Yay the S130 :D one of the most iconic and versitile trains in the Renfe fleet. The Euromed service entered in 1997 with a S101 series (a Iberian version of the S100). The S130 you got is verry lucky its had the NEW renfe Interior the old Interior had Grande Lineas color (Greenish blue many poeople say it gives Hospital vibes). Fun fact of this is a bit older than you think well the coche which are Talgo VII sets. These sets where build in 1999 and they did Altaria services (loco HS day services) until 2006-2007 where Renfe and Talgo had the idea of having more EMU with gauge chaching capility. For that they use the Talgo VII sets and add power cars and ask Ariño[ the company that did the power cars you can see their logo on the windows (: ] Some S130 where build from nothing (Power cars +coaches) in 2007. How you can tell the diference now with the Interior? At 18:32 you can see the Grande Lineas logo and colors. 2007 sets on the other hand had on its monitors the Renfe purple colours and with a piture of the S130 in the backround. The S130 are the train in charge of Spain longest routes I hope you migth be instreted on these routes in the future (:

I find Barcelona Sants gets really unpleasant when it's crowded (which you fortunately didn't experience). It's like the worst excesses of an airport, because you have to queue up for security and then queue up again before going to the platform. The station obviously wasn't designed for the way it's run. Queues often intertwine (the line for the coffee shop post-security often is the same as the one for the adjacent platform!), so you're never quite sure you're in the right line.

I have to agree, it’s not my favourite railway station and it hasn’t been designed for the current usage. I’ve think it’s nice it’s been build underground however there’s not really enough room to expand. I’ve heard that there are pans to make a new station or to expand it. Railway stations shouldn’t be designed like airports. I personally don’t find it unpleasant but there are definitely some practical things that can (/need) to be improved.

As always very informative. A few things to add. First of all, Ave and long distance train operated by Renfe and Iryo includes free rides on tje local regional service (Rodalies in Catalunya. Cercanías in most otjer places, Feve (narrow gauge service) and Alicante tram system. You can use it to get to/from tje train station at the origin and destination. You can use it up to 4h before daparture and after arrival. That leads to the second thing. The regional trains can be the best option to get tothe main train station in quite a few cases. In Barcelona it's easy to do from Pl. catalunya, Passeig de Gràcia and othere city stattions. As for Barcelona Sants. It was opened in 1975 and suits that age. It had a few renovations and it's about romstart a huge one next year that will make it much nicer. A segond main station is under construction on the other side of the city (La Sagrera) and should open in acouple of years. It will also be served by the high speed trains. As for the ride itself. The Mediterranean corridor is nearing completion so the connection for this ride will be fully high speed (probably 2027/8). As for the gauge, you didn't show the gauge changing process. There are some high speed lines that use Inerian gauge and now the Avril trains can reach 300 km/h on those as well as beforenthat it was max 250 km/h. I know that those trains had a rough start but they've managed to solve almost all problems (certainly the main ones). They are also adding more two gauge tracks that can be used by both Iberian and standard trains.

@@Trainviking Basque Country is not an easy place to build rail lines, and definatelly not high speed. The new high speed line serving this area is finally nearing completions and should open in 2027. It is Y shaped connecting all three main cities (Bilbao. Vitoria and San Sebastian/Donostia). This will provide high speed connection between those cities and a high speed connection into France (they have no immediate plans to finish tje high speed connection on their side). The connection to the rest of the network will be throgh a high speed line between Vitoria and Burgos. It's an 86.5 km line, construction is due to start in a few months and shoul be finished in 2030. Until than trains will use the conventional line to connect to the high speed line in Burgos. Also, since the Basque government desided to completely rebuld the train station in Bilbao moving platforms and all tracks leading to it undrground, which will take years, a temporary station will be built.

it is by no means Scotland's least scenic rail journey. That "honour" probably goes to one of the routes in Glasgow, maybe the route to Maryhill via Possilpark, although I guess the extension via Kelvindale does straddle Dawsholm woods. and the River Kelvin. Also the Edinburgh via Falkirk route has its moments. You probably wont see them for long but Bishopbrigs and Lenzie are quite nice towns and you might catch a view of the Campsie hills. Unfortunately the Strathkelvin railway that takes you there was closed. Around and after Croy are remnants of the Roman Antonine Wall which is a scenic route, although you don't see it all from the train there are some nice spots there. Going into Flakirk you might be able to spot the Wheel, although the other line in Falkirk takes you closer. Polmont doesn't have the nicest views but coming into Linlithgow you go over a wonderful viaduct and can see the Avon Lagoon. Near the station you get a nice view of Linlithgow Palace. Coming into Edinburgh you see Murrayfield, parts of the West End and of course the Castle. While not the best journey, I would actually put this well above average as train journeys go.

It is the station where three german lines and one swiss line meet. The station area is german customs area, so passengers can change trains between the german lines without passing customs. * When the station was built, there existed no Federal Republik of Germany but the Grand-duchy of Baden. the really sustainable way to go however is Ferries... especially sailing ships. have you ever considered trying to find a way onto one of these? I know for a fact there are occasional ticketed sail-ships between Morocco and the UK, not sure about other parts of Europe. I mean, you would not be carbon zero, since you do Motor-sail for a short distance around the harbor, and possibly some part of the distance is on mixed power if the wind is lower, but that's still a quarter or less of the impact of an average train journey of thesame distance.
@Trainviking12 күн бұрын
Agree ferries are in general a very sustainable way of transport. Not like a cruise (people often see this as the same thing). I noticed one ferry between the UK and France with real sailing ships, I love to take that as well. On ferries the number of pollution is pretty often very mixed, because they also take goods (trucks, etc) and that’s maybe the most important part for ferries you can get very different outcomes for polition. I actually want to make a kind of a documentary series about this where I go more in depth on this topic. I want to use examples on different parts of the world, like for example my girlfriend is from Taiwan. It’s a small country where east and west are divided by a big mountain range, so in a way I understand short haul flights on some routes. However there are many flights to small islands around Taiwan where you also find ferries. I like to know the differences for the environment on those routes. Another example, this is not a ferry but an ocean liner, between Europe and America there’s an ocean liner. Great experience however that one only takes passengers and the pollution is therefore twice per passenger compared to flying. It’s a very interesting topic where there’s not a lot of general knowledge about and you can’t say 1 on 1 that ferries are more sustainable either.
@stanislavkostarnov215712 күн бұрын
@@Trainviking a ferry would have to be very empty and be used very inefficiently to become worse than a plane on energy use, however, yes, these machines travel through a delicate biosphere that is the ocean environment, it has many ways to pollute in ways that are not directly propulsion related (or at least nothing to do with the energy consumption) and also ships can be rather old... they do not have thesame pollution control measures as we do on modern airplanes or cars(same can be true with some older trains in some parts of the world, though this to a lesser degree)
@stanislavkostarnov215712 күн бұрын
@@Trainviking Trans-Atlantic, I would actually recommend using a passenger carrying container ship, Maersk used to allow a few passengers on many of their ships... not a 5-star experience to be sure, but it is quicker and cheaper than taking a cruise-ship like ocean-liner if you want to try the route...
@stanislavkostarnov215713 күн бұрын
the thing an airplane does do is allow two distant locations to become one in terms of the ability of a person to work in both... this can be achieved with HSR but not really with medium speed trains (the distance you can go for a "daytrip" vs the distance you need a few days stay) - efficient cheap capsule-hotel style sleepers also help with this, if you can really get a good sleep and arrive somewhere in the early morning then return to the station late at night sleep on the train and be fresh for whatever you do at home, that really is better than an airplane in many ways. I used sleeper trains a lot in Asia, and am glad to see they are coming back into fashion in cross-European trips. really need that kind of service in our lives!
@Trainviking12 күн бұрын
It’s true that sometimes the distance and slow trains make people choose for the plane, by having a girlfriend originally from Taiwan I fully understand and I choose to fly as well (although I’ve been to China in the past by train). I think it’s not always bad to fly, but we should really think before we board a plane. It’s like alcohol. I love a good glass of wine, but I don’t want to be drunk every weekend.
@stanislavkostarnov215713 күн бұрын
on longer distance low traffic route, if you consider the impact of construction and sustaining a railway and the energy generation/loss for wiring in electric railways, an airplane can become comparatively sustainable (even though I still would prefer a train if I have the time for it)...
@Trainviking12 күн бұрын
I did research on this and actually that’s nog quite true. On longer distance the airplane takes more weight for fuel so especially the first section of the route is using more energy. What is a thing for flying is that pollution on a higher altitude (this is already the case if you travel by car in the mountains) causes more environmental damage than on a lower altitude (on the other hand, less air resistance so flying high makes more sense eventually I guess). If planes will slow down a bit, this makes a BIG impact for long haul flights, this way ticket prices can be a bit lower and airlines can also make a bit more profit (only winners I guess). It’s an interesting topic for sure.
@stanislavkostarnov215712 күн бұрын
@@Trainviking longer distance is definitely more efficient than short haul flights, or at least should be unless you do something very wrong... what I meant is, there are even some shorter haul routes where a plane can be more efficient, in very specific circumstances... basically, to take a route which either only needs to take less then 50 people a day, or maybe a few hundred people a day but at a frequency meaning you need to carry only a couple of dozen people at a time if there is no sane way to make these two locations part of train lines linking other destinations, the ecological impact and cost to just connect two such communities would be prohibitive, however, an airplane can provide a link which due to still carrying a reasonable density of people for it's size, may operate with considerable efficiency (obviously, a bus might cost less, but the discomfort of that mode of transport should keep it out of the game, since it's not an equal category of travel modes as a train or airplane, and it still has a very significant ecological impact)

Frquencies along the north flank of Spain is so BAD. From San Sebastian to the south ( via Vitoria, Burgos Valladolid to Madrid and elsewhere) are 5 trains per day ! For Bilbao to Vitoria (and Pamplona to Barcelona?🤔) you have to make a rransfer in middle of nowhere Miranda de Ebro and wait for like 1-3 hrs due the low frequencies ! 😱 And those sizeable cities are like at 80-140km distance in between. Ideal for fast intrcity service. There is no justification for such low frequency ! But unfortunately in Spain everything is focused on Madrid..
@Trainviking15 күн бұрын
I totally agree, the frequencies are BAD and everything is based on Madrid. By having Madrid in more or less the centre of the country I kind of understand and Spain has a geographical challenge with HUGE peaces of land with almost nobody living there (the least dence populated areas in Europe) and some parts of the country that are very dense populated. Therefore Spain really needs more intercity services, direct trains, etc.
@osasunaitor7 күн бұрын
The northern part of Spain has a very challenging geography, and railways are scarce. This, coupled with a sheer lack of trains (and bad conditions of the few ones we have) that prevents better frequencies and reliability, makes travelling by train quite complicated and unpleasant, and makes buses the only alternative. From Bilbao to Pamplona, for instance, you have frequent direct buses that take just 2h for less than 10€. It's the same in the whole northern area, with Bilbao-Santander being perhaps the most striking case: two important cities connected with just 1 direct train PER DAY (Renfe Feve) that takes well over 3h through remote and poorly maintained narrow gauge railways and is often cancelled due to malfunctions, meanwhile there are direct Alsa buses every hour covering the distance in less than 1h30 via motorway. It's all a big shame, but the trains are not an option here.
