Welcome to Keybored! Gateron INK BLACKS for More than 50% OFF? Finally, a BUDGET INK BLACK... GATERON CAP V2 Switch
Don't get me wrong... the Gateron Cap V1 switches were not that good... They were scratchy, sounded about average and we're even that cheap.
However, Gateron took those learnings back and brought out the V2... Did an overhaul and gave us a budget Ink Black! Take a look!
I also created a Discord Server so check it out!

Great review! It's interesting that you questioned why they bothered with a v2 when the v1 was so poorly received. In my mind, that's EXACTLY why you try again, and it shows Gateron is willing to grow from their failures (and they succeeded!).
@IronCan88
@IronCan88 2 жыл бұрын
Actually it would have been easier to just make the new product under a new naming instead of a v2 of a failure product. Because people will be more curious and willing to try the new product. So I too agree it's a weird decision they made, and now they need reviews to help gain back trust in this series. Imagine people who bought the first version and we're disappointed,. How likely are they to want to try v2, when the options are countless in the linear switches?
@marcocarag103
@marcocarag103 2 жыл бұрын
@@IronCan88 Yeah, I get what you're saying -- the first impression for Cap switches was bad, and that biases customers against future Caps to some extent. I can also see it being confusing for customers; now we need to sort through things and make sure we're buying V2s rather than V1s (doesn't help that they look pretty much identical), at least until the inventory's been exhausted. But there's trade-offs with full-on renaming, too; it's a non-trivial effort to do so. It takes time and work to plan out a new product launch. Perhaps purely an internal clerical, marketing, and bureaucratic effort, but effort nonetheless -- versus just updating with a V2 (and a legitimately solid set of improvements in the physical product). And it's debatable whether the failures of V1 will truly matter much at all in the long term. With quick fixing of issues (and I consider 7-ish months to be pretty quick), and a few positive reviews from KZbin and elsewhere, memories of V1 failure can fade and V2 and beyond more likely define its growing success. Soon enough, the inevitable new customers won't even realize there was a V1. And all without needing to expend the effort of launching a rename.

@@IronCan88 Also, I just tried to buy some Cap V2 Milkys...and they're all sold out on Elboard. 😞 So, in terms of who would buy V2 -- seems like for the moment plenty of folks would (unfortunately for me, as I think I would prefer the Milky to the Golden).

Got the milky cap v2s and I should say that they are really inconsistent with the factory lube. Also, the stem wobble is great on these, my spacebar is swinging wildly and it's really irritating. Also, without lube they sound so bad.. Scratch is on the next level. I think it's all thanks to the "innovation" in the stem tech. The "cap" on the stem is not smooth inside, it rides on the bottom housing's guide rod on 4 ridges molded inside the cap. So if those ridges are not sufficiently lubed, the switch sounds extremely scratchy and as I said previously, the lube is inconsistent from the factory. Maybe it could be a great switch for some, the sound is unique, really poppy, but I think the Gat Yellow Pro is a way to go. At least the tolerances are really tight and you can experiment with springs on the pros. Cap springs are basically irreplaceable. So, think twice before buying them as your first step into the keyboard hobby.

Excellent content as always, cap switches definitely seem like a good bang for your buck. Is it still worth the price increase for the inks if you have the budget for it?
@Keybored
@Keybored 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm... I think if you have the budget for it, you get the corner smoothness improvement with the Inks! Personally, I think I like the sound of the Cap V2s because they have more pop than the inks. But off center presses do feel better with inks. So if you focus on sound, then the Cap V2s and if you care more about smoothness, then inks!

@@Keybored another thing I think I should mention, if some of your switches have some initial scratch (for me it was 3 of 10) look into the lubing of the stem pole. Since it is thicker, it causes a thockier sound but at the same time causes scratch. The actual stem lubrication was very consistent and smooth otherwise.

I was skeptical, but I have to concur after watching your video. I have some V1's and liked the sound and stable travel feeling, but that was about it. Great review/comparison. I have the Milky Cap V2 and Ink Black V2s and it's hard to tell the difference sound-wise unless you really pay attention. The Cap V2s sound and feel quite good out of the box. Stock Cap V2s actually sound a lot better to me than stock Ink V2s (changed drastically for me lubed/filmed). The off-center smoothness is definitely better on the Inks, which have a more noticeable "gliding" feeling. But unless you type with 1-2 fingers very slowly, the Cap V2s are smooth enough I don't feel much of a difference typing regularly. In hindsight, the Inks don't even seem worth the 2.5x cost. I personally found that the cap v2's sounded more pop (like popcorn, fits the colors hehe) than the inks, therefore higher pitched. And you mentioned earlier that the milkys sound really close to the inks which doesn't add up to the scaling at ~11:25. Except the difference is so minor that the scale had to be spread apart. Meanin blue switches would be about 2km further to the right towards "high". I've been using milky blacks for a good half year now and I think that my keycaps make more noise than the switch itself.

Its actually quite clever. From a manufacturing perspective, when you enlarge a components, the impact of tolerances are reduced. You gain the effect of tighter tolerances without needing to increase your manufacturing costs. Essentially, this means they can make more consistent switches whilst keeping costs low.

So the cap is made out of POM and it gets thinner towards the bottom. When it rides on the guiding rod on 4 ridges molded into the cap it's creating hotspots of pressure on the thin plastic and it bends. It makes the stem really wobbly, especially when it's just pressed. So I think it's really more about saving the cost, there really are less plastic used in each switch.
@JimIBobIJones
@JimIBobIJones 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheMrInadecuada it can be both. The tolerances are much tighter than any other switch. For example the actuation is +/- 10g on the caps, whereas it's +/- 15 on all other gateron switches, including high end switches like inks. That makes the switches much, much more consistent.
@JimIBobIJones
@JimIBobIJones 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheMrInadecuada I also think the stem wobble issue was a 1st gen problem that's been fixed in v2. "Teething problems" inevitably occurs with all chinese switches - whether it's gateron or Kalih - as they always seem to rush new products and designs out without fully qcing and testing them. Think ink black leafs falling out or box stems breaking keycaps.

Awesome review, the only one that cover the V2 caps in depth. EDIT: Now that I look at it again, the central stick of the botton house shouldn't touch anything at all. The top of the cylinder just acts as botton of the keypress. The only thing touching is the bottom housing sliders, as in any other normal switch. Then I don't understand the purpose of it... It's only to let air flow? Does that have some impact on friction? Or is just an easier way to control acustics?

Very interesting. I've got some CAP Milky Yellow switches that I added to an order to get it to qualify for free shipping, but I think they might be V1. Is the acrylic tray with cover only a V1 thing? Also, keep doing the charts. Since sound tests and that vary so much from content creator to content creator, the perceived performance relative to other switches is super important.
@Keybored
@Keybored 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ragnorok64! If they come in a acrylic case, they may be V1. From what I was told the V2 stopped coming inside those fancy cases... looks like gateron put the money where it needed to go lol

@@Keybored I see. Well I guess they will continue to hang out in my Box O' Switches then, and I'll continue to ignore that spending like $30ish dollars on switches I may never use to avoid like$18 of shipping was a massive logical fallacy. I'll just keep telling myself it was a good deal...

I wanna get it but not sure if it's worth

I showed off the cap browns on the new freebird video! They are much much better than standard browns. The sound is THOCC! In terms of the KBD67. I think most will be happy with the KBD67lite stock, or kbd67 lite with the FR4 plate. The V3 adds the aluminum and the alu sound, but not sure if it's worth it as much
