It remains very pro-free market and highly critical of labor laws, etc. However, modern liberalism is much closer to the center than classical liberalism. The confusion stems from the US being so right-wing that their most left-wing party would be considered economically center-right anywhere else, with a few social democrats (usually the centrist) being part of it. Fun fact: a lot of republicans would be technically considered liberals too, more precisely classical liberals.
