I never took the Gatwick Express, but I took the Heathrow Express many times. It's First Class is much nicer, and there are newspapers available, including The Financial Times! I loved the fact that the old hotel in Paddington Station had been renovated, beautifully! It was managed by Hilton when I was using it. I really liked the pub at the top of the escalator leading to the hotel. I would always stop in for a pint or two of London Pride, awesome after a long international flight.

Hi. I live on the Kent/Sussex border. I went on the GX just recently. Firstly, its not a premium train per se. My standard second class ticket from Haywards Heath to Brighton was valid on the GX. Yes the train is fairly standard, and somewhat dated. It's advantage is speed. It has very limited stops. It is frequent. But at the end of the day it is a standard commuter train, on a very very busy commuter line. Horses for courses. I use the Hitachi Javelin quite a lot, and that is a premium service from Ashford to St Pancras. It's again a commuter train with no first class. But it travels at 225km/h, and you pay a premium for speed. It's basic but does the job admirably.

Very interesting video. Nice to see the interior of the station and the train!

I think GX is one of the better trains there is with carport interiors, reading lamps, tables, coat hooks, plugs and ample legroom at every seat.

Wow 5:30am you were very early there at Earls Court! How come so early ? The best thing about Gatwick Express is you don’t have to share with passengers loading & unloading at Clapham Junction and East Croydon. You get a sense of privilege passing through these stations without stopping😂 because it’s actually so rare in the timetable.

I used to drive express buses for Reading Transport X1 service into Victoria many years ago and would always have to wait to get on our stand (stop) to load it was that busy. I wouldn't say the GX was a premium service, just a normal semi fast train. What Town in Holland are you from. We love Leiden

Agree, it's a great commuter train or a bad premium product, just how you look at it. I'm from The Hague, not that far from Leiden (and I agree, Leiden is great).

I've spent many a time in both Victoria Bus / Coach, and Train stations, despite coming from near East Midlands Airport on the Nottingham / Derbyshire / Leicestershire border, and know these Electrostar units well. Just to your right, you see a Southern railway service, which is a cheaper way to get to Brighton, sometimes you may have to combine a Thameslink service, though Thames you can get directly from St Pancras International (From the basement Thameslink Platforms), changing at either East Croydon, or Horsham, or sometimes even Gatwick..... Southern used to have the Diesel variant (Called Turbostar, all made by ABB, which became Bombardier, made in my home town Derby) of that Electrostar you was on, with those recently transferred to an operator which runs in my area, called East Midlands Railway (EMR - runs from St Pancras International, north to Corby, Nottingham, Derby, and Sheffield). All Electrostars and Turbostars never had or was intended to have any buffet bar service for food etc, however a number of operators (Cross Country especially on the Cardiff - Nottingham route) opted for a trolley service of snacks and light refreshments.

A note for anyone traveling in the UK, unless you are like me and know the UK rail network very well or have something like an Inter Rail etc pass, your cheapest option for tickets, is via a trick called "Split Ticketing" (Two or more tickets which covers your full intended journey, yet you quite often don't have to change trains!), with some specialist sites like Trainsplit and Raileasy do automatically for you, in exchange for a small cut of any savings gained..... google for "split train tickets uk" and you will see a number of options, some which will explain more what this actually is.

Hi. Thanks for this. I enjoy your videos. But one very small correction that I can't resist making (sorry). The name 'Thames' is pronounced 'Temes'. The 'h' is silent and 'Thames' rhymes with 'gems'. I am very aware in saying this that 1/ your English is infinitely better than my Dutch, and 2/ pronunciation in English (especially names) can be hugely at odds with spelling. Keep up the good work.
