The Attack of the Dead Men, or the Battle of Osowiec Fortress, was a battle of World War I that took place at Osowiec Fortress (now northeastern Poland), on August 6, 1915. The incident got its name from the bloodied, zombie-like appearance of the Russian combatants after they were bombarded with a mixture of poison gases, chlorine and bromine by the Germans. While coughing up blood, the Russians covered their faces with cloths and managed to rout German forces.

i have heard they were so messed up by the gases that they could not feel anymore pain so they kept advancing even after getting shot (exept of instant kill hits like head, heart and lungs) what striked even more fear in the german army. is that true?

Also, Sabaton actually has a History channel where they have teamed up with an American Historian and go in depth into the stories that the songs are about, so if you find a song that peaks your interest and want to learn more - see if the channel Sabaton History has an episode about the song. It features parts of the music though, so I wouldn't recommend doing it with a song you plan on doing a blind reaction to.

Yes. The best bet is for these older videos, see if there's a matching Sabaton History video. My knowledge of the two World Wars and a lot of historic battles and individuals that never get taught in the US school system. And even better, the catchy lyrics stick dates in your head that will remain with you should you ever need to know that the sack of Rome occurred in 1527 or that "Death from Above" is the motto of the 82nd Airborne.

Sabaton definitely is an amazing band all of their music is about history. Definitely check out No bullets fly, Night Witches but make sure they are the animated story telling video they are amazing, Ein Livstid I Krig live but make sure the subtitles are in English cause they are singing in Swedish, Lady of the Dark story telling video and First Soldier story telling video are great and Soldier of Heaven are great. All their songs are amazing definitely welcome down the Sabaton rabbit hole.

"Last Stand" from Sabaton is certainly a read. You'll get a brief history lesson from the song, only to read about it of just how extensive the HRE's actions were that day to present day. ;) One act changed Europe overnight.

This is by far my favorite band of all time. Simple because it's all about war and history. Its about the Harlem Hellfighters who were African American soldiers during ww1, whi despite being discriminated harshly still were one of the most fearsome and effective troops of the great war.

i just commented suggesting Father, since it's literally the origins of this song, but that's also an incredible suggestion. i honestly am trying to learn how to sing to the song, but due to it's key/pitch i have to remain much lower than him and in some parts i have to go LOW, which is hard for me to do. i can do it, but it's REALLY hard a lot of the time. it also sounds off to me. honestly i've thought about uploading an attempt to get a more rounded opinion, good cover or not. can't improve without criticism and critique after all.

I think enough people have said about the story of the attack of the dead men so I won't explain any more 😂 If you want to react to more I recommend "1916" or "A Lifetime of War" these are a couple of my favourite songs by Sabaton (also Attack of the Dead Men is one of my favourites too because I love the story behind it) but 1916 and A Lifetime of War made me cry so bad when I heard them both though. Especially A lifetime of War because that song really hits hard with the modern wars going on. "religion and greed cause millions to bleed" is one of the lines in a lifetime of war and it still reigns true to this day. It's some of their slower songs but they are still so powerful and really make you think what it was like and still is like to be a soldier. My grandad was a member of the British Royal Army so all this stuff really hits home for me when I think of his stories and the things he had to go through.

Iron Maiden wrote 'The Trooper' about the British Ligh Brigade in the Crimean war, and 'Alexander the Great' about the Macedonian conqueror... 'Paschendale' about World War I... etc. Manowar is an American band that made their whole career about medieval, fantasy and swords & sorcery battles... one of their songs 'Spirit Horse of the Cherokee' was inspired by a real event... Sabaton is a band that had made a 25 year career (so far) basing their lyrics entirely on historical battles and wars... and from all over the world. They even covered a Manowar song - 'Kingdom come' 🤘🔥

So funny you should stay that at 5:00. Before 2016 I didn't listen to Sabaton didn't know they were a thing. GF actually listened to them without really knowing the history behind their songs. It was playing in the background one day we were hanging out and I started catching some of the lyrics for Price of a Mile, then Gallipoli, then Ghost Division, as I paid more and more attention to each new track I was explaining the battles behind each of them to her. That's when I found out all of their songs were like that. Been a fan ever since.

They have a about 5 or 10 songs that has nothing to do with history from back when they were first starting, and a couple that are covers of other bands songs but the majority of their catalog is Historical. People tend to forget those existed or even know those existed as since the album, Primo Victoria which came out in 2005, Sabaton had done almost nothing but songs about history.

One of them is Metal Machine, which I first thought was about tanks or warships, as I was only familiar with their historical warfare rock songs. It's not - it's actually chock-full of references to songs and albums of other heavy metal bands such as Dio, Iron Maiden, KISS, Ozzy Osbourne. It was a pivotal polish fort guarding the primary railway for the area. They had attacked it many times and failed to take the fort. On this occasion they attacked and faced poison gas from the infamous Dr Death. They needed this fort to secure the area and disrupt the supply lines. Men thought to have died in the trenches to the gas had bought time by wrapping soaked masks, rose up and attacked the German position. The germans were terrified because they appeared as "Dead Men". Check out their historical page to go along with the songs. The effects of chlorine gas on skin and more about the battle. Sabaton has also received official recognition for Historical accuracy by the Swedish Historical Society. I have followed this band since finding them on Yahoo music. They started with a mix of songs that were not historical necessarily but completely devoted to history by their first official album. ALL of their music is fantastic and if you ever get a chance to see them live... GO. I cant say this enough... SUPPORT THIS BAND.

World War I was one of the bloodiest wars of all time; and vastly outdone by World War II. Sabaton did a cover of a Mötorhead song called “1916”. Sabaton’s cover and music video are dedicated to all soldiers who are sent out to fight, but the song g is specifically about the Battle of Passchendael, where a combined 1 million soldiers were slaughtered all for six miles of territory. Many of those soldiers were 16 years old boys, one falling every 4.4 seconds, clutching his wounds and crying for his mother as he died. The music video legitimately made me weep.

WWI the Russians sent so many soldiers at the German lines wave after wave that the Germans started to believe they were reanimating and continuing to charge even though they saw them fall to the mustard and chlorine gas.

Well, not necessarily. The reason they thought they were reanimating was because they thought the Russians were dead after the poison gas. They were coughing up bits of their organs and blood because of the gas, but alive. There weren’t new soldiers coming in, they were gassed soldiers that had lived by wrapping a cloth around their faces (and likely adrenaline). The Germans were so shocked by this that they retreated. They believed that they were reanimated corpses since they looked like corpses as the gas would’ve been dissolving their insides and possibly their outsides.

also bonus fact as someone who has worked in the school system sabaton is also a good way to introduce Teens to historical things that they then can go more into if it is something for them. had a teenager who got really big into the "Lauri Törni" (the song soldier of 3 armies) a guy who hated the Russians so much he join every army fighting them

YES, more Sabaton, please! It's never too many ;) Great reaction! Thanks! I've been to the Osowiec Fortress this summer. Today it is Poland but it belonged to Russia that time. In 1918 after the ww1 we regained the independance after 123 years of partitions by Russia, Prussia and Austria. The guide there has mentioned the song and the Sabaton band visiting the place. She let us to hold the original empty "bottle" for gas which was used then. It's big. There is Wizna 40 km away with the grave of Kpt Raginis. The Sabaton's banger 40:1 is about Wizna and it's Nr 1 in their History Channel. Sabaton's got thousands of fans in Poland. (see concert in PL in 2012 700000). There are more songs about the Polish history whih are bangers and e.g. check the memes: Then the winged hussars arrived... ;) My recommendation would be all songs but to be specific: 1. Uprising (the song which made me the Sabaton's fan) about the Polish Warsaw Uprising 1944; 2. 40:1 - about the Polish resistence in Sept 1939, Woodstock live, 2012 recommended; 3. Fields of Verdun (vid made in Poland in Gerhard Fort) official music vid recommended; 4. Metal Machine - NOT about the history ;)

Reason why I like the band is because I listen to music plus I get a history lesson at the same time which is a double bonus which is pretty damn awesome and I suggest you listen to another song from them called no bullets fly which is actually based on a true story and watch it towards the end of the video because the daughter of one of the pilots actually is on the video is thinking sabaton for doing a video on that story

Christmas truce!! It’s awesome and heartbreaking and good music. I’ve learned so much more interesting history from these guys than any history lesson.
