It's not the run down shops that is the issue with Gateshead town centre, it's the smackheads and alcoholics. One every 5 yards!

Lived in and around London for 15 years and been back to north east in Gateshead since October last year. I was shocked by how many druggies there were in the town centre, divvies riding pit bikes in the housing estates, 40 year olds blasting new monkey in their Zafira whilst picking up the kids from school 😂 I get that it happens in a lot of places but some of the behaviour up here is just embarrassing.

Agree with your assessment in general I’m was born on Gateshead high street and grew up living there - so I have an affinity with the place That’s the reason me and my partners have decided to help regenerate the place We own The Tynesider It’s just a pity you came on a day we were closed for maintenance issues and snagging - I would’ve invited you in We have also purchased the building next door which we plan to turn into high spec apartments and I’m also involved in the potential refurb of the old Kwik Save building you passed We are now fully commited to making Gateshead High street a decent place again Watch this space Be my guest to call into The Tynesider for a beer sometime You may be surprised Keep up the good work

Love your videos, saw you at the Bigg Market Reunion. I’m Lee’s partner and grew up and live in Gateshead. Lee couldn’t be more local to the High Street as was born on the street behind where his parents still live now. I thought he was mad when he told me he wanted to open a pub on the High Street but it’s really great that there’s independents popping up now. Sapori Italian restaurant is a lovely place and the bars around the Railway Quarter are a great night out and definitely putting Gateshead on the social map again. We are both really passionate about improving the area it’s sad that’s the state of our High Street. I’m involved in a few community and volunteer projects . There’s the Big Help Out this weekend which is an initiative to improve Gateshead town centre asking volunteers to help paint fences, plant flowers and litter pick this Friday and Saturday. We are helping if anyone else would like to join to help make Gateshead better again they can apply www.gateshead.gov.uk/article/28277/The-Big-Help-Out-comes-to-the-town-centre

Wow, you have just taken me down memory lane as its over 40 years since I used to go shopping in the town centre with my parents. Shepherds of Gateshead was a regular store for shopping along with the CO-OP and Littlewoods. So sad to see town centre demise across the country. Thanks for the video👍

I'm 64 years old and born and bred in Gateshead (Low Fell) and moved to Norway in 1986. From a young age I used to take the bus to Shepherds to meet my grandparents every Saturday, went shopping at the Coop. When I was older I had some good nights, at the Trafalgar. My dad and me used to go to all of the Newcastle home games and parked the car at a car park directly across the road from the Town Hall and walked over the Tyne Bridge up to the ground. Gateshead used to be a busy place to be but it looks so depressing now after watching your video. I have to admit most of my family have since moved to Newcastle and when I visit I never go back to my birthplace Gateshead - shame.

Hi Eddie from Tyneside life. Always loved your channel no matter the subject, but it is good to see the videos that are not just concentrating on the beautiful game. These, to me, are just as entertaining as I love the history of anything involved with our Tyneside life. Both Newcastle and Gateshead, North Shields and South Shields, Wallsend and Jarrow, to Newburn and Ryton, have as much interesting history to us all as even after living here for 56 years you teach me things that I never even knew! Keep it up mate and never stop your channel.

Cheers from Seattle Eddy! The Dean Taxis sighting made me homesick. Thanks for the update on my home town. I know it’s kind of sad when they try to modernise old towns like Gateshead and they end up becoming clinical, cookie cutter modern shopping areas with Vue cinemas etc (and jobsworthy security guards!) but I do think it’d be good for Gateshead if they somehow modernised/rejuvenated the old high street as well, or at least redeveloped or made it a more desirable place for people to live/work/play. Hopefully by giving a better life to the community it’ll help heal some of the more troubled or addicted people who now tend to hang around there. They need better opportunities for life!

Great video Eddy, drinking back in the late 80s it was top notch. But these plans for the town centre have been on ice for years, I think the only thing they have done is open the road up from Sunderland Road. One thing they need to do is allow security to get rid of those toerags who always hang about just off Jackson Street.

I like the Vue Cinema. Great value for money. If you walk a bit further down about 2-3 minutes to the arches on Wellington Street you'll pass some more small business cafes and shops. I was recently in Big Fat Doughnut and was quite impressed with the choice and decor inside. I'll be revisiting this summer.

The High Street was thriving when I grew up in Gateshead in the 1970s. The empty plot you passed used to be Gateshead Odeon cinema. The flyover system built in the late '60s only succeeded in taking people straight into Newcastle, thus avoiding Gateshead. The Metro system from 1981 did the same. The Metrocentre in 1986 was another hammer blow to the town centre. Sad to see now.

The council are to blame for the state of the place. They have made it a nightmare to drive around the place to get parked with bus lanes and blocked off roads. If there not careful Newcastle will follow because they’ve done the same over there to.They have some kind of war going on with motorists and it’s driving people away.

I'm nearly 30 and have worked in the town centre for over 5 years but hadn't really been to the place in the 25 years or so before despite living less than 10 miles away my whole life, probably says a lot about its decline over that time period. Really interesting video thanks for making it, loved some of the old photos from how it used to look. You're right that Trinity Square is canny, but I'm not surprised one of the purple jobsworths stopped you pretty much straight away 😄 they do have to put up with a fair bit of crap from some of the types you met at the end there but I'd have had his back if he'd been more concerned about you indirectly antagonising them rather than doing it to boot lick for the almighty Tesco's that dominates the area (blessed be the Tesco) The Wetherspoons isn't actually too bad and always surprises me by the way it gets less rough the deeper you go into it, even with the main smoking area at the back. Some of the charity shops are alright. Even on a really nice day Trinity Square never seems to be too busy, probably owing to Newcastle's appeal. The highlight of Gateshead still is definitely the little Newcastle/Gateshead section just by the High Level Bridge. Station East, The Central, Microbus are all nice drinking spots, where you always either see, hear or feel the trains going over the bridge where 'Station East' must've been the train stop at one time, presumably before the Metros. Good insight I'll be looking out for further episodes and might even see ye one day and will likely let you know I'm a fan of the channel 😊 All the best

Another good video Eddie. I've said it for ages, Gateshead town centre is hands down the worst town centre in Tyne & Wear. Place has always been rough. Only place I've ever been mugged in broad daylight. T'was always thus, though. Ironically, Gateshead has some nice suburbs (and I live in one), so it's not all bad! However, I think they should just level the south side and build some decent housing. The place is more or less unviable with the toon on it's doorstep. Be a good place to live for workers in the city centre.

I still come down to Gateshead/ Newcastle about 6 times a year. And I've said for years that the Gateshead council have let the people of Gateshead down by letting the High Street get into the state it now finds its self in. When the Blue bell closed a few years ago I heard it was because that whole block of shops were getting compulsory purchased by the council. And years later still nothing has happened.

She'd buy fish and we'd head back to the Leam Lane and have lovely fish and chips whilst watching the skiing on "World of Sport." The new shops look great if a little bland, Curleys and the Metropole etc never looked very friendly even when Gateshead was thriving. I live in Mexico now. Easy access from the metro and the number 27 Bus. Have seen it all get worse in the 5 years I have been back in the northeast but good to hear of a regeneration plan. Looking forward to your next tour!!

The council should be held to account for the mess they have made in the town centre. They are the only ones who gave the green light for the demolition of the ugly Trinity Square and car park only to rebuild an even uglier shopping centre with the student accommodation above. I just wonder if I'll still be alive to see the drawings of the High Street come to fruition

Thanks for the video. Used to get to Blue Bell a lot. There was a pub at the bottom of town used to stay open late for coppers, cabbies and other people coming off nights and they'd often let us have a drink. Can't remember the name unfortunately? Haven't been around since '95.

Hi Eddy Things I remember with affection about Gateshead high street from when I was a young lad. Shepards of Gateshead at Christmas and the ride to Santa's grotto. The Odeon Cinema where I saw such classics as Where Eagles Dare and Dads Army. and Jackson the taylor where my dad got his made to measure suits. I currently live in Dubai and look forward to your videos so keep up the good work👍

Another great video. I was hoping you were gonna have a walk past the law court & police station to finish off. Haven't been to the Heed in a while. The last time I was there, there were high rise flats behind the high street up from the park lane. The high street has the same desirables, I see. Some things never change.

Born in Sheriff Hill 78 yrs ago Gateshead High Street, Jackson Street and Sunderland Rd were places to visit with my mum to go shopping. My Dad worked as a maintenence eng for the Dunston Co-op dairy until it closed and then worked in the Co-op town store. Shepherds and Littlewoods were frequented often. The first change and monstrosity was the 'Get Carter' car park, now I dont recognise any or all of it. So So sad to see it like this Eddie. I live near Brighton now and don't get back there that often. But still support the Toon so keep us informed as well eh! Love the Channel.

Great video, bring back “Shepherds of Gateshead, the biggest and the best, find what yr looking for…and the parking is free for the whole familee “. Dominated Gateshead in the 197os, with a great toy department on the top floor next to the cafe and bikes and fishing rods - nice to look at even if needed a lot of saving up. Littlewoods in Northumberland Street Newcastle, but can’t remember going in one in Gateshead. Don’t suppose there’s anything left of the Gateshead Odeon- happy memories of being taken to see Where Eagles Dare and The Battle of Britain amongst other greats. But as for the privatisation of the public realm by the likes of Tesco with their cctv and security guards……they might be better off dealing with shop lifters than decent folk doing a vlog…..but that would involve being useful to society.

Hey, you walked right past the Grey Nag's Head Pub and didn't say anything. I had a real nice afternoon there about a year ago. I was hoping you were gonna say; Aw, mate, this is the best pub in town!!!!!! Anyway, like I said, I liked it. Good jukebox. Also, I didn't realize that was the bad part of town - the bad part looks different in the US.

Another area brought down deliberately by a Labour Council, same with many others such as South Shields. Gateshead used to have excellent retail premises and a good night life. Thought it might of come back to life when Gateshead council managed to obtain funds for urban rejuvenation a few years back but most of the cash was wasted just like South Tyneside council did.

Holy shit.. it's almost unrecognisable, Eddy. I was born in Wardley, grew up in High Heworth, and spent loads of time as a youth in Gateshead Town centre, always venturing into Shephards department store. But I moved north of the river in my early twenties and have never been back into the town centre since. Thanks for this great video, and hopefully, there are better times ahead for my hometown. Cheers, Eddy.

I’m 38. My mother worked at the Traf. I spent most of my childhood in that little area - Saturday mornings in Denton’s cafe and Gateshead Indoor Market. I adore Luder’s old car park and that whole precinct - very, very dear to me. Latterly my mother worked in O’Keefe’s, which I was hoping you’d get to by continuing south. I recently had a poem published about the sculpture which you had in frame that sadly you never mentioned! Anyway, see you in the gym. I’m there hours on end every day too 😂

Excellent video Eddie. I live on the other side of the river near the coast but often pass through here to see a friend in Bensham, for occasional visit to The Sage (Glasshouse)and Tanfield Railway at Sunniside. I wish security would be as strict with "Gateshead's finest" as they are with innocent videographers! It annoys me when i am elsewhere doing my railway vids for You Tube on stations etc when we photograpgers can get picked on easily but anti social behavior is ignored. Keep those great vids coming. Cheers, Jeff.

It's in tough competition Gateshead High St. You've got Newcastle city centre less than a mile north. The metrocentre a few mile to the west. What new business is gonna pick the area, if you have 2 options nearby, which both get higher footfall. Sad to see nevertheless. We can only hope one day, it'll be revived.

I still live in Gateshead and it is absolutely disgraceful, like you I used to go to Gateshead with my Mam in the 70s when I was a kid and she’d take me to Laws herbalist for a glass of Sarsaparilla. I used to go to Woolworths and buy my records and a bag of Pick and Mix. I used to love the indoor market as well, you could buy anything in there. Spent my primary years in the central Gateshead area. They closed quite a few schools which really pushed us out the area. I remember the old markets, signing in the old Tesco car park and city centre for school during Xmas and I remember the weekend markets and being sick on the rugs for sale after too much strawberry milkshake! Used to live in Gateshead from 1997 when I was born and then moved over Newcastle in my teens, so I've spent half my life in Gateshead and half in Newcastle. I have to say moving over to Newcastle really made my love for NUFC grow. Love the Bridges in Newcastle have hundreds of photographs now and memories exploring. The views of the bridges, architecture and St James' does not compare to the boarded up streets of Gateshead

My vivid memories of Gateshead was Bobby Pattinson’s place, and Law’s herbal supplies, in which we got proper Sasparella. Shepard’s of Gateshead, as advertised in all the flea pits. All Gateshead seems to offer now is charity shops, and “ take aways”. I think the Metro Centre, and Team Valley helped kill it. Were it not for “Get Carter”, absolutely no one would care. I guess it’s Mackem equivalent would be Southwick, which, tbf, looks a bit more lively. Another good video Eddy.

Left out? Looked like there was plenty of migrants coming our way in the vid. That's what they ment about levelling up. If the place wasn't already so desperate as it already is. The sods , send even more dole wallers and benefit dependents up ere, to suck off the council budget. The north east has enough on our plates to deal with , economically, without adding to it with more benefit dependants. No more diversity. Just hard working folk adding to the pot, instead of raping it. And backhand every smack head and trouble maker out the town centre.

Tragic isn't it Eddy! When I was a bairn (I'm 79 now) the place was buzzing. Both my parents were from Gateshead High Street - my grandmother ran a pub called The Fox & Lamb (she brought up five kids including my mam) - my grandad didn't come back from 1914-18 war. This pub was situated on the corner next to The White Fleece (now Robert Walker premises). My other grandmother ran a general store/small shop in Chandless Street/Peareth Street - (she also brought up five kids including my dad) this grandad of mine also didn't come back from 1914-18 war. I remember a great aunt of mine had a second-hand clothes shop on the High Street too.
