It's a tad different, but can also consider Gaslands into it. All you need is a 20 dollar rulebook, any matchbox cars you have kicking around, and any old D6s or scatter dice you have sitting around minimum. There is online providers for plastic templates, kitbashing parts and more, but those aren't required for getting started.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one recommending Gaslands. It is dirt cheap to get into, can be played with only a little terrain, and can be played in different ways, such as racing, deathmatch, capture the flag, and others. It also fuels the imagination better than quite a few wargames with the kit-bashing of the toy cars.

I would also recommend Godtear by SFG, clean ruleset, but has immense amount of depth, although it's still dice chucking, positioning and the timing of activating each unit is highly tactical and strategic. Although you don't build decks like Underworlds, you choose which 3 Warbands to bring in the the fight

Underworlds. Absolutely no question. Its gotten people i know that have only ever played card games to pick up minatures, its gotten people who have only played videogames to pick up minatures. Its cheap, simple to get into with depth and competitiveness if you want it, low model count to get people over the worry of that and maybe to even try painting and a few people have even shown up when we hang out asking me to help put their AoS start collecting boxes or even moved into trying stuff like Malifaux and Bushido. Its like everything i see people find off putting about jumping into stuff like Kill Team being swept off the table entirely or dramatically lessened. Its gotten little kids into minatures, its gotten people in their 50's who were always too put off to make the plunge into them. Love or hate GW in general there is just nothing better for the price, variety and ease of entry.

Gaslands is a great: Easy rules (especially the "rule of carnage"), cheap (your friends need 1-5 hotwheels) and a lot of fun. Grab your friends after the first game, get some (small) old electronics parts, some wire and superglue and you can customize your cars together. Talking board games: CMON's Bloodrage and Rising Sun are great games and farmiliarize people with miniatures, while also using simple mechanics (like model stats, ability and modifiers) to transition into wargiming.

I am in the middle of designing a true model agnostic skirmish game. No name yet. It uses a tabled D6 combat system with interesting character creation rules. That allows for any model to be used (within reason) even lego minifigs. The setting has been done in a way that allows you to use books or dishes as terrain. Without feeling like you need to pretend there something else. Alot of boardgame players now have all of these games full of miniatures just sitting in boxes. I know I do, So I came up with a way to use them.
@firefly1285 жыл бұрын
It depends on where the player is coming from. If it’s RPGs, I think Kill Team is a better gateway game because it has customizable gear on named infantry characters that gain experience. WarCry lacks the gear customization so that’s a harder sell. If it’s MTG or other deck building games they’re coming from, then Underworlds. If they’ve never played any kind of tabletop wargame, then Blitz Bowl is probably the answer. Sadly I think WarCry lacks the choice of aesthetics that the other systems mentioned above do. I can’t really recommend it to anyone.
@tabletopminions5 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I don’t really see Kill Team as a ‘gateway’ game - it doesn’t really bridge the gap between board games and tabletop wargames; it IS a wargame, albeit a smaller-scale skirmish one. It’s a great entry to miniature wargames, but it’s not the ‘gateway’ that games like Underworlds are in my mind. Thanks for watching!

I'm primarily a board/CCG/RPGer that dabbles in light skirmish games, but the main reason that I can't really get into wargames is the "hobby" aspect of it. I don't enjoy assembling or painting miniatures at all and I don't want to pay to have it done either. Consequently, the "wargames" that I end up playing the most are the ones where the hobby aspect is minimized. The first game that got me in was X-Wing because I like Star Wars, the minis came painted and assembled, and it was easy to understand. I thought the Funkoverse system was pretty fun and it seems like it fits the intro skirmish game as well. I also think that Wildlands (or Judge Dredd Helter Skelter if that's the theme you prefer) is a board game that also has some decent wargame adjacent vibes while being easy to grok. I've played Underworld, Age of Sigmar, and Warmachine with a friend who wanted to get me into the games with his delightfully painted minis and didn't like any of them. Maybe there is a wargame (beyond X-Wing) for me out there somewhere, but the expected hobby component (and a lot of times, the themes) largely keeps me away. The reason I watch this channel at times is because, as much as I don't enjoy painting, I do like how it improves how my board game and RPG miniatures look, so I suffer painting for my favorite games, but only for those.

Completely agree with Underworlds. It is at this weird intersection of minis skirmish game, board game, and living card game, and works great both casually (try multi-player or the Gargant scenario) or competitively. I love that the warbands are self-contained and have a lot of variety -- it's fun and reasonably quick to paint one up and have a sense of accomplishment and some new shinies on the shelf! Plus the game is fun, balanced, and quick to play ... my observation about many other minis games is "pick any two". Now Underworlds was my "gateway" to full hobby (build/modify/paint) but not to minis -- I went X-wing => Imperial Assault (started painting) => Underworlds => Star Wars Legion & WarCry. But as soon as a new warband comes out the other stuff goes on the back burner. For RPG gamers wanting to bridge to minis I think I'd recommend son-of-Frostgrave, Rangers of Shadow Deep, though (I think it's 2019?) -- it does have RPG elements Underworlds lacks, though I think you can build an RPG-like campaign out of Underworlds without too much effort.
@MrNyerk5 жыл бұрын
As a retired RPG gamer, I think Warcry is more appealing to me. It looks like a game in which one can imagine (or tell) a story. Plus I dislike having to build a deck (card game) for a board game (even if I also am a retired MTG ranked player). Building a warband, choosing items and traits, that's coherent with my roleplaying view of a game; but adding deck of cards is not. So, I guess which game is the "best" gateway game is related to the gamer's personal tastes and background.

depends on the person and what kind of games they already play if any. I'd only recommend underworlds if i knew the person had a competitive personality. They games can be very brutal sometimes. But because is so complete... providing great miniatures that are world class, tight ruleset, a hope of finding a competitive community, and everything comes in one box to get started. But i always tell people that in order to play the game competitively you should expect to have to get every starter set, but they are starting to use rotation like MTG runners up.. xwing, gaslands, zombicide. nearly every company has a boiled down version of their game these days to be a gateway game.

I gave in to the Underworlds hype somewhat recently and bought a lot. I love the models, but hate, absolutely hate, the game. I don't find the gameplay interesting at all and I loathe the deck construction aspect. On the other hand, I love Warcry. It plays fast and fun, unlike my experiences with Underworlds (which is also fast but not fun imo), and you can play without deck or list construction. It feels much more thematic than relying on 50% chance attacks (but frequent one-shot kills) and without the garbage of relying on drawing the right cards on top of the extreme dice randomness.

While I agree, I would like to throw in some names which lead my from "nah, not my thing" to the currently intermediate "hey, i might give it a try with warcry": - Space Hulk - I think you already mentioned it as THE gateway game of games workshop which they mysteriously decided to ignore. - Dungeon Saga - which is an asymmetrical game in the style of HeroQuest.. but actually not a very good one. I doesn't seem to know what it would like to be... it is neither a HQ clone nor a real competiative strategic game. But it certainly builds a bridge from cooperative/roleplaying dungeon crawl to competative game with miniatures, different abilities, ranges, movement, etc. But mostly I think AVP would have served the purpose of a gateway game for tabletop best. AVP is more or less a child of Space Hulk and the Alien-Predator-Franchise. In its base boxed set it is competative board game, where 2 to 3 players take charge of predators, aliens and colonial marines/yutani forces to complete mission objectives. Each faction feature vastly different abilities, restrictions and style of play. There were (and still are) a lot of specific models to buy as add on in push forces. They feature a point system to balance out customized forces. AND - and that is I think what it makes the obvious gateway game. They offer(ed) a slim book to buy in which they detailed the tabletop rules for use with the boardgame content. Unfortunately, Prodos lost the license from Disney and had to stop the support. But you can still find the core boxes, and various expansions at ebay or local stores. Even the APC unit. Although the dropship is not available as it was custom-made for each order.

Since the core rules straightforward, it allows teaching very young kids how to play miniature wargames pretty simply and several parent-players in our Relicblade group have used the games mechanics to introduce their kids to playing with models, measuring in inches in addition to simple arithmetic. (relicblade rarely goes above the 12).

Underworlds hands down. It is what got me into wargaming.

Underworlds may loon like a gateway game, but if you are looking for a good deck yiu have to buy more and more team. Quite discouraging

I love WH:U, but I'd suggest Blitz Bowl as an entry game.

I have a question for everyone. I am looking for a . . . anti-Gateway game. So, a sub section of my friends and I play board games, I have tried a number of time to introduce them to table top games and the concept of spending any time 'assembling' their force is not their thing. The length of most of the tabletop games also does not appeal to them. However I greatly enjoy 40k on Friday nights with my other friends. Is there a game out there that will give me the feel of a miniature game, while at the same time being a board game for my friends. Conditions would be self contained and game play 30-90 mins. While at the same time giving me my miniature fix.

Blackstone Fortress can be very self contained as a board game. It is kinda a campaign but you can also just play a couple rounds quickly

Battletech. Best gateway drug ever. It has everything, and it can be cheap to get into but expensive to REALLY get into. Even has a card game if you can find them! (Super cheap if you buy the old Clix.)

I disagree on Underworlds mostly because it's a card game with minis and not a miniature game with some cards. There is no list building, 3 dimensional terrain rules, tactical movement, LOS, etc. The fact you have only 12 activation in the whole game makes what you do with the models alone a very small part of the game. I think Warcry (for example) is a better gateway wargame from GW.

Excited for Infinity Defiance! Rangers of Shadow Deep is a good one, Frostgrave is old news. No surprise the topic of conversation is ANOTHER GW game. You should get them to kick you down some money, you push their stuff like you're a shareholder.

Another great video, I’d love to see you do a video on how to manage impulse buying with new models. I think all of us have stacks of models unpainted but if you could teach some tips on how to exercise restraint I think a lot of people would benefit. Keep up the good work!!

If Deadzone were more accessible, I'd throw their hat in the ring.

JeffersonJohnson I am interested what makes it inaccessible?

@@Daemonish physical availability, half baked assembly instructions. I don't think their models are too friendly to people new to the hobby. Mostly physical availability. 90% of my stuff came from Ebay. P.S. put a Mazon/Mercs list online to get more mileage from Star Saga...make a Mazon. It takes significantly more work to get into Mantic stuff than GW. And I say this as a Mantic fan
