Also, theory. What if only young dragons are to compete for the title of Dragon Lord? It's possible that the dragon lord must step down at a certain age, and most Wyrms are too old to have a long reign, so the wyrmlings and adolescents are the ones sent to fight in order to keep the reign long.

I actually have a theory about why only younger dragons participate. I think the reasoning behind it is that the dragon lord is expected to rule for many years, So long that a dragon will spend most of it's life as dragon lord. Only younger dragons can participate since the older larger dragons we have seen before would die before their rule ends.
@MissPonsy8 жыл бұрын
Agree 👍
@PuppyBeBad8 жыл бұрын
I got to agree with that theory. It also makes sense why the scepter is so small yet appears to be a powerful magical artifact. It's meant for use for when the dragons are younger, maybe to give them extra power until they grow into their own
@heatherkramer31398 жыл бұрын
This was what I was thinking. Long steady rule by a single individual which is then passed on to another as that one reaches a certain age. I like that it also allows for a bit of a transitional period where the new dragon lord can be mentored and supported by the old and being younger is likely more open to it than an adult dragon.

Actually, I thought Garble WAS fleshed out, albeit in subtle and indirect ways. We learn more about him by learning more about his world. For one thing, he seemed to be demonstrably a product of his environment, especially having presumably grown up with Ember's father as a role model. Think about it... Torch is constantly yelling at people, telling them directly what to do or say in relation to him. This is echoed in Garble pointing out what he did or didn't say... "I didn't say it was nice to see you! Wasn't I clear!? I didn't say thank you!" As such, he can be interpreted as a symptom of the nature of dragon society thus far. He embodies the threat of a young generation inheriting the worst qualities of the previous one instead of challenging them, carrying the bluster of a young pistol eager to prove himself to his elders. He's following the "torch" which has guided dragons in the past, whereas Spike and the princess represent the "ember" of hope for change, a small flame in danger of going out, but which can be fanned to grow. Heh, I'm not sure if that was intentional on the part of the writers when they named them, but it's a cute analogy all the same. Also, his potential is demonstrated by the fact that he's the only dragon who nearly makes it to the end of the challenge on his own. This shows surprising determination and strength, especially with all the setbacks he endures. For all his faults, he clearly does have certain leadership qualities, evidenced by his little gang. Thus, when he's ordered to go around hugging anyone he meets, it carries a little more weight... this isn't just some random bully being forced into a humiliating punishment. It's someone that other dragons might look up to having to set a new example. Yes, he's doing so under protest, but he doesn't seem to be the sort of person who challenges society's rules. He's played by them so far, and now he'll have to live with new standards, a new torch to follow... as will all the dragons.
@JoeEnglandShow8 жыл бұрын
***** That's the thing... I don't see him as evil, I see him as young (and not particularly bright). He has the enthusiasm of an idealistic soldier who's never actually seen combat but grew up in a society which encourages aggression. He dreams of glory in the trenches, of being a hero for his people, of destroying "the enemy." He's not a mature, machiavellian sociopath who's aware of what he's doing and simply doesn't care. He's just a young punk who's got a lot of growing up to do. At least, that's my take on him. If he's still the same guy after his acne clears up, then I'll be less forgiving.

We do learn a bit more about dragon culture by inference in this episode. The Bloodstone Scepter is made for a younger dragon's claw not an adult dragon's and possesses some definite magic power. There is also a great deal of armor to be found on the dragons which indicates they do have blacksmiths and craft making and are not simply intelligent beasts. We also see a great deal of resentment and perhaps envy of the luxuries possessed by ponies. Torch himself seems a rather reasonable dragon despite his focus on strength and size.

@shadowwriter45388 жыл бұрын
Maybe the other adult dragons competed a long time ago with Torch and they lost, so they couldn't compete in this; also this is for the younger generation and not the older. Also, those other dragons only came for the migration and we can assume that they come from other lands other than Equestria. Another thing to take into account is the adult dragons might have their own lord too and answer to him/her. Overall, it is the stuff you just said, but I added more to it
@ZGuy0fSci8 жыл бұрын
That was kinda my first thought too, that the 'passing of the staff' is only to the younger crowd by the older one as the older folk have 'had their time.' As for the seeming smallish number of competitors, perhaps again that part of "The Dragons of Equestria" such that as we know there ARE more lands than the one, even the Pony tribes coming prior from outside.

I think the reason why the Dragon Lord contacted younger dragons is mostly because he would want the next Dragon Lord to be there as long as possible. darkflame728 Yeah, it doesn't have to be all magical girl like when Twilight became a princess, but just a hint. Personally i was hoping spike would have his own connection to the map since he does have his own thrown. But sort of to track down rare elemental baby dragons that are keys to finding out about their origins. Using his flame as not only the marker of where to search but maybe even as a timer that indicates the life force of the rare dragons yet to hatch. As they would need to be located and awakened before it went out.It would be great for a season long arch but i doubt the fandom would be willing to endure one full season of spike centric episodes.However maybe the glowing scales could be incorporated if the idea seems like something the fandom could support.

Well, it did give us a little insight into Dragon culture, but I would have been more impressed if this dove more into Spike's origins of where he actually came from. Like, introducing his mother or father, or both, and explaining how he came to be in the possession of ponies in Canterlot.

+Triskelion well you have to be reminded that this is suppose to center around Ember and Spike. and she was fast enough to save Twilight and Rarity before Twilight could do anything. and she wanted to still be there to support Spike. plus Ember did say she would take care of Garble while Spike went to go get the staff.

Being rather fond of dragons to begin with, I loved the inclusion of this lore. I think there is a great deal of potential here, and I get the impression they're building to something. I can't say for certain, but I expect we haven't heard the last of dragons this season. If nothing else, it would make the Guardians of Harmony line make a little more sense (yeah, that's a fool's notion, if a fun one). One aspect I thoroughly enjoyed is the fact that there were no recolor dragons (that I saw). Every dragon was unique. No blue Garbles, no violet Embers. It shows a dedication that the show has been doing better on of late. Compared to season 1's "dozen clones of 5 ponies" crowd scenes, at least.
@buildingblock15188 жыл бұрын
I have a theory that might answer why the adult dragons didn't participate. They probably took part in the previous gauntlet which Torch won, and are roughly the same age as him. The dragons would need someone from the younger generations to be their new lord, because if they put someone who's just as old Torch in charge now, the rein would only last a few decades before the lord kicks the bucket

Spike wanted to become dragon lord to stop the dragons from attacking Equestria. Garble even said he planned as lord to take whatever he wanted in raids in equestria and burn the rest. What if the ashland timeline was result of a new dragon lord doing that very thing and burned Equestria to the ground with repeated raids. Favorite Spike episode to date! The conflict was NOT due to Spike's own mistakes! Also, DRWolf001 I agree that it is awesome how Spike has no interest in competing until he became worried for the safety of the ponies that didn't come down to guilting from his friends. The whole time he shows that he has no desire to be in charge but that he is trying to keep up his own ideal of his own "Dragon Code" (see that episode most fans hate that I still don't understand why really). Also the portrayal of Ember as the ideal that you don't have to be "big and Tough" to be strong. Very strong episode and hope that this kind of character writing will continue. Really appreciate your views and your willingness and courage to share those ideas with us. Thanks Doc!

Perhaps Equestria is something of a nursery for dragons. The young ones, unpleasant as they are, have a place to grow up apart from the other adult dragons, who might kill them, to protect their hordes. When they grow up, they have to go, perhaps ordered out by the dragon lord. This would explain why the dragon in "Dragonshy" was such a surprise, as was the other one in "Owl's Well That Ends Well." Of course that doesn't explain why Spike doesn't have wings, unless he's a different species of dragon. After all, he is physically quite different from the other dragons even wings aside. As for a major threat in the future, I've often wondered if Tartarus wasn't just a prison for the really bad things of Equestria, but that that entrance was a portal to the layer of Hell call of the same name. Perhaps the goodness and cuteness of Equestria serves to strengthen a seal deeper down in the prison that blocks the way to a place far worse. If that seal were to fail, there probably isn't much the ponies could go on their own against that.
@forestgrump47238 жыл бұрын
+Thane36425 It could even be that Celestia has them removed at adulthood because they are a nuisance to ponies.
@Thane364258 жыл бұрын
Yes. I was thinking that there could be some kind of agreement between Celestia and the Dragon Lord to that effect. Where they go afterward, how many survive adulthood, how fast they age, and how often they reproduce, are still a mystery. Most fantasy states dragons can live a thousand years or more (though some set it much at much less) and reproduction is very low. As I recall, there were a lot of dragons flying over in "Dragon Quest." Hopefully that is for the entire planet because it is hard to imagine that Equestria would be Equestria with that many dragons in it. They all also seemed to be older with few young dragons, as there were in this episode, so many there aren't many new in each generation and/or there is high mortality among them. The adults seemed hostile as well. It will be interesting to see how they go with this.

This is the kind of Spike episode that I have been wanting to see for years. Ever since that first Spike episode, their formula has been: Spike causes chaos, everyone else has to clean it up, Spike learns lesson. This time Spike is not the problem in the slightest but he is the one to immediately step up to neutralize the threat.
@Argonova8 жыл бұрын
Spike has now had direct exposure to every major culture revealed thus far within the MLP universe. He has worked directly with both the leaders and future leaders of all groups. When Ember's time is up and he is a full grown dragon (who hopefully has wings by then), his ascension to Dragonlord is going to be both inevitable and necessary.

While I did like Rarity's inclusion, I do think Princess Useless should have been left out.....She did *NOTHING* important. Yes, she cheered Spike on, but all she did besides that was freakout about dragon life. I have to admit though, the look Celestia, Luna and Rarity gave that jerk at the beginning of the episode was priceless!

+DRWolf001 I have to say I enjoyed your review as well as the one by Silver Quill where he speaks of the reversals of masculine and feminine roles. What can be achieved when those opposites cooperate. But I'm curious if ponies and now dragons seem to be among the few species that wear metal armor? Can they not make it or are they just not in the mindset to wear such fairly heavy protection?
@hrafnkelloskarsson63038 жыл бұрын
i think that all the dragons were young be cos they wanted a young dragon to take over so they don't have to do this incredibly often if a old dragon took over

A few things I took note of when watching the episode. 1. Rarity after bringing Spike to Twilight's Castle she was covered in dirt while Spike was spotless. It speaks a lot for Rarity's character to ignore her normal distaste got getting messy when one of her friends is in trouble. 2. Was that scene at the start of the episode with Luna and Celestia saying how there is always somepony that needs their help supposed to be the writers telling us why those two are rarely around when some huge crisis is happening by saying they are dealing with other problems somewhere else at the same time perhaps. It'd be interesting to have an episode where we get to see them dealing with an issue the same time the Mane 6 are dealing with a problem. 3. The fact that Torch refers to the land as Equestria that the pony's chose to call it. One has to wonder if there is some non-aggression agreement between the two species since there doesn't seem to ever be any fear of dragons invading especially with tons of gemstones all over the place. The fact that Garble hasn't attempted to raid the ponies earlier could be that the Dragonlord made a command to prevent such attacks in which case as Overlord Garble could have overturned that command. 4. As a villain Garble has gone up from being a bully doing some hazing to Spike to being downright malicious. In Dragon Quest he mostly just roughed Spike up, but here dropping Spike into an ocean of massive sea creatures and threatening to throw Spike and the others to their death. Compared to most villains, they didn't attempt to kill anyone and even at the end he was not reformed and would be even more motivated to get his revenge on Spike later on.

i think it could go one of 3 ways outcomes 1) their could be a war between some distant lands that could be dragon/pony/other that trys to start a fight with equestria and spike could get the dragons to help in some form or another 2) she could stab spike in the back because of some kind of curse on the gem that causes her to age faster the longer she holds on to it because shes friends with spike and thus to save her life he has to renounce friendship with her 3) the staff could be stolen while spike and the others are their and the main 6 could get framed for the theft because of some replica that even dragons can not tell the difference by eye but rarity can because of her experience with precious gems but that is what i have some up with for plots

Calling it now: ponies gryphons and dragons against chrysalis and the changling army in the season finale.
@ErikButterworth8 жыл бұрын
I'm with you, Dr. Wolf, on how with Equestria now allied with Yakyakistan, Griffonstone, and now the dragons under Princess/Dragon Lord Ember, this could lead to a major battle in the future where the ponies will need the support of the yaks, griffons, and dragons to help them emerge victorious, and don't forget they've also got the support of Discord as well. If Lord Tirek or Queen Chrysalis returns, they won't stand much of a prayer against the coalition of allies now at the beck and call of the Royal Family and the Mane Six should their help be needed.

This one a really good episode and quite exciting and enjoyable. Still I question one thing. Why didn't Twilight use her transformation spell to make herself and Rarity into dragon? Make think easier and Twilight would be able to learn more. Also us fan just really want to see the main six as dragoness.

+Jeff Heithaus Too great of a Magical strain on Twilight, even for two Ponies. Also, Dragons don't do magic in the same way, and as such Twilight might have gotten them stuck by accident. Also, Twilight is too much of a bookworm to do such immersive learning. Sunset for sure, but not Twilight.

I got a feeling queen cheese legs is going to get tamed by Rarity. then the court of friendship shall rule the world. and smite all who oppose with the righteous power of interspecies alliance.

Idea on the summon, I believe that in the dragon tradition in the episode that only teenage to close to adult dragons are allowed to be in the challenge. Rest are not allowed to do so. Due to the areas where you can't see (the adults) is to keep all the focus of what is actually going on.

2:40 That was a minor grip I had... if they ARE teleporting, why didn't Twilight just send Spike to the finish? I know we wouldn't have had an episode otherwise, but some reason why she didn't would've been helpful.

I think a huge world shattering event in which all the races have to unite to survive would be an excellent series finale. It would tie together everything Twilight has accomplished over the series and prove that it was all relevant and necessary. If not for all these friendships everyone would have perished, but they survive because... say it with me now... friendship is magic. :)

Nah I think it would be better as a series finale because it's kind of the climax of like... everything Twilight has been working toward. They would probably have to have like a whole season reminding us who the ponies friends are before hand.

Throughout multiple cultures there have been dragons and I have noticed a few constants among them. Using this I have managed to separate dragons into the next categories. They are five classes Zilla: dragons of land, they run at intense speed, immensely strong, possess armor like skin, by devouring chunks of rock is a can Transform their flame into a lava like substance, there caws are like diamonds allowing them to tunnel, they lack the ability to fly. Leviathan: Lords of the ocean, nothing is faster or stronger in the water, because of their amphibian nature They also possess immense strength and tough hide second only to zilla, they can swim at Mark speed, survived even some of the deepest parts of the ocean, possess sonar, can illuminate parts of their body, they are capable of cutting a wide variety of materials using a very high-pressure jet of heated water from their mouth, are capable of minimal flight and are capable of going on land. Wyvern: Masters of the sky, nothing fly’s faster or more maneuverable, they possess no front legs but their wings are powerful enough to create gale force winds, they are capable of creating sonic booms at max speed, they also possess a sonar and can utilize it as a weapon either by creating a loud sound which can stun most lifeforms or create a sonic cannon from the mouth. Shogun: employers of the rising Sun, long, scaled, serpentine creatures with four legs, their agility and reflexes are second to none, though they possess little to no winds they are capable of flight and also unlike other dragons who can only produce fire (without the aid of an external source) These are capable of producing high voltage electricity, the recess semiaquatic capabilities, and rumor has it can affect the weather. Imperial: the Jacks of all trades, based off the classic European Dragon (like smog) these are dragons capable of all, but not Masters of, the same ability’s the others possess, strong, capable of flight, capable of swimming, they possess no unique talents, but possess little weakness, the only significant strength they possess is that of adaptability.

I believe the Dragon Lord only summoned the younger dragons as the leader in dragon culture has to lead for a long time and must therefore start young, which is why the older dragons weren't there

Great review and insight as always, Dr. Wolf! When you brought up Gilda and the griffons, and then a similar alliance between the ponies and the dragons I got an awesome idea - what if the ponies, griffons and dragons have to team up to fight some SUPER big bad in the 2017 movie?? That would be AMAZING, and they could be setting everything up right now!!

This is probably my favorite Spike episode, and because of that, I'm glad they could finally make an episode that actually worked for the little guy, considering he's not really seen in the spotlight all too often. I'm sure there will be an alliance between dragons and ponies somewhere down the line, I'm certain of it. This world just keeps expending and expanding, and I am glad to see not all dragons from the wasteland are not all that bad. Spike keeps on growing and I'm more than happy to see that, I do hope that he and Ember meet up again in the future. The comedy was pretty enjoyable, but the lesson....I don't know...it does seem like we've heard it all before...so major points down for that. I like it for the world expansion (fanfic writers always enjoy that), growth of character, and the new characters it gives us for many possibilities for future stories and development, the comedy was pretty enjoyable, but the dialogue in some parts as well as the moral of the episode in general...was...well...a rehash and has been done...and that...is a problem for the episode that I can't let slide.

I'm really glad Spike wasn't clumsy comedy character like he was before (Spike at your service, anyone?). Somehow I was worried about that episode, but eventually I liked it a lot. We received a well-written Spike who grown up a lot in that episode, more of the dragon lore (at least in Equestria), some female dragons, new heroine Ember and a quite nice adventure story in these 20 minutes. Yeah, it was really nice!

The day when this episode came out I heard a lot of keyboard typing comming from any nearby building. Made me wonder what was going on. Then later that evening when I sat down and watched this episode, the second Ember was introduced I realized right from the start what was going on. People were writting SpikexEmber fan fics. This is going to be a long summer.

I love this episode. It gave the Fandom more fuel for fanficions with the expansion of the Dragonlands. Along with more shipping fuel as well between Spike and Ember. I feel like spike can be an ambassador for the ponies or even the dragons in equestria in the future. I feel like that can be a good story setup. Maybe he has to travel to their places than equestria to find dragons there.

I really liked this one, despite the foregone conclusion and general lack of jokes - a legitimately good Spike episode (and not just one of the ones that I like, but everyone else hates) with, as you pointed out, excellent building on his character and a solid motivation. The thing that bugged me the most was Twilight's very strict "no interference" policy: "Hey, Twilight, you can fly. Gonna take Spike out to the island? No? He's swimming, then?""Hey, Twilight, Spike is falling to his death. Gonna go catch him? No? All righty, then.""Let's just hope that the other dragon has a change of heart and catches him before he splatters all over the bottom of this volcano." At least Rarity had the excuse of being legitimately useless. But the more I thought about it, the more it actually made sense. One, Twilight was there to learn - and was quite vocal about the fact - meaning that she had to repress any urge to interfere with the situation. Two, I'd like to think that she's finally learned (most notably from the events of the Equestria Games) that she needs to step back and let Spike do shit for himself. It still made her look like kind of a bitch for not helping, though >.>
