Gaspar Yanga: The Mexican Slave Resistance Leader

Born in 1545, Yanga was a man from Gabon in Africa, who was captured and sold into slavery in Mexico. He went on to escape and create a settlement for free black people in Veracruz, Mexico. Despite multiple attempts by the Spanish authorities to attack and overthrow the settlement, Gaspar Yanga and his community prevailed, and were granted their autonomy.
