Being Black Emory

5 жыл бұрын

Our second topic for panelists is gatekeeping blackness. In the wake of Rachel Dolezal's "blackfishing," we thought to ask the question for our panelists: who is in and who is out when lines are drawn?

BLACKNESS IS NOT BASED ON PHENOTYPE OR HOW MUCH VIOLENCE YOU EXPIRENCE!!! Blackness is worldwide and has no bounds because of the diaspora. Blackness is all over the world and can't be defined by 30 million black people in the United States. "Blackness is an experience" what do we tell Black people who live in Brazil who have completely different ones? If black people don't face violence they are less black? We are equating pain and suffering to be synonymous with blackness and nothing more. It is very frustrating.

What they are describing is light skinned privilege which is colorism . Your skin color or features or the amount of struggle you have experience doesn’t determine your blackness. Pain and suffering doesn’t equal blackness. Light skin people are still black and yes we do have it easier and we definitely benefit from colorism but it doesn’t mean you are not black or less black

“We”? You look like you’re on the browner side of the spectrum. You aren’t light-skinned, and certainly not light enough to benefit from light skinned privilege

Thank You for this, both my parents- black and theirs were too. My family varies in shades but we are black and the people that try to separate us in this new generations is all new, we've never done this in 60's and 70's. Very upsetting.

This is a starting point for us as Africans descendants in other countries to communicate the difference between us and this is mainly due to the enslavement of our people we were thought to hate each other and ourselves and we can overcome this slavery abuse by learning of each other and embracing our oneness, great dialogue and myself I experienced those prejudice and that’s racism and we can move pass it

Who is Black? People who are predominantly looking West African features/ phenotype, 2nd complexion comes last. The elephant in the room is Phenotype and Black people need to stop acting like its not present. Being darker skin doesn't make u more Black genotypic , same as light complexion doesn't mean u have less African; skin colour is a gene. Your genotype and phenotype dictates your race. I see only 2 Mixed race persons there, rhe rest is just Black though they may have a little admixture with Sub Saharan phenotype!

Black/Hebrew woman are the bearers of the culture, and pass that culture onto the children. They are the primary teachers of the children. Black/Hebrew men, Black/Hebrew women = Black/Hebrew children. Anything less is just a Bi-Racial person with partial Black/Hebrew lineage. Bi-Racial children with partial Black/Hebrew lineage are NOT the standard or epitome of blackness.
