Swede here. What's hilarious about the Sweden Denmark rivalry is that there is this region in southern Sweden that borders Denmark, called Skåne. Throughout history i think this region has been Swedish and Danish like 1000 times respectively atleast. Anyways, since Swedes find Skåne is too danish, there is a group that each year gathers at the Skåne region border, and digs with shovels and pushes away the soil from Sweden trying to effectively create a new border. Its called "Gräv bort Skåne", check it out, shit is hilarious.
@runeallentoft7001Ай бұрын
I mean the tribe Danes did orgininate from Skåne so that's kinda why we want it back Also because of the money flow from owning both sides of the water But all the other European countries have made sure neither Sweden or Denmark ever got to control both sides of the water again as that would affect the economic negative in there countries

In Finland we have a whole ecosystem of memes built around the notion that Finns are Mongols. I think was an old race theory originating from the writings of some 18th and 19th century scholars, and was wide spread during the times. Even Heinrich Himmler, one of the most influential Nazi figures and the leader of SS, thought Finns are mongoloids and as such, not true Aryans (we were granted the status of "honorary aryans" instead - much like you can be an "honorary doctor" without having a real PhD). I think this is quite funny since Finland literally has the most blue eyed and blonde haired people in the world per capita.

It actually originates from Sweden and has gone on longer than you might think. They only recently finally returned stolen Finnish skulls which were measured to try to prove Swedes were geneticaIIy superior to Finns. They measured Finnish-speaking chiIdren's skulls until as far as at least the 1950's. The whole idea of "raciaI hygienics" began in the University Of Uppsala in the 1920's. As far as 2007, Swedish elementary school text books described Finns so disparagingly that Raija Vahasalo of National Coalition made a written query to the government of Sweden.

When I was a recruit in the Swedish military, I met another guy that snused an ENTIRE pack of Siberia a day. 34.4 mg/pouch x 20 pouches/pack = 688mg nicotine/day. We had a survival exercise where we were out in the forest for 10 days, and we were not allowed to bring any external provisions. So we were standing outside in the snow and were strip searched for these provisions, and the guy tried to smuggle in pouches in his uniform. He got caught and was forced to toss it out. 2 days into the exercise, the guy fainted. He was hallucinating, he was sweating, he was genuinely tweaking. So our officers called the medics, and they prescribed him with 50mg nicotine/day. So as the days went on, the rest of us were needing food and water, but this guy just needed his nicotine. It was pretty insane to see.
Regular 1 pack a day Siberia user here, you get used to it. Also working 80 hours a week so the snus might just be copium at this point :))

A notable thing about Denmark's contribution to Ukraine during the war, is that nobody really disagrees with it. It's not a point of contention at all, no political parties oppose it either. I'm sure there are some that disagree with it, but they seem to be a silent minority. I do work with a guy who's family is from Montenegro who inexplicably supports Russia, it might be a Balkan thing or he might just be young and a little naive. Also, Finns might be the champions at drinking but Denmark is #1 in adolescent drinking, and the numbers are wild 59% of 15-16 year olds reported weekly or bi-weekly heavy episodic drinking (binge drinking). I don't know if it's something to be proud of, but clearly our society has not burned down yet, there is still time and much to achieve in that regard. Never let a statistic stop you from achieving your goals, as they say. We're also home to Roskilde Festival, 8 days of debauchery, alcohol and music. Many are 15-16 first time they go. Oh yeah and mountains sounds cool, where do we sign? (Please for the love of god, the Norwegians will not shut up about it).

We have a culture built around it, which stops alot of people from becoming alcoholics, even though research has shown that binge drinking, while still bad for your body has a lower rate of dependency development than day drinking. Those who become alcoholics overwhlemingly drink less but more frequently than someone who binge drinks. It's also not a new thing, parents and grandparents (atleast) drank about as much in percentage of the population, but it was day drinking which created more alcoholics. Trends have changed over time to binge drinking.

2:42 I know this is a meme video, but Denmark and Norway weren't allied. Norway was a part of Denmark, just like Finland was a part of Sweden. The only difference is that historians nowadays refer to the 400 years when Norway was under Denmark as 'Denmark-Norway', while 'Sweden-Finland' is seldom used as a term. Estonia and Latvia were also a part of Sweden up until 1721.
Ай бұрын
Which can make sense - Sweden and Finland, generally same-looking in many ways (lake and forest landscapes) and connected by land, while Denmark and Norway, totally different looking, almost opposites in several ways, and not connected by land. However OTOH the older finnish culture was more "the odd one out" while Denmark-Norway has always been "compatible cultures despite smaller differences."
@Nobody-NowhereАй бұрын
Finland was populated from the east, while Nordic countries were populated from the south through Denmark. This can also be seen in Finland's current genetics; we have a huge divide between the east & west. Two totally different populations. Finland was also apparently populated much later than Sweden for example.
@SebHaarfagreАй бұрын
I think you are confused as to how a union worked between two constitutional monarchies but I guess that is not your point
@gustav331Ай бұрын
@@SebHaarfagre The so-called entity "Denmark-Norway" was not a constitutional monarchy. It was an absolutist one - the most absolute monarchy in all of Europe from 1660 onwards. True, it had an absolutist constitution, but that is not what I presume you mean when you say 'constitutional monarchy'. The term "Denmark-Norway" is itself anachronistic, and gives the impression of the country being a dual state like Austria-Hungary. That was the impression that the term was meant to give when Danish historian Edvard Holm invented it in 1869. He wanted the Norwegians to look more fondly upon the time of the Dano-Norwegian union. In reality, however, "Denmark-Norway" was known by contemporaries as just Denmark or "the Danish Crown". Sometimes it would also be called "The Twin Realms". Norway was not an independent country in union with Denmark. Norway still existed titularly, and there were some separate laws in the two countries, but Norway was ruled from Copenhagen. The Norwegian Riksråd had been abolished in 1537, and rule of the country had been exercised from Copenhagen since that time. The governor-general was likewise an appointment that the King in Copenhagen made, and that post was likewise always held by a Dane.

Ironically, its also when Finland as a nation was born. Tsar Alexander I announced that “Finland had been raised to the status of a nation among nations”. Its kind of interesting tha tour language did not even have a word for a state. "It was not until 1848 that the Finnish term for state, valtio, was first introduced." And still Finns keep hating Russia, they literally liberated us, made us into a nation and eventually Lenin gave us independency.
@AivottajaАй бұрын
@@Nobody-Nowhere That's the result of centuries of colonization.
@jokemon9547Ай бұрын
@@Nobody-Nowhere Finnish not having the modern word for a modern state in "valtio" before 1846 is true, however words like "valtakunta" meaning "kingdom" or "realm" and more vaguely just a state in general have existed for a long time. Also, the Finnish nationalism that formed under Russia in the 19th century did have its origins in the "fennomania" of the 18th century, it didn't just pop up under Russia nor did Russia create it, Russia simply promoted it more as a political move to sway Finland away from going back to Sweden. And for centuries before that, it was always understood that the eastern half of Sweden and the people living there were "different". Lenin didn't give Finland independence out of the kindness of his heart, saying it as "Lenin just gave independence" makes it seem like that. In reality Finland had already declared independence and there was not anything Lenin could realistically do about it at the time. And that is why Lenin and the Bolsheviks went on to send aid to the Finnish Red Guards during the civil war, indirectly attempting Finland either to come to their sphere or to become a part of a Bolshevik Russia even if the latter may have been less supported among the Finnish Reds.

When Norway is mentioned there is always talk about how rich and great it is. But people forget the crimes they did to their own people that they saw as unworthy people. We're talking about mesuring skulls, taking children away to forced schools to make them more norwegian. In 1982 they wanted to build a dam that was gonna flood an entire village, but the government just thought "they will have to move." So there was a protest and a hunger strike. It resulted in the biggest police action in Norway since world war 2.

Bear in mind Finland was largely a part of Sweden for 300-700 years depending on the region. So no, Sweden was not alone and Hakkapeliittas proved their importance in the battlefield especially during the 30 Years' War. After the end of the Swedish Empire (Treaty of Uusikaupunki A.K.A Uudenkaupungin rauha 1721) Sweden became quite mediocre in waging war, eventually fighting the last one against, you guessed it, (Denmark-)Norway in 1814. Basically Denmark didn't rule over Norway anymore since the treaty of Kiel earlier that year, but their ruler was a dane, who later became the king of Denmark, so yeah. But basically Sweden conceded territories after 1721 also in 1743 (Treaty of Turku, Turun rauha) and 1809 (Treaty of Hamina, Haminan rauha) in between which there was also the war of Gustav III ending in The treaty of Värälä, Värälän rauha (1790, status quo ante bellum). And no, Sweden basically was not alone in many of the wars it fought. Instead, it was Sweden-Finland who was alone in many of the conflicts it faced.

I agree with the Nordic prison system when it comes to countries that don't have issues with mass gang violence. Mass arresting people even just for having a tattoo or being related to a gang member is not law and order. The failures of the state don't justify dictatorship. Åland is part of the Finnish Archipelago and separated from the Swedish mainland by deep sea (by Baltic Sea standards). This makes it geographically part of Finland, not Sweden. I also must mention. Nordics are just Slavic Balkan but cold and civilized. Hear me out. Tall nations that speak similar languages, hating each other for centuries for stupid reasons, eat things like frikadeller (we call it Kyufte in the Balkans, which is a Turkish word but the dish is pork so it is not a Turkish dish), Flæskesvær (djumerki or prazhki is the Balkan name), skyr(yogurt). Eating a lot of pork, selling pork lard in the stores, having raw onions in their dishes, making things like Pariserbøf(Princesa sandwich in Bulgaria, but lacks the raw egg and the pickled things). Having horseradish in stores. Etc.

@@Exxperiment626 also it is quite debatable, Denmark was one of the biggest producers of PDF-file videos legally (color climax corporation) and zoo-file videos. In Balkans we didn't have that. We all have dark periods in our history, just the Balkan dark ages are now.
