the soldiers who survived the gas were on most likely limited time before they succumbed to their wounds from it so with their last bits of energy and fight they got up and fought on even if it meant death from their wounds they put the fear into the enemy soldiers causing them to mass retreat. may the men at the fort who died may they rest in peace and their souls be in a better less troubled place

yep, they died later but they managed to survive a but more because they used wet clothes as a weak filter, its the same thing that they tell you to do when there is a fire near and a lot of smoke because the wet cloth helps you a bit with the smoke or in this case the gas
