Maybe having someone as reliable and loyal by our side is something that speaks to us on a very personal level? I've been in college for nearly 6 years, getting a 4 year degree. I've watched a lot of friends graduate and move on without me, and I've commuted every year so far, leaving my experience hallow for the most part. Just for one month during this summer I'm finally living on campus, an experience I never thought I'd get considering I'm a super-senior now. But the campus is sad and empty, leaving me unsure If it's even worth it. I'm sitting in a nearly empty warehouse sized chow hall, almost by myself there are so few people. It feels so lonely and a place out of time, but I listen to this song while eating breakfast in this largely empty cafeteria, and I feel a bit more comfortable while I wait for my life to finally get under way... join my friends on the other side of adult hood I guess... A lot how I imagine Harry feels waking up trying to muster the canter to find himself, and a killer, if you wanted to get philosophical about it...

@@hossbonaventure Im right there with you, and I think the most important and moving thing about it is that: even when you do crazy or self destructive stuff, there are characters who still care about you/Harry. In particular Kim, and to a lesser degree even Jean. Most other stories would paint Harry as a completely unredeemable person, but even when you do some stupid stuff (up to the point that Harry is just down right malicious/racist), characters understand how the circumstances of the world pushed you in this direction and are patient with you. Some even doing every thing in their limited power to help steer you towards good decisions. It just makes me feel less alone knowing that you can mess up and feel lost but that people can and will still care about you, even if they literally don't know you at all. Just because we're all human and we're more empathetic than most are lead to believe. That's what felt therapeutic to me.

Quick info: Almost the entire ost was made by Sea Power. The game's songs are all featured on their various albums, usually with vocals. I'm unsure what relationship the band has to the game's dev team. This theme seems to be based on "A Light Above Descending" on the album Sea of Brass (2015), but finds its most faithful analog in "Fire Escape in the Sea" on Everything Was Forever (2022). The fluidity of the melodies and themes are incredibly compelling across their discography.

I know that the Whirling-in-Rags was named after a lyric from an older Sea Power song in the original tabletop RPG sessions that Disco Elysium was based on. Ok, so its 4:31 here in Poland and I cant fall asleep and Im quite drunk so I might as well write my experience from this game for the 3 people that will read it. First of all, Disco Elysium helped me understand things that I couldnt cope with, that is break up and running away from your problems, like alcoholism. Its definetely a game like no other, but what made me feel like this game was made especially for me, was probably 4th night, I cant really remember as I finished this game quite long ago. Namely, I played on hard, and made a promise to myself that I wont sell any "souvenirs", I mean items like postcards, forgive me but I cant really recall what they were called. So there goes 1st, 2nd, 3rd nights and Im doing quite well, making progress in investiagtion and then suddenly there comes night and I cant afford a place to sleep. I made a run around town for bottles but at this stage I basically found every single one of them. Here comes decision, do I sleep on street or I sell something? I was missing literally few cents and as sleeping on street in this god forsaken land was like commiting suicide at this point, I went to the thrift shop. I spent like 10 minutes on chosing item I want to sell and I made up my mind. I was going to sell photo of a particular reitred soldier, that is Rene Arnoux, with his girlfriend to afford a place to sleep. I received my money and went to whirling in rags. You can imagine horror in my heart the next day when I saw his friend sitting on a bench alone. I already knew what was going on I was thinking to myself for the rest of the game that he actually died because of me. I blamed myself for the rest of the game and weeks after I learned that he dies no matter what you do, but man, my heart seriously froze there for a moment. I know it wasnt planned but holy shit, no game made me feel this and probably no game will probably ever make me feel this pure, I dont even know how to call it, helplesness and injustice as Disco Elysium.

I came into Elysium as someone who had recently fallen in love with the band Pulp and constantly prepared myself for the kind of perfect karaoke that would demonstrate the immensity of my soul every night on the drive home from the job I hated. This song is exactly that mood. It's like getting off of work only to go home not sure if you have enough money for the fast food you feel the need to treat yourself to. It sounds like falling asleep just so you can wake up in less than eight short hours and continue "living the dream."

I know a few of you have said that this song describes various melancholic life scenarios, but honestly, I feel like it paints the whole picture of life in general - sometimes it's up, sometimes it's down, sometimes we feel well guided, and there are times we feel lost. Life is a wave. It changes around like the seasons and a lot of the time it's extremely unpredictable, such as the weather can be also. Life is a beautiful, mysterious sorrowful bitter sweet song and dance, but what a hell of an experience it surely is. The trick is to try and enjoy it all, no matter how tough it can get. Ride the waves 🌊

About three months ago I started this masterpiece. I was only making ~$100/week and was at risk of financial catastrophe. Since then, I have gotten the "dream job" I always wanted, a high school band/chorus director. It pays well but the kids are savages. Like, imagine a fucking choir of Cuno. I'm about to quit and just deliver pizza on the weekends so I have more time to actually LIVE. Whatever the fuck that means... This song is perfect for situations such as these in life. Minimalism perfection.

@@BattleToads How is everything going right now? I hope it's well! I've gone back to school after like half a decade, after having my life basically destroyed ten years ago. Socializing with people again is weird, but finally feeling like getting out of that rut is a whole another feeling, even if it's hard, tiring and it hurts sometimes. That song personally reminds me of that and the cold days out waiting to cross the highway, humming songs to myself and just thinking of people, and thinking about writing about them.

I actually passed the check and got away from responsibility. Only returned back there close to 12 pm when I realised I had to sleep and he wouldn't let me in without his 200 pay. And I only had like 10 in my pockets. P.S. the game bugged out and Kim haven't proposed me to sell his stuff at pawn shop and it was late anyway so it was already close. Plus I already failed skill check for begging rich lady for money so I soft-locked the game lol. Reloaded recent save and then both sold Kim's stuff AND passed a check for begging money. Feels good man.

Maybe sitting around or maybe running from here to there and talking with people to investigate a case or about some bugs! Who knows? Life is Good and Bad at the same time. I relate so much to the love story of the main protagonist. And my ex left me during the time I was playing this game. When he(the protagonist) made that phone call to his ex wife I just broke down. Welp. My best friend and a close friend of mine played this game when it originally came out. I knew nothing about it, aside from how it was an interesting looking RPG. I even voiced some lines for my close friend on his run when he streamed it on discord. This song though...man. It convinced me to play the game. It’s silly, but if the music in a form of media resonates with me a lot, I’m more likely to digest it. This song always gives me a “swimming” feeling when I’m listening to it. Drawing me in on certain “waves”. I love it. Also gives a melancholy feeling. Haha. My sister is buying it on her steam account for me to play tomorrow. I’m excited.Cheers!
