The Berlin FIDE Grand Prix is the 16-player first of three legs of the 24-player 2022 FIDE Grand Prix that qualifies two players to the Candidates Tournament. Each player competes in two of the three tournaments, with the 16 players divided into four groups who play a double round-robin. The group winners advance to a knockout. Tiebreaks at any stage are played on the following day. Players can earn a maximum of 13 points for winning a leg.
Players receive 90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes to the end of the game, plus a 30-second increment starting from move one. In case of a tie a 15+10 two-game match is played. If still tied, a 3+2 two-game match follows and then, if needed, an Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4, but a draw counts as a win for Black. If more than two players are tied a round-robin tiebreak is played. Official website: worldchess.com

I might be missing something here but at 3:09 after bishop takes queen, why not go Knight C7 check first (Knight is defended), force black to move the king. Then proceed to take queen. Now black cannot move both his bishop and rook out of harmsway and your rook still safely gaurds the knight from king.

seems like there was precisely one moment when the king had to boldly step into the check, perform an exchange sacrifice and continue playing actively - once that moment passed it was all about black backing down and taking the punches from white just to prolong the eventual apocalypse. now tell me if chess doesn't resemble life!

@mattr791

There is a ton of theory and really neat complex variations but very simply After black takes on b2 white offers a queen trade leaving black with 3 options 1) trade queens 2) take the knight then Bd2 blocks and attacks the queen Qa3 is the only safe square for the queen but Qxb7 and white will win the rook and black resigns 3) take the c2 pawn but Qb5+ Nc6 then Rc1!! blacks queen is trapped

If Black tries to exchange off the White Knight on d6 with 24...Nc8, at 9:28, Arturs Neiksans on Chess24 gave the nice variation 25. Rb4, R:b4, 26. R:c8+, Kd7 27. R:h8. So Black has to decline exchanging Knights with 25...Nb6 leaving White with a long-term advantage with the d6-Knight.

after Qxb2 and Qb1, can't black take either the knight or the pawn to win another piece? like why would black just trade queens? for example if black Qxc3 check and then white Bd2 to block, then white could take the c2 pawn and trade queens or so on. or just go for the pawn immediately and skip the knight? i'm sure i'm missing something just can't find it

After Bd2 attacking the queen, only square available is a3 and after Qxb7 the black rook will fall
@TheWolfnman
@TheWolfnman 2 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same, but if you take the knight, bishop b2 basically traps the queen. And if you take the pawn on c2, you get into an annoying line with queen b5 check, which I have no idea how to calculate - but engine says it's winning for white. So trading queen would be the best move.
@manuelmed98
@manuelmed98 2 жыл бұрын
I was confused too. Turns out after the black Q captures the c2 pawn, white shouldn't trade queens but instead go Qxb7. Black doesn't have any useful move to protect the rook or threaten the white side immediately, so the black rook will be captured

At 1:15, what's stopping black from simply capturing the knight? White has no compensation as capturing the pawn on b7 would result in the rook on a1 going down with check
@fp323
@fp323 2 жыл бұрын
when the knight is captured you block with bishop, queen has to go to a3 and then b7 and rook on a8 are falling edit: you can trade queen for rook, knight and bishop but that's also losing
