So far, we have encountered the nominative and accusative cases in Arabic. There is a third case that students must also learn, namely the genitive case. It is used to show possession (ownership), as well as after prepositions. We came across it briefly in Book Two, p. 25 where we learnt that singular nouns
coming after a preposition usually take a kasra. We will now look at the genitive case in more detail.

Thank you, Imran. This is an excellent series. In your first example above, “the pupils” is translated as تَلامِيذُ, and you explained that it is carrying damma as it is plural and the subject. Is this is a broken plural, as it doesn't have the ونَ ُ ending of a sound plural? Could you also please advise how the ending for this word would differ (if at all) in the accusative and genitive cases, both for definite and indefinite forms. You probably cover this elsewhere, but I don't remember seeing it yet. Thanks!

yes it is broken plural, since it doesnt follow sound masculine plural, despite being about a group of male pupils
