My first visit to Gatlinburg was back in the 1950s. I can't get over how developed it is now. We stayed in Pigeon Forge's one motel (MacAfee's?) and drove into G'burg for dinner each night. No traffic! You could walk down the middle of the street without a problem. Hope the business recovers and there are no more fatalities.

My family and I are from Upstate SC in the mountains of Northern Greenville County..We have been going to Gatlinburg for 3 generations now since the early 70s. We even owned a place outright on Holly ridge road behind the space needle. I have to say that I am totally disgusted in what Gatlinburg has become over the last 20 years. With the influence of Northern transplants, who have no idea about country life. The place has become a craphole of distilleries, bars, tattoo shops and cheap t-shirt stores. (Decay) Way overpriced and headed toward the likings of Myrtle Beach. We sold after the big fire and haven't been back. But, it's ashame to see China Bizarre gone. I'm 54, and been going in there since my late teens. And yes, that was a McDonald's for many many years.

As a local, there was 4 businesses affected and were complete losses -- "China Bazaar", "Cafe 420", "Pucker's Sports Grill", and "Gifts of Gatlinburg". I worked at the Byrd's Famous Cookies right down the street, next to the Cotton Candy Wine (Seen at 2:12 on the left hand side in the video), and had just been transferred to one of our sister locations (Sevierville) last Monday. My mom works at Ripley's Aquarium (as well as Byrds) at the bottom of the hill and was doing a sleepover on Friday, and woke up Saturday and smelled smoke and found out some of the buildings were on fire up the hill. Devastated that we lost some good businesses, and 1 person has died, but Gatlinburg is good at bouncing back even better, and we will rebuild! Much love to Gatlinburg Fire Dept and Gatlinburg Police for containing it so quickly and keeping everyone safe!

My Mom and I arrived the day of the fire at about 3pm. It took us over an hour just to get down the hill and make the turn onto River Rd. As we drove up River Rd., we saw the back side of the damage and the FD, so we understood why the traffic was so bad. RIP to the man who was lost in it.

I absolutely love Gatlinburg!! I was last there in 2016. 3 of the kids were teens at the time and the youngest was 12. They LOVED it. Every year following that vacation, the kids still would rather go back to Gatlinburg than just about anything else.

As you walked down the street of Gatlinburg, I couldn't help but notice how all the buildings are connected; no alleys or fire walls that I could see! HOW do they think the next fire will be controlled like this one was? The whole town is in risk of burning to the ground (unless there are sprinkler systems in those buildings)!

We were in the building next to the chairlift which is just across the creek from the street that goes behind the Parkway. My wife woke up at 7am, looked out the window and shouted, "There's a fire out there!" We watched it as the firefighters seemed to get it under control in about 1/2 hour. But then it flared up even worse a few minutes later. Thank goodness there was little wind or it might have caught some trees on fire which would have made a path right to us. Can't say how sad we felt when we heard of the death. We certainly hope and pray that his family is comforted.

You're not the only one. I've always considered China Bazaar, Puckers and the old shopping plaza next to it the "heart of Gatlinburg".
