What a fantastic experience I just had. I do not speak any French, I was only able to pick up on the odd word or so. For the first minute I watched with auto-translated subtitles but it was just distracting me so I turned them off. I then sat staring into his/her eyes for the whole thing without looking away or at any other part of the screen. I genuinely felt like I was going into a transe and throughout I was experiencing visual hallucinations - I was convinced at certain moments their faces were being distorted as they just looked like they were made of spirals. I'm glad Gaspar was willing to experiment with something like this, direct hypnosis on film. I'd definately say that he's put these techniques into more indirect use in his feature films, but here they are fully exposed and are able to distort your reality if you're open to it.
