You can survive for little while after the appendix ruptures, I'm living proof. I didn't feel sick until my appendix ruptured in the afternoon and it was the next morning when I had surgery.
@EastTexasRanching
@EastTexasRanching 3 ай бұрын
@@PandaBear62573 Yes, it does depend on the toxic nature of what gets into your abdominal cavity, and how well they can clean it all up. My cousin had his burst on the way to the hospital, and they almost turned around because the pain let up. But they decided to go ahead instead. He survived, but it made for a much more extended stay after they laid him open and cleaned him up. I think they can remove them laparoscopically if they are not too far along to rupturing.
@PandaBear62573
@PandaBear62573 3 ай бұрын
@EastTexasRanching mine cocooned the toxicity but I did have to stay in the hospital for a week with a drainage tube. They can scan for the appendix now, I think with CT. And they do remove an inflamed appendix via laporoscopy now. My sister had her removed about 10 years ago this way. She was home just a few hours after surgery. A lot of surgeries are done this way now. I've had two major surgeries that way in the last 6 years. The recovery time is significantly shorter.

It was exactly the same for me in 2006. I thought I had just eaten something wrong. The doctors didn't wait long and got me an operation straight away.

Mine ruptured when I was 4 yrs old, though I don't remember much. I was in hospital for 10 days; they said I nearly died. But apparently we can last more than just a few minutes after that rupture. It left me with abdominal adhesions (internal scar tissue) so extensive that I could never had kids.

Former medical imaging student here. To answer Michael's question, yes they can scan for appendicitis via ultrasound or CT scan. Ultrasounding appendicitis can be difficult due to bowel gas and the appendix likes to hide from scanners. Michael probably would leapt into the ceiling the moment the ultrasound scanner hit the appendix. Glad he got better.

My husband was out of State for business (had retired from the USAF & started working for the railroad) when he suffered an attack. He said he thought he had some bad Chinese food (we love Chinese food!) and was up all night with bad “indigestion”. Never called me to say he was going to the ER - only called AFTER they did surgery- opened the call with “Don’t worry…. I’m ok…” before saying he had appendicitis & underwent surgery. Typical of him, but nerve wracking for me and our kids. Over twenty years later and he still laughs about the “worse case of indigestion” he ever had. 😱❤️. He’s so much like my dad was. Recently he had a bout of pancreatitis - THAT got to him and being he just happened to be home, he couldn’t hide it from me. Our son lives at home and helped me browbeat him to agree to go see the doctor - got one of our daughters on the phone to help. Turned out there was some virus going around and a number of people had the same thing. He said THAT is a pain he NEVER wants to feel again. Glad Michael Shanks had a doctor who did not let him talk his way out of the surgery - I am sure HIS wife feels the same….. (don’t know if they were married at the time). J

@joniaq6372
@joniaq6372 3 ай бұрын
@@mardus_ee My husband wasn’t worried about the expense of getting treatment as we had good insurance - from his job with the railroad and the Tricare Prime we were paying for (Military makes you pay for the “better” insurance and as I was in need of frequent iron and blood transfusions due to severe anemia (finally got the doctors to admit I was right & after over twenty years of treatments they did the necessary surgery just as the covid mess was really going crazy - no more anemia!) - we didn’t have to pay the co-pay as one wiped out the other. Was extremely helpful when our son was in hospital for a couple of months after he attempted to end his life (failed because he moved the shotgun at the last second)…. Over a million covered - and we paid $0. Even if we did not have the insurance, there’s no way my husband would have avoided getting care. His thoughts were that he could wait out the pain…. He couldn’t just wait out the pain when at home because I know how to research things and, even though he is now blind, our son gets on the computer to see if he gets the same information that I do and we don’t let my husband’s stubbornness win - insurance or not. People used to say British medicine was great, but we have family there (husband’s family came from Malta & some emigrated to the US, some to England, Canada, and Australia) and know how difficult that is to use , so it’s not always better care. Emergencies are seen, but they have issues which is why I will always fight against a government run system here! Look at Medicare and imagine it even worse! Nightmare….. Just saying…..

Eventually it ruptured, my dad had to rush me to hospital in the car and I was in surgery within 30 minutes. I pretty much ended up having over four pints of blood through transfusion to stop sepsis and spent two weeks in hospital before they let me home.The pain was like nothing I could ever describe, my body was contorted into the foetal position and my dad had to carry me in like that.

At least you were a 27 yo male: I was a 16 yo female. I told the ER staff that, "all my female family members had their appendix out, so please test for that first." Well like you said, no tests in the 90s. I told them I'm not pregnant cuz I'm a virgin, and there WAS a test for that in the 90s! But instead of that urine or blood test for pregnancy, a male clinician put fingers up holes I didn't even had...I silently cried the whole time and has traumatized me my whole life. (In addition, my abusive father had custody of me at the time and refused to bring me to ER for hours: I told him I was gonna walk so he finally reluctantly brought me.) Shortly afterwards, others came in and said, "We're taking you to surgery for your appendix now." Yes, mine ruptured too - was on IV antibx for a few days. I'm glad to see from other comments they can easily scan now! Hopefully that saves young females from enduring a lifetime of trauma.

They removed it within 2 hours of arriving, was on the verge of rupturing. These days removal via keyhole surgery it can be a day op, but like Michael, I was bed ridden for a week.

Don't know if it is serendipity or Google. Knowing way too much about me but this came up in my stream while I'm home with a stomach bug. There actually are diagnostic tests for appendicitis, including a blood test for elevated white blood count, and imaging that can be done with an MRI and CT scan. But the standard old fashioned physical exam remains the standby. Early stage appendicitis can be diagnosed with a physical exam but often will require additional testing. However, if a person goes into an ER with with signs of a fever and advanced appendicitis, there isn't time. They need to get it out before the appendix ruptures and there is a flood of bacteria into the abdominal cavity, which can lead to sepsis. If you have signs of a stomach bug, fever, and localized pain a doctor. In early stages, appendicitis can be treated with antibiotics. Even if antibiotics alone are not enough to treat the appendicitis, it's always better to do the surgery before the infection spreads. At any rate. I'm glad everything went well with Michael Shanks. As with James Spader in the movie, Shanks's Jackson was the heart of the show

But when theyre not sure, thats why it's called exploratory laparotomy ("ex lap") or a diagnostic laparotomy...they go in with tools and cameras through the small incisions, do what they need to do and convert to an oprn incision if they have to.

Appendicitis is scary stuff. Always amazes me that the most absurd stuff can kill you. This tiny little sack can just decide to get infected, swell, tremendously, literally burst spraying your body's cavities with toxic bacteria, and you just die. I knew someone tangentially though who was a little on the heavy side who had their appendix burst on them, and they just went from feeling miserable and flu-like with the usual pain, to feeling sudden intense pain, and then their symptoms began to subside. Basically their weight kept pressure around it so the body was able to clean up the remnant infection in a localized area, and when they finally went to the doctor, they diagnosed it as a ruptured appendix, gave them some supplemental antibiotics, and said "Yeah, no point in opening you up now, your body did what we would've done. Good job. Next time maybe just come in to see us."

I didn't know there was a real-appendix-reason for the in-show-appendix. All the stuff with the surgery felt so natural in the story. I was thinking like _They needed an episode when SG1 doesn't have Daniel around so they put him under the knife_ It sometimes happens that a certain character would help to progress through the plot in a way, that doesn't work well for a show, making it less challenging, less interesting adventure. So how to make it harder for SG1 to use the asgard technology on board of damaged asgard spaceship? Take away the guy, who understand ancient languages and can read nordic runes. So in the end it all worked well.

Michael I extremely lucky, I was born with a defective appendix from birth as a rare congenital anomaly. I misdiagnosed for 3 years and only being given antibiotics which lowered the symptoms, but I was on my deathbed at age 3. An ER surgeon passed by an immediately noticed what other doctors had been misdiagnosing those 3 years. Apparently my situation was 1 per every 100,000. It really is that hard to detect despite being a an issue with 5-7% population in their early teens or 20's. Michael really had a good doctor to have recognized the likely cause.

Even then, they could've used an ultrasound to check his appendix, or they could've done the more invasive scope up the rear. People didn't usually just die from appendicitis, even as far back as the early 1700s. I know the first recorded appendectomy took place in the early 1700s. They knew how to check for it and how to remove it back then. Yes, odds are you'd die if it had ruptured, and they didn't get it all out, but survival rates were relatively high if they caught it in a timely manner. Mine had ruptured. I was curled up on the bathroom floor, almost dead, when my (now ex) wife found me. I'd been laying there for a good 10 hours. They took one look at me, felt my abdomen, and tapped the bottom of my foot. My reaction was enough. They cut me open and saw how bad it really was. I was septic. They said I should've died. The surgeon was top-notch. Even with his skills, there were issues, and they had to go back in twice. My recovery was Hell.

Oh, yeah. When you show up with abdominal pain, the doctors do NOT screw around. I remember having really bad stomach pain, and I assumed it was just bad chicken (which had happened to me in the past and resulted in the same kind of pain). When it didn't get better I went to urgent care, right around the corner. As soon as I mentioned it was stomach pain they told me "Go to the ER, now." In my case, it turned out to be the gall bladder and not the appendix, but, yeah. No questions, no screwing around, just "ER, nao."

You mean the pain or the dying? Because I've died several times ever since childhood (I'm not joking, I've literally been resuscitated several times, and one time it took so long that the ER even called in grief counselors for the rest of my family before I came back to life), and I've never found it to be "life changing".

@@cynthiajones8763 I mean which part was life changing for you? The pain, or the dying? It's just that, it's not exactly easy to find other people to ask about this, so when I stumbled upon your comment I just wanted to ask if you maybe found the latter to have changed your life, and to then ask why that is, because I still don't know if I'm weird or not for not having it change my life every time it has happened.

I liked both Daniel Jackson's. The one before and the one after Michael Shanks left the show for a short time. In my opinion the character changed quite a bit when he came back to the show.

Here in Los Angeles, U.S., I arrived at E.R. by ambulance vomiting blood (torn esophagus) and was made to go out into the waiting room for an hour. The U.S.’ healthcare is awful.

Some actors just go too far for their roles. They mention that Dr Jackson had appendicitis and the guy has to go and get appendicitis. That's real dedication! (So very glad it turned out OK!)

I can tell you all about appendix problems , it's the only two times I've been in hospital . The problem is that it leads to septicemia if your appendix leaks into body.

Good idea "giving" Danirl the illnees that Michael had, to explain his absence. He's my second favorite cast member after Richard Dean Anderson. Sorry Kurt Russel, but I liked RDA better in the role, and yes, I did see the original movie. I also liked RDA in MacGyver.😊

CT, Ultrasound, MRI or abdominal X-ray are effective (now) in this diagnosis...according to my research. Although, during S3 (1999, 25 years ago), it may not have been as tell-tale and readily available.

i had similar situation with me. i woke up with slight pain in my belly but then day progressed pain got worse and end of day i was in such of pain that i bearly managed to walk home. i was laing in bed all eavning with paracetamol and larer eavning wife called ambulance. and this ambulance was terrible because it was slow as hell and secondly it found probably all speedpumps on the city. In hospital doctor visited me in the morning and next thing i was ln operation table. doc later told me that they got me in last second because when they removed appendix it europted on the the table and not inside me. So yeah, if you feel terrible pain whot is growing go to hospital asap!

It's MUCH easier today. I had appendicitis 2 weeks ago. Drove myself in with abdominal pain. CT scan confirmed it. I was in surgery 2 hours later. Took 25 minutes, and I went home 2 hours later. Only had 3 small incisions because they did laproscopic surgery. I was did have to rest for several days, and couldn't lift anything for 2 weeks. Note: a rupture makes it much more serious though.

In my country, in addition to the history and physical exam, they'd at least get a blood test to see if you have indications of an infection/inflammation, and a urinalysis to rule out an urinary tract infection. But yeah, if that is appendicitis and you "wait til tomorrow", that could rupture and you could die.

When my appendix was doin this, it felt almost exactly like food poisoning, but it kept feeling worse. After a few hours of that, it was time to go to the hospital. They said it didn't look big in the scan and my white blood cell count wasn't "that high" so they injected me with drugs and sent me home. Felt great for a good almost 12 hours, then it started comin back, but even worse. And yea, waiting that long, of course it burst and they had to rinse it out with 10 gallons of water. Moral of the story, you gotta listen to your body when it feels that off, and don't eat Taco Bell. Not worth it at all.
