Gaston Wasn’t a Bad Guy: A Mini Video Essay

What if the bad guy wasn't the bad guy? This is a mini video essay about how Gaston wasn’t a bad guy. Kind of, specifically how the mob was right and morally justified in Beauty of the Beast. (And a shoutout to John Doyle and NeoGastonism for making this topic and video popular) The morality of mobs is hard to pin down, but after taking a closer look with me, I think you might agree with that conclusion if you consider the villagers point of view and circumstances. The snowflake doesn’t blame itself for the avalanche, and mobs are destructive, so how responsible are the members of the mob for all that went down? I tackle some tough question, and hopefully give you some good food for thought.
If you enjoyed this video, here is a video about self defense and provocation: • A Lesson on Morality: ...

That's an incredible and entirely compelling point--the issue of capturing children. In France at this time period in many other nearby countries the stories of child abduction by beasts, spell casters, witches, etc., were very common, and we have Gaston reacting immediately with "the beast will make off with your children," because Bell WAS one such child that Maurice had already testified was "captured and locked in a dungeon!!" Wow. Gaston just wanted to protect the villagers from possible invasion from a nearby castle owner and magical beast that had already taken prisoners!!

Right? It's funny to watch the movie since this realization, because they have to go out of their way to make Gaston a jerk, otherwise he is and would be a rational hero (just a misinformed one).
@CerReel
@CerReel 2 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree with the idea that Gaston wanted to save the villagers. It's been implied throughout the movie that he was so self centered and narcissistic and believed he was entitled to anything and anyone. That includes Belle. So what I saw was he was taking advantage of the situation to make himself look the hero as well as having an undeniable excuse to force Belle into marriage. It's the mob that had good intentions. Their actions were viciously executed, but with good and understandable intentions. Gaston was only in for it for his selfish needs, not for the sake of the villagers.
@Jonathan-A.C.

@@CerReel Basically this. Gaston is the bad guy, but he’s not evil all throughout. Many of the actions of the village and general antagonists are justified, albeit it not perfect. Jealousy was still a big part of Gaston's motivations. The girl who would rebuff him at every turn speaking of anyone with warmth and affection, that it was a freakish monster probably wounded his pride as well. Been a while since I last saw the movie, but it does seem odd Gaston was singularly focused on Belle only to not look into where she went after she disappeared. Does seem to be a glaring plot hole how everyone forgot they had a prince and castle within walking distance.

Technically not a murderer. Whether or not it's wrong to let someone die depends on your own likely hood of following them in death, knowledge of their coming death, and whether or not they're likely to hurt someone after you save them. Though, saving someone's life regardless of any of that is doubtlessly noble. I would say that in this case, Belle wouldn't have known if Gaston would have continued to attack the Beast, and she was focusing on the Beast so she perhaps barely knew what was happening to Gaston anyways. Also, of course, he seemed to be out of reach. Murderer? No. Manslaughter because of she could have saved him but didn't? *Very* arguable.

one should not forget that the movie spoonfeeds "gaston=evil" and it has to do this because had they made him and the villagers act more true to life and less like stereotypical movie bullies/ baddies the audience, which are impressionable children might have actually sided with Gaston and the villagers, because Gaston and the villagers act by common sense, keep the outcome of each Gaston scene but substitute the interaction for each of them to one with a good guy vibe and you as the audience are left rooting for Gaston, who protects his community, who shows he is monogamous despite being desired by every woman besides Bell meanwhile Bell does not actually do anything of vallue to the community, she reads storybooks all day which in the 18th and 19th centuries was seen as no better or even worse than watching tv all the time is today. the beast had been a man but indeed the villagers could not have known that and regardless had only projected beastly behaviour to the outside world, in fact he imprisons Belle in his castle to force her to fall in love with him, Gaston was agressive in his pursuit of her but he never thought of resorting to such despicable methods, In the end it seems that disney wanted to go against societal conventions and the only way that could work was to present those conventions and those living by them/enforcing them as terrible people, whilst showing the alternative as something romantic, again she was locked in a dungeon to save her father and the beast did so only to get her to fall in love with him and break the curse, the equivalent to some guy in his thirties adopting a 16 year old girl and grooming her to fall in love with him

Excellent post! I think back then, the Gaston of a village would be more like a dumb lunk headed guy but who wanted to protect his village and was respectful to his elders. But then a conflict could still happen because of information asymmetry. However most movies aren’t really into more nuanced takes, they want clear good guys and bad guys. So a situation where everyone is well meaning, and acting rationally based upon totally different sets of information, which puts them in conflict, isn’t really what Hollywood would do.

So true. But Disney loves to force the audiences perspective and view the antagonist as villainous and never redeemable. Tho in recent years, Disney has tried a new approach.. kinda. With a new film centered around a classic Disney antagonist.. but I find it strange that of all the Disney antagonists they chose to give the viewer a change of perspective, Disney chose Cruella, a wicked woman who wants to skin dogs for fashion. That's pretty much it. There are so many other antagonists that they could've chosen, yet they chose her?? But I guess you could easily assume that Disney wanted to profit off the hype around Harley Quinn with her new movies and created their own version of her.

He for one is consistently being egregiously rude to the point of harassing and assaulting others, constantly demeans and looks down on everyone around him, disregards his genuine faults by reminding himself of the superficially good traits he has, he is attempting to force a woman to marry him without her consent because he believes he deserves her, plans to kidnap her and her father as well as threaten them to do these things, and is actively planning to kill someone belle loves BECAUSE he sees that she loves him and not Gaston himself. Besides those acts, the more poignant focus of the story is on the heart of the person, and Gaston is proven constantly to have horrible character and to be a morally twisted person who doesn't value others, which is the essential main problem beyond even any actions he's taken. I don't think calling him evil is productive or fair to how the story was portraying him, but he's certainly monstrous and a pretty bad person. The beast's biggest blunders are imprisoning belle's dad, whom he believed was trespassing as well as perceived to be demeaning him, keeping belle imprisoned, and at the most being aggressive, forceful, and angry. But the beast's motivations were constantly shown to be much more moral and considerate. He imprisons belle's dad because, again, he was intruding and the beast believed him to be demeaning or insulting him, in which the beast imprisoned him, which was beyond harsh and cruel, but clearly motivated by a sense of threat as well as a decision made on an angry whim without intention or forethought. Then when the beast imprisons belle it goes without saying why that's at least understandable. Another thing to point out though is that he takes it to heart that belle will sacrifice herself for her father as well as is deeply remorseful for her losing touch with her father. These both display that the beast not only cares for both of them meaningfully but also regrets slightly his actions, which are, again much much more reasonable and motivated from a place of good than Gaston. And then for how he treats belle, he gets angry often and acts aggressively but doesn't follow through on threats at all and actively submits himself and accomodates her wishes, while also reflecting and feeling remorseful for his behavior. He doesn't actively invade her space, he listens to the advice of others and he makes compromises to some degree. I mean I understand and can agree with the sentiment being expressed that people can easily distort the view of someone who's the complete opposite of what they're being espoused to be, but that's also essentially what the story is about. Gaston is shown to actually have a terrible personality and on the level that is meaningful and focused on in this story, be a horrible person, while the beast who is expected to be a monster, actually is proven to be an amazing person by the end despite his dire circumstances.

I think Bob Lennon articulated those arguments very elegantly. The village may not be too fond of books and knowledge but also they don't have the luxury to appreciate it due to the constant struggle of living in a modest community. Gaston is the best hunter of the village and most likely fed the village more than any royalty in this story did. It's only natural they won't make a sequel on the events following the end of the movie. Gaston freaking died and so did the village's capacity to sustain the next winter properly. Kinda messed up if you think about it.

I feel like with was more of a defence for the villagers' actions than Gaston's. Like, Gaston isn't the sharpest tool in the box, but he's also incredibly manipulative and knows how to work a crowd. He's the town hero after all, and he liked that status. I think the idea is that he saw the Beast as competition than a threat, but used the town's paranoia and superstition to rally them up. Also, he doesn't exactly respect Belle or her father, and I feel like he'd only rescue Belle if Belle herself would be his "reward" afterward. I get a lot of people love Gaston, and how could you not. He's a hilarious and charismatic villain, but he's still a villain. So yeah.....sorry, I'm not buying this argument, but I'm ready to be persuaded otherwise. Nice video though.
@OntheOtherHandVideos
@OntheOtherHandVideos 2 жыл бұрын
Ya, I was mostly thinking about and talk about the mob itself in the video for this reason. I think the writers went out of their way to paint Gaston as a mustache twirling bad guy because if they didn't, he could have been another protagonist and there would be no villain. And thought this could have been a better film, it was also an unnecessary risk, because the traditional story structure hit it out of the park, especially at that time. But yes, how he is presented, he definitely isn't a great guy.
@tsnophaljakarax9963
@tsnophaljakarax9963 2 жыл бұрын
@@OntheOtherHandVideos I can see your point, but honestly I think sometimes a straight-up bad guy isn't really all that bad for a story. I mean hell, humans can be complex but can just also be straight-up jerks. And in a way, that's how I see Gaston. I don't see him as a moustache-twirling evildoer. I think he does actually see himself as the hero, as does the rest of the town. I mean even Belle is reasonably friendly with him. She just has her limits when he starts being a dick XD I think his "evil" acts begin to spiral out of control when he doesn't get his own way. And that makes sense. Everyone in the town worships him, so to have not just some girl turn him down, but the one he's had his heart set on, that's gonna come as a massive shock to his ego. So then he basically starts using everything in his power to get what he wants, thus making him more villainous. So basically my point is that Gaston doesn't really start out evil. He's just an egotistical jerk that makes worse and worse decisions that doesn't really benefit anyone but himself, thus becoming the movie's villain. It might have been neat to see a more 'morally-complex' Gaston, but I think him being a jerk kinda serves the message of the movie better. He may be everyone's favourite Alpha-male.....but he's still a massive asshole and there's no changing that. ADDENDUM: Be that as it may though, I think Disney themselves realised how much of a chad Gaston was, and somewhat redeemed him in a live-action Beauty and the Beast spinoff show on the Disney Channel. I can't remember of the name of the show, but I know that both Belle and Gaston were the hosts. I did remember as a kid thinking it was pretty jarring to see Gaston as a good guy in the show and actually being nice to Belle. So maybe Gaston just holds some kind of power I will never fully understand XD

Something tells me the reason why they made beauty and the beast as a feminist leaning story is because many criticized the little mermaid's movie which is the Disney princess film before the beauty and the beast came out. They wanted Belle to be a more idealistic feminist woman that little kids should look up to instead of Ariel. Ariel was only seen as a spoiled brat who wanted to have man as seen by many critics including feminists and SJW's. It seems that the wokes did not like Ariel's portrayal of the bitter reality and her personality as a rebellious teen girl making mistakes rooted from parent-child issues because of the 'girls are supposed to be smart all time and looking for a man to be happy is dumb' ideology. They made an even more based storyline in the beauty and the beast, giving unrealistic messages and misinterpretation of what being a man should be, AKA being a simp. Seeing Belle portrayed as the 'imperfectly-perfect' special misunderstood character is just honestly not applicable in real life.

The Mob Song is terribly underrated. Both of Gaston's songs are great, tbh. As to the justification of the mob, they have honestly done all of the due diligence required. They have the testimony of Maurice, who they reasonably believed to be hallucinating as he was a known nut. Belle has now shown them the beast, and Maurice, her father says it's a monster. The conflicting testimony of the father and daughter can't be rectified without talking to the beast, and (1) that's pretty unreasonable to expect the town to do (2) What is the beast going to say if he has indeed cast a spell on her? He will deny it, and they reasonably expect this, so they make the decision to kill the beast.

Beauty and the Beast takes place in the early 1700s, way before the actual French Revolution. It'd be like conflating WW2 with the modern day. That and the French Revolution primarily was a Parisian/urban affair. It was less villagers forming a mob, and more urban townsfolk forming said mob. As for the video itself, it is obvious that Gaston himself had ulterior motives. The villagers definitely had good intentions, but Gaston clearly was trying to manipulate the situation in order to get it on with Belle.

Gaston's a funny character, especially with people throwing around new terms. People call it toxic masculinity, when all the dude does is make motions to not have an old man that keeps getting himself into potentially lethal situations to be left in the care of a neglecting daughter incapable of caring for her father and trying to kill a lycanthrope with a habit of kidnapping members of his community. Meanwhile Belle wants to bone her kidnapper and oppressor and thinks it's all ok because she says so and nothing but her own desires matter. Is this toxic feminity? Where, if you look at things just as lacking in nuances at Belles behavior, you can see an evil selfish person, with no concern for right and wrong only in it for themselves? Or is it just an instance of people making really stupid takes with no nuance and thought behind them?

No. Even in that context, forming a mob to attack the Beast at his castle still wasn't morally justified. There was no evidence that the Beast had harmed anyone, and the only person who had spent any length of time with him was able to vouch for his character. If the Beast had previously attacked and injured someone else, then it would have been a tough call. The mob went along with Gaston, knowing full well that he didn't know any more about the Beast than they did. It was disgusting, unjustified hysteria.

Hysteria? Definitely. But I'd argue that it was justified (as I did in the movie). For the education and superstition level at that time, I think it would be very possible a jury of their peers would find them justified in their actions.

I actually don't agree. Regardless of whether beast was "good on the inside" or not he still would have needed to be brought to justice for 2 counts of kidnapping. Something he would have never complied with. Given that these societies often had no police the mob had a legitimate social function (bring people into court). So I think that though the animus might have been different (goal to subdue over kill) the end results would be similar.
