Gateway Arch National Park is located in St Louis, Missouri and it is a 90-acre park that has beautiful grounds to explore, an old courthouse, and the Gateway Arch. This monument to westward expansion is a beautiful feat of archetecture. You can take an elevator all the way to the top if you are interested but note that it is small. You can see more about the elevator in this video. Let me know what you think in the comments.

During construction there was a crew on the Illinois side of the river waving an American flag because they knew video cameras were at the arch. My father is there standing next to the flag. That video is in the museum below the Arch. Thanks for the Memories.

I remember visiting the arch as a child and riding up to the top in those tiny elevator capsules with my family. It was a great adventure! It did feel weird to walk out into the middle of the arch, knowing that no supports appeared below. But the views! Wow. This is worth a visit. I'd like to go again as an adult.

I went about 15 years ago, and had no idea what those elevators would be like. I am tall and very claustrophobic, and I don't remember that there was a test capsule there. I do remember that I got to the door of the capsule where a mom and a little kid were in it. My tall brother, his tall wife and I were squeezing in, and I was sure I was going to faint, but I looked at the excitement and lack of concern in the little boy's face, and I thought if he can do it, I can do it, and I knew I really wanted to have that bucket list experience, so I braved it. I was so happy I did. When we got to the top. my brother and I laid down over the window ledges as far as we could so we could see both the feet of the arch at the same time. It was soooo cool. I actually love heights, so that part was awesome. The sway from the wind was very noticeable though! My sister in law had to be calmed down by a guard over that! Great video, as always.

I watched it go up when I was in high school. My name is in the top last section in the time capsule. They had us sign a paper to put it in there. I was there for the last section being placed and when the strut went up to hold legs until it was finished, Went up in it first day and was the 87th person to go up. I got a certificate for that and a button. I saved every newspaper clipping while it was built and still have them all over 58 years later.

There’s definitely a lot to do at the Arch if you’re claustrophobic (or acrophobic). The museum at the bottom alone could take about 2 hours to get through.

How's the ventilation in the elevators?... warm stuffy air really adds to my claustrophobia, but moving cool air keeps it at bay. Maybe just go in cooler months to make the trip easier (as long as the heater isn't blasting lol). Nice video of the place and definitely looks interesting to see in person. Cheers! Pete - KI7LIL

interesting they let you in one at a time. Would think they will let the whole fam in at once. I don't mind tight space, but I think Hoover Dam's elevator is by far the most crammed one yet. They literally push 30 people into one elevator and ignore the warning sounds.

It’s because it is the Gateway to the West. Represents St. Louis as the starting place for many that settled to the West after president Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana Purchase. That is why it is also called the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. The park includes the arch, grounds and museum and the old courthouse.
