Gates McFadden (Star Trek, Labyrinth) joins us this week to share her decades worth of experience with Staroliou Trek - from her true feelings about certain storylines, to her bond with the Next Generation cast, to her favorite reveals in Picard.
After some ‘inside baseball’ talk about our shared passion for podcasting, Gates shares terrifying stories of coming face-to-face with her stocker multiple times… before there were safeguards or laws that protected women from predatory men.
We also talk about her love for David Bowie, her forgotten kiss with Bill Murray, and her time working alongside muppet master Jim Henson.

She was awesome in Star Trek Picard. We got the best out of Crusher in this series for sure. The comedic timing with her was so good.

I disagree. but yes her acting skills are amazing, if not even sharper than ever (Gates rules) but the CHARACTER was shit to me, ruined as far as I'm concerned. Love my Blu rays of TNG where I can see Crusher for real. That'll be eternal

@@paulpolpiboon9535 agree here, very well played by her, but written in a rather strange way. Yes, characters evolve over time, and if major things happen to you the effects might be quite profound. But TNG Crusher was the "better" character for me, maybe less realistic or a bit cut and dried. But, back then she was an exemplary role model you would strive for, that has changed in Picard, unfortunately.

Gates was underused in TNG and always had such a great screen presence. I was so pleased to see her in the final series of Picard, where she really shone. I hope they get to do more if there are further series of another show with the younger generation, who were especially in the final series too. Good luck to her in the future. She’s just brilliant (as we say in the U.K.).

Picard S3 was awful. It was the most fan-servicey series in TV history. Pretty much every scene was taken from previous Trek shows and films. The only somewhat original idea was the thing about Changelings using the transporters, but even the plot plotline about Changelings infiltrating Starfleet was done before. The storyline was overstuffed with the Borg and the Changelings, both of which had already been defeated in various ways in previous Trek shows. There was hardly anything original in the entire season. It was just a long string of nostalgic memberberries (I really started to check out when Moriarty showed up for literally no reason). Such a disappointing conclusion to the series

Although I've been a huge Star Trek: TNG fan since it first aired, I never spent a lot of time learning about the cast's personal lives, so these interviews with Wheaton, Frakes, Spiner, and now Gates McFadden have been very interesting to watch. I'd love to see the rest of the gang on here sometime, particularly LeVar Burton who has been a favorite since the early days of Reading Rainbow. (Which is apparently 40 years old today!)

Gates* isn't possessive, it is her name, so the apostrophe is wrong. Also the plural of scene is *scenes* and if you wanted to make it possessive the apostrophe would come after the s. I'm not sure why one person would use the two different spellings of "theater/theatre" either. I hereby demote you from Geek Authority to Typo Authority. edit: after my comment you edited yours to correct the first "Gate's" but nothing else, which is stranger than simply making the mistakes originally.

I'm so happy, proud, and glad for this interview! Thank you for having Gates on. Ever since the TNG cast went to theaters, I've always thought she had limited exposure on those films. I understand in a 2 hour movie you can only focus on the 3 leads of the story. Sure, I get that. But wow, she was pushed to far back. I personally thought each film could have focused on a character's specific field. That way each non lead character would have one film to make them shine. Then the films ended, and I barely/ rarely see any individual cameos, interviews, discussions, etc. with Dr. Crusher! Outside of specific cons. I mean guest spots on Big Bang Theory. Or Good Morning America, etc. God bless the show runners of Picard Season 3 for recognizing the character needed a story to address where her character is in the universe. It was like they channeled right into my brain and gave me a TNG 10 hour movie with a focus on Dr Crusher! It's always great to see Gates. And I'm glad that she was given a chance to be with her TNG family, and they all now have a proper farewell for us TNG fans!

Picard season three was amazing. Every episode was like a theatrical release. The storyline, the effects and actors were outstanding and Gates crushed it (pun intended), Amanda Plummer was award winning. It was the best film or television I've seen in the last several years.... Andor was a close second place. Hopefully Paramount decides to do StarTrek: Legacy and Gates certainly could be a part of that show with her son being a crew member.

Terry Matalas (showrunner, directed the Picard finale) did the final episode of The Ready Room with Wil Wheaton (who, when he got the full tour of the new Enterprise-D bridge, had that same excitement he had the first time he stepped foot on the original set) for Picard. He said that final scene with the whole TNG cast, once the scripted stuff was out of the way he just let the cameras roll and had them just be themselves. He said there's about 45 minutes of footage of them just sitting around the poker table talking and joking around. I hope when they release the DVD/Bluray that whole 45 minutes is in the special features

Gates' talent was far underutilized in TNG, and especially in the theatrical releases. That being said, she played an invaluable role as the mother to the teenage character which became Lieutenant Wesley Crusher. Star Trek has always been a youth-oriented franchise and I personally became an obsessed 'trekkie' in my teens because of TNG. Wesley was the character I could Identify with as if he were one of my peers.

I wish I could sit in on some of these interviews before they were edited. The people you interview seem so genuine and down to earth. I liked her in Hunt for Red October and even though I liked Anne Archer, I think Gates would have played a perfect opposite for Harrison Ford's Jack Ryan. Side note, living in New Mexico I don't see too many actors or actresses but have seen a few and I always try to respect their privacy. I remember seeing Natale Portman when she was filming Thor but she was eating lunch and I didn't want to bother her. I work for the county and had to help Commissioner Steven Michael Quezada and we talked for a few as I helped him but respected him. I hate hearing about stalkers and the person being stalked always having to look over their shoulder.

I liked Beverly Crusher better in Picard. And I can see why, back in the day I pitched a script that was Beverly focused and was told it was a no go, a non-starter because "no one" wanted to work with Gates. And the Beverly focused stories that made it through always had her scenes one on one, Beverly with Worf, Beverly with Troi, few Beverly with more than 3 characters. Now I can see it was the problems with the misogyny of the writer mentioned in the pod cast. WOW...let's just keep the women in short skirts as Denise Crosby said just saying "hailing frequencies open, Captain."

I have to wonder if Gates in season #1 didn't feel kinda like Beverly must've felt in the later episode "Remember Me" where she was the only person that really knew what was going on and everyone else was "Whoa....there sure is something wrong with Bev over there!" as the crew slowly disappeared and she was the only one that realized what was going on. I'm pretty close to Wheaton in age so I wasn't paying much attention to why people left shows, etc. at that time. I just remember coming back to the show for season #2 and seeing Dr. Pulaski and thinking "Hey...that's weird. What's up with that?". I never liked Pulaski so I was happy to see Crusher come back. I used to think it was the character of Pulaski I didn't like and no offense to Ms. Muldaur but I saw her other two appearances in the original show and I didn't like her then either. Its possible I just didn't like any of her characters...maybe???? :) She treated Data like crap but I thought "well...that's just her character" ....and it WAS just the character in that case. But, just recently actually!, I saw her second appearance on TOS and thought "Damn...I don't like her here in this third role either!". I'm not entirely sure if it just didn't work out for Muldaur in TNG or this of that or the other thing. It's really all just speculation because we weren't there. I just get the vibe that she thought that she was "above" doing TV and didn't like Trek in general. I do think that she had hesitation about coming into the show in Season #2 so maybe in part it wasn't her fault at all if she took a role she didn't want in the first place. I've never seen her performances in any other show/movie/theatre/whatever BESIDES "Trek"-related things so maybe I'm just wrong I don't know. I know that she didn't fit into Trek-world though no matter which character she played. That's how I feel anyway.....

@@scotlandtheinsane3359 ...I have a channel called Wisconsin Hugs where I did a series spoofing Picard as a quarterback in the NFL. I'm a big fan like you and the spoofs made me realize how much I missed Picard and crew so I'm really happy just to have them back!!!

What a great interview! I never understood the "intimidating woman" idea. If a woman is that capable in so many ways like Gates and she still wants me (since women usually want men who are capable) it couldn't make me feel better about myself, not less. So glad I got to hear this interview!
