I think those signs are unique to that particular stretch of Aussie freeway. Everywhere else in Australia that I've seen with electronic variable speed limits (including in Brisbane) uses a stretched out sign. Thanks for watching!

@@FreewayBrent as a Brisbanite I’ve never given these signs a second thought. What’s so unusual about them?
@FreewayBrent
@FreewayBrent 3 жыл бұрын
@@BD-yl5mh I have literally never seen them in any other Australian state or in the other countries I've been to that closely follow the United States' MUTCD (Manual of Traffic Control Devices). I think Queensland literally made their own signage for those overhead electronic speed control signs, lol. They do the job though; very easy to understand and read.

For those interested, as stated the bridges were duplicated with the first bridge (southbound) you crossed was the new bridge with the second bridge (northbound) was the original bridge opened in 1986 which had two way traffic, 3 lanes each direction.

Seen pictures of the span in its original configuration; that must have been something of a harrowing experience. Must say the reconstructed Gateway Motorway & Bridge is one of my favorite urban rides in Australia. Great stuff.

Like Melbourne Brisbane had a 1960s freeway plan drawn up by Wilbur Smith and Associates with a number of inner city routes never built. M1 Gateway was the north-south freeway east of the city, the M5 western and M3 southeastern freeways were built but an inner city Central Freeway going around the CBD was not. Later the Inner city bypass did eventuate on the northern edge. A ghost bridge in Bowen Hills exists on Markwell Street where the Central Freeway was to go underneath. In addition a reservation exits from the northern suburbs which was from the Northwestern freeway - only the very end portion has been built as Gympie Arterial Road.

So cool. Do you have any specific links about Wilbur Smith's influences around Brisbane? Would love to read more. Thanks!

A map of the proposed system can be seen here: www.qhatlas.com.au/map/development-plan-brisbane-roads-1965 At the time Brisbane still had its tram system like Melbourne with the tracks set in concrete. BCC mayor Clem Jones along with this report recommended closure which was helped along by a major depot fire in 1962. The system finally shut down in 1969 with most of the tracks still under the bitumen to this day.

Interesting 1970s film on driving safely on freeways - the scenes were filmed on the Southeastern freeway, now part of the M3 in Woollongabba near the Captain Cook Bridge. Australian urban freeways all used Botts dots for the lane markings until the 2000’s kzbin.info/www/bejne/amHZi2iMrs6CndU

You must live somewhere pretty close to the Eat Street Markets then? If so, I'm envious, lol. The closest thing we have to something like that in San Francisco is the Off The Grid food truck gathering every Friday evening, but it doesn't have the physical infrastructure constructed like over at the Eat Street Markets. Thank you very much for watching!

On the south side actually, up on a hill so a clear view to the bridge. Have not been to check out Eat Street yet, they recently moved a little closer to the bridge with a better space for vendors and customers - they were making way for some development next to the cruise terminal at Hamilton.

I hope so, too. My layover would be at the very end of August or very early September. I think the government was quoted as saying the project would be delayed 3 months from the originally announced opening date, so I guess that would put the revised opening date around mid-July. Really excited to check out Auckland's motorway network and walk around some of Auckland's best districts...beyond the waterfront and CBD, Ponsonby, Parnell and Newmarket all look pretty cool to me. Thanks for watching!

Thank you very much! I did see your comment a few days ago, but I've been incredibly busy and just forgot to respond. Catching up on comments now. In case you're wondering why I have videos from so many random places...I actually grew up and still reside just outside of San Francisco, but my girlfriend and 16 month old son are located out in Sydney, Australia (they're both Australian citizens). Hence, all the Aussie videos (I've been a half dozen times over the past 3 years), and since I've been utilizing Auckland for elongated layovers to help break up the time I spend in the air, I've been able to grab quite a bit of footage from there as well. Next time I head back to Sydney, I'm going to make a run for Wellington and get some Wellington Motorway and more Highway 1 & 2 footage from there. In the future, I'm going to look at other destinations for layovers and filming opportunities between San Francisco and Sydney.

@@FreewayBrent Nice one, good you see your famz in Sydney congrats. I travel to see my parents in Syd on occasions too, well its just a quick jump across the Taz compared to where you come from, but Syds a nice place. Also San Fran is a good looking place, I like the Golden Gate Bridge and the fact its in California. Its great to see how other countries build major roads with infrastructure, signs, environment ect. I will definitely look forward to future videos you make of Welly and other places around the Pacific on your travels.

Also I- 275 and I- 471 have a nice view, but 71 75 is the best. We have some interesting bridges, especially this one bridge, forget what it's called but it's a very old 2 way bridge into downtown.

Absolutely love the views and steep descent along the NB ride along I-71/I-75 as you drop down towards the river, as well as the ride through downtown along I-71 and US 50. Great stuff. Will also agree with you that you get some nice views along 471. FreewayJim has you covered for Cincinnati. I do have some footage from Pittsburgh that I never worked on that I should finally get around to...I know it's not Cincinnati, but having some Midwest coverage would be nice.
