I take this train every day to Maastricht and then with NS up to Eindhoven. The worst part is that I have to run out at Eijsden to check in with my OV card to get the off peak prices, really wish they let you travel all the way from/to Liège with the card like in the bus to Aachen.

Loved watching the video and reminiscing. I first experienced the DB's ICE 1 about 30 years ago; what a thrill! Back in 2010 on a group trip to Paris we stayed at what was arguably the worst rundown hotel in the world, the Hotel Sibour, only two minutes from Gare de l'Est, on Rue Sibour in Paris 10e. Fortunately, that hotel is now the Ibis Styles Gare de l'Est Magenta, which looks like night and day from what it used to be. While I don't know how I ever managed to survive the old Sibour, I would totally try staying at the current Ibis. And since I love both Paris and Berlin, I can't wait to take a direct train from one to the other! 😀
@Trainviking12 сағат бұрын
Haha hotel Sibour…, I know that place. They actually closed now (oh I wrote this while haven’t read everything yet, you also mentioned this). I worked for a company selling railway package deals all over Europe and for that hotel we had a kind of a fixed contract for really good rates. I never stayed there myself though. I worked for that company from 2015 until 2020 (when all staff was fired due to covid), now I’m working for a competitor. However there it was more interesting, even though salary wasn’t that great, the workload was super high I really enjoyed my time there, I guess I’m one of the few people who knows about pretty much all European booking systems, what ways to split up tickets, etc. knowledge that is useful but not something to make a stable income with. The thing for train travel is, if you sell package deals you can make a better profit, just regular tickets you earn if you’re lucky 3% (some parts maybe 10%) and the booking fee, if you make a simple mistake you can even loose money because of non-refundable tickets and people always start arguing the booking fee. Okay I shouldn’t write a bio here. But the old ICE trains were actually pretty cool indeed. I’m old enough to have experienced that on my first trip by train in Germany. Anyway this connection is indeed absolutely worth trying.

@Trainviking12 сағат бұрын
Really? I can imagine it’s pricy to do so indeed, not just building it but also the maintenance, on the other hand it’s on such an important railway line, that I think it’s worth the money.

The problem is in the UK the flights only costs 1/3rd of a train ticket, frequently even less. And journey only 1 1/2 hr to get to Scotland from London,
@Trainviking12 сағат бұрын
I think this is something that should be fixed as well. Tax the flights more and use that money for the railways. Especially domestic flights within Great Britain (I’m talking about the main island) are not needed and need to be taxed in a way that the train is always cheaper. Also prices for trains can be better, on the popular hours and days it can be really pricey.

Tip: your 1st class ticket between France and Germany gives you access to the (particularly underwhelming) "salon grand voyageur" in Paris Est (but not to the DB lounges in Germany).

ICE Portal is so underrated. I don't understand how DB does not advertise it more. It's AAA Movies and shows available to stream for free and stored locally in the train and shared via Wifi. So it's not like you'd be depending on the quality of the mobile signal for the train. So for me at least it has always been super stable in FHD.
@Trainviking4 күн бұрын
Totally agree, same thing for the SNCF their trains though. Some other companies have this ass well, but DB is definitely best on this topic.

nice cat video 🙂 BTW, wouldnt only folks from Norway qualify as “Viking” ? Based on your impression, do most passengers only travel partway, or would most do Paris Berlin ? Curious what would be the busiest city pairs? Curious if the reservation engines reserve a certain portion of seats for Paris Berlin such that the train isn't filled with passenters doing Paris Strasbourg and those wanting Paris Berlin are told no seats left and train travels empty afterwards.
@Trainviking4 күн бұрын
Actually during my ride, most people went all the way, but of course some people just did a small part of the route. Of all passengers on board, I guess 40% did the entire ride. Also I made this journey in super low season, so it’s not that busy when I made this journey.
@jfmezei4 күн бұрын
@@Trainviking Super low season is good because you are getting "real" travellers, not tourists. When evaluating routes, airlines for instance will consider the low season demand to see if it justifies the aircraft/crews.

First of all Trainline makes everything more viable, I had this several times that I didn’t knew about other companies. Trainline makes it easy for most people because 2 systems are at the back of the system for those route. Of course, planning and comparing is fun, but most people just want to get from A to B. Because I really believe in Trainline I have since recently also an affiliate link, however I do have to say, if I don’t believe in a product I won’t promote it (in many of my older videos where I’m not an affiliate yet, I also mention Trainline).
@slasherfun4 күн бұрын
SNCF Voyageurs doesn't sell tickets online themselves, they only rely on third-party travel agencies (SNCF Connect, unlike what its name might suggest, being one of them). Particularly on routes between France and Germany co-operated by SNCF and DB, both companies will sell tickets for the exact same trains at different prices: Trainline (and probably other travel agencies, but definitely not SNCF Connect) will automatically offer the cheapest option between the two.

Oohhh I didn’t know that. To be honest, if we would have had more time I might have considered a day trip to Helsinki as well trying the other ferries. In terms of sustainability I think Viking Line might actually do a better job (at least they publish it on their website). This is a topic I really care about, sustainability doesn’t only mean pollution but also giving good job opportunities to local people, etc. Well I’d love to go back to Finland also try the Finnlines ferry between Germany and Helsinki…. There’s so much I like to cover haha. Too many plans (and for now I have weekly videos until mid May, so I should take it easy now unless I have some opportunities I haven’t planned, there might be something for that as well).

It's one trip I want to do with Tallink-Silja line, from Stockholm to Helsingfors, then the nightferry to Tallinn, from Tallinn back to Stockholm with that ferry. I've take the ferry from Stockholm to Tallinn twice, from Stockholm to Finland countless times also with Viking linie. It was a ferry from Stockholm to Riga but that ferry is cancelled now since the pandemic and the war in Ukraina, many people from Russia used to take that trip.
@Trainviking9 күн бұрын
I think there are indeed many many many great connections by ferry on the Baltic Sea. And the war with Ukraine only knows people losing something, even for Russians it’s a big step backwards (and don’t forget, they are also just people).
