Esprit de Corps: "If an assault were launched on this building right now - if the windows came crashing down and the whole world descended upon you - this man would hurl himself in death's way to save you. He is your half-brother." What a way to introduce a character, especially with this playing in the background. It made me take a liking to Kim instantly. After that rough wake-up, at least *someone* got your back.

@@madikken5363 It's really interesting because on paper he doesn't sound like a popular character. He's stoic, has some character sure, but nothing crazy or super-cool on the surface. He's a straight man. But everyone who played the game loves him! Easily the most popular behind (maybe) the protagonist.

@@fpedrosa2076 True! I think we all love him because he´s like an anchor to the chaotic mess of a main character that is Harry. While playing I found it a great relief to be accompanied by someone who will always have my back, no matter how badly I fuck up. Maybe having someone as reliable and loyal by our side is something that speaks to us on a very personal level? Also, since he has such a serious personality, it is all the more satisfying when he does indulge in Harry´s shenanigans now and then :) The writers just did an overall fantastic job with him imo

ELECTROCHEMISTRY [Trivial: Success] - Trying to sleep? But that's boring. You can do that when you're dead, or in tomorrow's lecture. Lectures are a great time for that, the *best* time, so drop the "just one more song" act. Put your phone aside, boot the computer back up and play some more! That's the life, my man, the gaming life! YOU - NO! I'm tired and trying to stay up to date with my studies. You kept me up too long already, so let me get at least four and a half hours of sleep, for crying out loud! Good luck with your dopamine receptors, y'all. Better luck than me, anyway.

VOLITION [Moderate:Success] - It's nothing you haven't dealt with before. Temptation has called every day of your life, and no matter how far along you wish you were, you're still better now than if you'd given in. This time's no different. REPTILIAN BRAIN - Embrace the darkness, true respite from what you want to be distracted from. It's warm down there in that bed, good enough to never get up...

Shivers: As the music plays a distant flightless bird pecks aimlessly at the ground; the wind whips up an old, spoiled food wrapper and sends it spiralling to the ground. The glow of an abandoned lighthouse pierces the autumn air and an elderly man watches from a bench he visits each day to remember his wife. As it plays, it’s as if it will never end.

It is the songification of electrochemistry/addiction: like sex, alcohol and drugs, at first, the euphoria, then comes melancholy, then you might realize something is wrong but will be unable to give it up. I've been in college for nearly 6 years, getting a 4 year degree. I've watched a lot of friends graduate and move on without me, and I've commuted every year so far, leaving my experience hallow for the most part. Just for one month during this summer I'm finally living on campus, an experience I never thought I'd get considering I'm a super-senior now. But the campus is sad and empty, leaving me unsure If it's even worth it. I'm sitting in a nearly empty warehouse sized chow hall, almost by myself there are so few people. It feels so lonely and a place out of time, but I listen to this song while eating breakfast in this largely empty cafeteria, and I feel a bit more comfortable while I wait for my life to finally get under way... join my friends on the other side of adult hood I guess... A lot how I imagine Harry feels waking up trying to muster the canter to find himself, and a killer, if you wanted to get philosophical about it...

Just trying to keep the ball rolling. This game legit taught me how to process a lot of different responses Id have to things. There's a lot of strangely therapeutic elements to disco elysium. Going so deep down a self defeating rabbit hole in this game will straight up end it. So you learn to keep yourself going and finding reasons to keep going. And I suppose that's life. In a good way.

@@hossbonaventure Im right there with you, and I think the most important and moving thing about it is that: even when you do crazy or self destructive stuff, there are characters who still care about you/Harry. In particular Kim, and to a lesser degree even Jean. Most other stories would paint Harry as a completely unredeemable person, but even when you do some stupid stuff (up to the point that Harry is just down right malicious/racist), characters understand how the circumstances of the world pushed you in this direction and are patient with you. Some even doing every thing in their limited power to help steer you towards good decisions. It just makes me feel less alone knowing that you can mess up and feel lost but that people can and will still care about you, even if they literally don't know you at all. Just because we're all human and we're more empathetic than most are lead to believe. That's what felt therapeutic to me.

Just finished my first play through today, never has any game affected me the way Disco Elysium did, fantastic writing, great and believable characters, good voice acting, main character I might relate to a bit too much, one of the most interesting game worlds I've ever had the pleasure to explore and learn about, no forced shooty shooty bang bang fighting to keep players engaged but insightful, deep and meaningful conversations with people, truly touching moments, brilliant soundtrack and you can play the whole game with only a mouse. Truly a 10/10 masterpiece of interactive story telling. The world is a beautiful place, the people shine with inspiration and passion within them. Don't believe it all, don't believe that ever swirling, ever consuming void. That comfortable black pit where you can convince yourself that the world has abandoned you- that nothing can ever get better. It may not now. It may not by the time you're on your death bed. But its those moments where the sun and wind rises, that you feel the cool vastness of the world on your bare cheek and you think "Yes, in this already passed moment- things are good." Be kind if nothing else. To yourself, to others, to those underserving. Disco into that tequila sunset.

Quick info: Almost the entire ost was made by Sea Power. The game's songs are all featured on their various albums, usually with vocals. I'm unsure what relationship the band has to the game's dev team. This theme seems to be based on "A Light Above Descending" on the album Sea of Brass (2015), but finds its most faithful analog in "Fire Escape in the Sea" on Everything Was Forever (2022). The fluidity of the melodies and themes are incredibly compelling across their discography.

I know that the Whirling-in-Rags was named after a lyric from an older Sea Power song in the original tabletop RPG sessions that Disco Elysium was based on. "You're whirling in rags You're vast and you're sad Hail holy queen of the sea" So obviously having been fans for a while, the creators went straight to Sea Power to ask if they could do the soundtrack and by god did they do a phenomenal job

Ok, so its 4:31 here in Poland and I cant fall asleep and Im quite drunk so I might as well write my experience from this game for the 3 people that will read it. First of all, Disco Elysium helped me understand things that I couldnt cope with, that is break up and running away from your problems, like alcoholism. Its definetely a game like no other, but what made me feel like this game was made especially for me, was probably 4th night, I cant really remember as I finished this game quite long ago. Namely, I played on hard, and made a promise to myself that I wont sell any "souvenirs", I mean items like postcards, forgive me but I cant really recall what they were called. So there goes 1st, 2nd, 3rd nights and Im doing quite well, making progress in investiagtion and then suddenly there comes night and I cant afford a place to sleep. I made a run around town for bottles but at this stage I basically found every single one of them. Here comes decision, do I sleep on street or I sell something? I was missing literally few cents and as sleeping on street in this god forsaken land was like commiting suicide at this point, I went to the thrift shop. I spent like 10 minutes on chosing item I want to sell and I made up my mind. I was going to sell photo of a particular reitred soldier, that is Rene Arnoux, with his girlfriend to afford a place to sleep. I received my money and went to whirling in rags. You can imagine horror in my heart the next day when I saw his friend sitting on a bench alone. I already knew what was going on I was thinking to myself for the rest of the game that he actually died because of me. I blamed myself for the rest of the game and weeks after I learned that he dies no matter what you do, but man, my heart seriously froze there for a moment. I know it wasnt planned but holy shit, no game made me feel this and probably no game will probably ever make me feel this pure, I dont even know how to call it, helplesness and injustice as Disco Elysium.

What I love about this soundtrack is that it really captures the mood of the Whirling in Rags. It's a place where the happiest of people and people at their lowest all gather. The place is constantly caught between a happy and sad state. That's the mood of this song. It's neither happy nor sad, it's somewhere in between.

this song is the emotional opposite to gymnopedie no1 for me, i saw a comment on that song a while ago that said "i'd like to go back, not to change anything, just to feel a few things twice" but this song is filled with so much awareness of the present and inability to reminisce. i can't help but pause and breathe in the moment when i hear this, before reengaging in the rush and worries of my day

I came into Elysium as someone who had recently fallen in love with the band Pulp and constantly prepared myself for the kind of perfect karaoke that would demonstrate the immensity of my soul every night on the drive home from the job I hated. This song is exactly that mood. It's like getting off of work only to go home not sure if you have enough money for the fast food you feel the need to treat yourself to. It sounds like falling asleep just so you can wake up in less than eight short hours and continue "living the dream."

I know a few of you have said that this song describes various melancholic life scenarios, but honestly, I feel like it paints the whole picture of life in general - sometimes it's up, sometimes it's down, sometimes we feel well guided, and there are times we feel lost. Life is a wave. It changes around like the seasons and a lot of the time it's extremely unpredictable, such as the weather can be also. Life is a beautiful, mysterious sorrowful bitter sweet song and dance, but what a hell of an experience it surely is. The trick is to try and enjoy it all, no matter how tough it can get. Ride the waves 🌊

Since then, I have gotten the "dream job" I always wanted, a high school band/chorus director. It pays well but the kids are savages. Like, imagine a fucking choir of Cuno. I'm about to quit and just deliver pizza on the weekends so I have more time to actually LIVE. Whatever the fuck that means... This song is perfect for situations such as these in life. I even voiced some lines for my close friend on his run when he streamed it on discord. This song though...man. It convinced me to play the game. It’s silly, but if the music in a form of media resonates with me a lot, I’m more likely to digest it. This song always gives me a “swimming” feeling when I’m listening to it. Drawing me in on certain “waves”. I love it. Also gives a melancholy feeling. Haha. My sister is buying it on her steam account for me to play tomorrow. I’m excited.Cheers!
