These are great suggestions. I might pick a couple up to try and get more friends to play. Thanks!

I played Descent a few times here and there a few years back, and now find myself collecting Tau for 40k. It is a good game to get hooked on miniature-type gaming.

The old Milton Bradley Heroquest. After playing that for a few years, I found White Dwarf Magazine in a newsagent and it was love at first sight.

I have been touting these games for a while now as well. Thank you for this! I have the original space hulk sitting on the shelf - box is in rough shape but the game is still amazingly fun to play! Was also nice to add terminators from my 40k army to add some interest. Have been playing the new OGRE game - very fun to play if you can get used to the new faux 3D models - rules are pretty much the same as the old school rules - very easy for new people to pick up. Leviathans is also fun - hope to throw down with glenn soon. Don't get me started on x-wing and how awesome that is! Great video (again) - keep it up!

I only recently discovered your channel and have been binge-watching your videos over these last rainy weeks on the East Coast. Thanks for all the great painting tips. I've found Memoir '44 to be a great game for getting friends to cross-over from board to miniatures war-gaming, since it has a "foot in each camp"...hex board terrain mixed with 3D pieces. Battle Lore works the same way for those who prefer fantasy to historic combat.

+Richard Klug I know a guy that has recently painted his whole Memoir '44 set. He loves to run it at conventions. Thanks for watching!

Mantic has a great gateway game called Project Pandora: Grim Cargo. It is reminiscent of Space Hulk but not the same as that older game. You play Corporation troopers dealing with Veer-myn (Space Ratmen) invaders. It plays really fast and is easy to learn. I highly recommend this game. I comes with Minis and they are fantastic.

I've played the fantasy version of this with the dwarves and the skeletons, I believe it's called Dwarf King's Hold. It's a good gateway game, I agree. Maybe I'll have to make a video about alternatives to Space Hulk. Thanks for watching!

Two older games that may work and you could probably find on eBay/Amazon are Shogun and HeroQuest. The former really focuses on troops, but they're represented by on a few figures (even though the game comes with a ton of minis) and like X-Wing - from what I hear - moves are planned out ahead of time so that things take place almost simultaneously as the turn phases progress. HeroQuest, obviously, is more focused on single miniatures but it still gives that feel of 3D representations and environments that a more intricate miniatures game evokes.

I think one could be Dust Tactics, its kinda a Board game and the minis are pre-assembled and primed and all you need is to buy the Dust Warfare book and it turns it into a Wargame. Also while Space Hulk is super expensive theres a couple games that are similar and are very easy to get. One is Sedition Wars from Mcvey and CMoN and the other is Privateer Press's Level 7 games, the first just used Cardboard but the newer one actually has minis.

That's a very good point! Dust Tactics would be a pretty good gateway to miniatures games, especially because of the easy upgrade to Dust Warfare. Unfortunately, I'm not really fond of Dust Tactics (but LOVE Dust Warfare) so that's probably why I didn't think of it in my video. Thanks for watching!

tabletopminions I know there is not a lot of love between the Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare crowds, but I like Dust Tactics and was surprised it wasn't on the list. Great video anyway. Cheers!

Strangely enough, you can still find copies of it in one of FLGS where I live for about $120, and there's always eBay.

Necromunda was my gateway game. That led to 40K, which led to Mordheim, and then fantasy. Then I got burned out on GW's pricing and shifted to DZC and now Warmachine. Love the whole aspect of the game from painting to tactics.

I went the other way- from 40k to Tannhauser which has great alternative WW2 theme and interesting mechanics. Apart from my copy of Space Hulk I also think that Incursion by Grindhouse games has great minis and there's a new set on the way (kickstarter).

Battle Tech was my Gateway game. I think any game where you do not have to buy very many figs (A Battle Tech Lance was 4 figs) turn into great gateway games, because you buy more figs to give yourself more options or to play with others that don't have figs.

I'm not sure if this is the right video for this comment, but I recently talked to a movie fanatic and they told me about Disney's DVD strategy where they only sell certain DVD's at certain times so maybe the idea is if they only release it occasionally and it's limited addition then they can sell it when they need a quick stock boost?

What about Deadzone from Mantic? It seems to straddle the line between board and miniature game too.

I'll admit, when I first saw the Kickstarter for this, I was more interested in the terrain than the game. However, I'm starting to hear more good things about this system. Hopefully I can get a demo in somewhere (maybe at Adepticon?) and learn more about the actual gameplay. Thanks for watching!

I’m a big board game fan and collector. I’ve been reluctant to get into war gaming based on the perceived high barriers to entry - both in cost and in learning an extensive system. I’m interested in learning to paint miniatures for the sake of that aspect of the hobby in and of itself. I’m looking into board games that have paintable miniatures and smaller skirmish games. We shall see how it goes...
