. I know you owe a debt to Boatworks Today but he’s lost his way. Six years on the Bertram and probably 3 more to finish. I think his paint business is better than u tube. Anyway keep working, I am interested in seeing your boat finished and launched and on a trip. I know I’m in the minority but I’d rather see content on the trawler than a forgotten sailboat. Although you are probably right, most people see themselves sailing away on some little boat that they built instead of actually building it.

For what it's worth I watch your channel because I find you engaging. I'm more interested in your sailboat content, but, like your sidewalk painter example, I watch your "how to" content a lot because I just might learn something I can use. I'm impressed that you've got 4K subscribers in just one year! As I work on my channel I want it to be a sailing channel first but I had to get the boat "seaworthy" so I filmed a lot of the little projects. I have another channel that I used to put a canoeing trip content on as well as some how-to stuff and the how-to stuff out performs everything else by a mile. So I will put the how-to stuff out there and share it with the world just incase someone else has a similar problem and they might find my solution useful. But I doubt I'll ever see much traffic on my actual sailing content when I start making it. I still have a day job and don't have the time nor the inclination to do what it takes to become youtube famous. 😀The only reason to subscribe to me is that my output is so sporadic that you might otherwise miss an episode. It's a lot of work to film something while you're actually trying to accomplish a task, so I can appreciate what you're doing over there. Probably my favorite episode was the European cruise one, so I look forward to more "on the water" content. Keep up the good work and don't be discouraged. 👍

Well, i like your channel alot. I`ve got a Bonum255 wich is built on Albin 25. Its kind of a "luxury" Albin. Another company (forgot wich) bougt the hull from Albin and put their own spin on it. I will start a complete restauration on it in January 2024. We are 2 persons on this project. We have a really good workshop with lots of space. Its a 3-4 year project. I will shamelesly steal some ideas from you and also make it a "pocket Trawler". I really like the roof you built. My hull is in great condition, the rest not so much. For me personally i like the building content most. Since our boats are pretty similar i can find out potentional problems before i run in to them. My location and nationality is Swedish so sorry about the spelling hickups! Looking forward to stage 2 in your restauration!

Interesting. I'm new to your channel, and I have no idea why I watched this whole episode, since I'm not a creator, just a viewer. But I think you hit the nail on the head. Yes, get recommended by someone else. That is, appear on someone else's channel in some way. That's how I found some of the channels I watch regularly. Also, I hate to admit it, but I'm drawn to the fantasy spectacle. Boat building, crossing oceans, etc. What can I say? I'm middle aged and I like boats. I want to dream. KZbin captures me that way. I do get lots of recommendations from youtube on similar channels, but they all seem pretty much the same: mostly about a couple that travels on a sailboat. It's just more of the same. Seems like everyone's doing the same thing. So I don't even click on most of those. Not sure how I got here. I think it was a thumbnail about putting a pilot house on the "character boat". It looked quite nice. Then I saw your story right away: retirement project, boat restoration. That drew me in. One last thing, in one word: bikini. I quite often find myself clicking on a thumbnail with a bikini. But honestly, I don't stick around, because it annoys me that they do that. For the youtube channels I'm loyal to, they feel more like hanging out with the guys than ogling babes. I prefer good content.

It's simpler than you think. There is not a lot of decent boatbuilding videos out there and the viewership explodes at first giving you false hope. Once that pent up demand finds you, it releases a sudden burst if you will, and the number of people looking for this who have not found it is lower, thus the slower growth afterward. Many already watch another channel that was in the game earlier and they only have so much time a day. It was because Louis Sauzedde stopped making videos that I searched for a replacement and found you, although he was more for wooden boats which I like. I'm just one example. You will get more viewers for ALL your videos as you add more new videos.

Joe….Greetings from a fellow Detroiter. I’m curious if when you were doing your research you came across anything from/about KZbin altering their algorithm to account for the dramatic increase in the use of smart TV(s)? I watch almost exclusively on my smart TV. Seeing the content over a 55” inch screen as compared to a 15” screen is a no brainer. Unfortunately it makes it difficult to leave comments, which all of the content creators say is important to the growth of their channels. I think if anything, the trend away from watching on a computer screen, or phone, is going to continue and the amount of comments is going to go down across the platform accordingly.
@motorcityboatwerks
@motorcityboatwerks 7 ай бұрын
Welcome Aboard! Yes comments affecting ranking is a form of KZbin Wisdom. I know the majority of KZbin viewing is actually by mobile device not large TV. 🐙 sadly YiuTube promotes channels based on their interpretation of what they think you want to see. Thanks for the comment. Be sure to subscribe and speed the word in social media 😁

Thanks so much Tom. I must admit that I have considered the shocking and possibly repulsive 🤢 option of posing in a bikini for a thumbnail. But if I broke the internet -what then ??😂

I've been a subscriber since Andy gave you a shout out. This is just my opinion, for what its worth. Here's what frustrates me about your channel: I am assuming this is a boat building channel. Why aren't you building your boat? I want to hear your thought process in real time, not just what you decided to do. I also don't understand where you are in the build process of your boat. Do you? Where is your project list, your time line and what's your budget? If I wanted a polished, scripted channel, I'd watch Sailing Uma. I feel like you're spending too much time talking to the camera. Let me see your boat and what your up against. Check out Mustie1, Travels with Geordie, and Nomad Boatworks for channels that bring the watcher into the project. I don't think Mustie1 does much more than point the camera at the project and talks as he works. He has a Zillion followers. Keep your videos short and keep them real. I don't care much about sound or video quality. I hope this helps. Tough love and all that. Your Marine Video was awesome.

Thanks for the feedback Jeff. You know what they say happens when you “assume”. My channel is not reality TV. My channel is about benchmark videos that show a project to the Moment of Completion. It’s about the nuances of amateur boat building and restoration. I make videos that I would want to see as a competent amateur with some skins on the wall. 😎 I don’t do what the others all do because frankly it’s not original and it’s usually awfully boring. Your complaint is unjust and inaccurate. I’ve done two videos explaining exactly where I am in the building process. Virtually every episode you see the BIG LIST behind me. I remind viewers we’re completing Phase One about to enter Phase Two. Perhaps your real complaint is we’re not moving fast enough. In this video I explain it’s my frustration too. 👍 We will do budget videos and planning videos at the appropriate moment. But it will be logical. Your overall complaint is a common one I hear because I think many people expect my show to be meandering reality TV, artisanal wood shavings, fly on the wall nonsense, or a clueless amateur hot mess. They wish I’d follow the format of all the other “boat restoration channels”. But what I’ve shown is that to those in-the-know, that’s NOT real boat building. Real boat building is a slog. Hard work. A grind. Its money. It’s detailed planning and execution that no one can or does dare to talk about. We all know how to cut a board or grind fiberglass. We know what it looks like to unload a car or move materials time lapse. Or a cat supervising a boat project. 🤢 But do you know what a Toe Rail Limber Hole is or why you need it? Do you know PVC foam board can be made into boat furniture? Or the reality behind epoxy bilge paint, rubbing strakes, or teak repair? Real Boat building is self doubt and ambition competing for time and energy. It is a long and complicated journey. It’s takes some maturity. Some people get that. I appreciate your feedback and I thank you for your support. I’m passionate and will convert you yet. Really sit down and watch the Albin 27 Playlist to understand what I’m doing. Stick with me. All your questions will answered in due time. If you email me an address I will send you an autographed copy of my book. Thanks again 😁

I will encourage you to rewatch your own videos. They strike me as a little light on the boat building. The big board is in your shop, but we don't see it much. Bring the viewers into your project and they will subscribe. But please, do it your way. Your best videos, IMO, were the PVC foam board construction projects because they had actual build content. I agree with what you are saying in your reply. I just don't think your videos are doing what you are intending. I have remained subscribed because I'm expecting your content to improve. This video proves that you want to work on it, I think. Just a thought. @@motorcityboatwerks

Thanks Jeff 😂😅🤣. I think your complaint is my boat building channel doesn’t match what you think or have been told a boat building channel should look like. Your reply made my point and confirms my channel is exactly what I said it was. Too bad you don’t like it. 😎I feel confident there are people perhaps like you who may not like every video. I’m ok with that. 😉

I wrote a very long and detailed comment, but deleted it. At the end of the day, you aren't a visual story teller. It's that simple. There are less technical channels that drive me crazy, but engage me because they aren't in a well lit warehouse with a guy talking to a camera. It's that simple. KZbin is a visual medium. It's not magic. People like good story telling over technical content. I can search fiberglass work or topside painting.....but a channel that has that AND grabs me with camera, lighting, story, music, suspense, a little drama........ An example? I have never thought about your channel after watching it. But, that idiot that bought that crappy catamaran and has zero idea what he's doing over on Wilding Sailing? Or the "in over our heads" couple that bought the Swiss cheese boat Flying Coney? My wife knows when I watch them because I'm shouting at the laptop or muttering at the dinner table. We actively discuss them. There is no conspiracy. It's about engaging entertainment. You're clearly not a film maker or a photographer, you're not coming to this as a creative. and it shows.

You are hysterical 😭 and misinformed. You simultaneously made my point for me while ignoring most of what I said. As I proved in this video using the KZbin analytics it has nothing to do with content or creativity. Please watch the episode again. 😂🤣😂

How many quality TV shows get cancelled? I've noticed almost every successful KZbin channel has an attractive woman either hosting the channel or prominently featured on the channel. Reality ... it's not you.

@@motorcityboatwerks not you, what I meant to say was I see young couples making money on KZbin building boats, spending $$$ on boats. Are you making enough money off KZbin to buy a box of screws once in a while???

Not really. That’s a pretty low standard -buying a box of screws

Stop doing "shorts" because for a sailboat restoration channel there is no value added. KZbin is just trying to stop viewers going to TikToc - the majority of shorts are a waste of time, a distraction. Thanks.

I stopped doing shorts about 7 months ago. And if I do a short, it’s just re-edited footage of a long form episode. I explained this many many months ago 🤓
