Every year after the festival of Raksha Bandhan, a brother-sister pledge of protection and prosperity among Hindus, starts the 40-day festival of Gavari in Udaipur. The Bhil tribe of the region celebrates this festival through which they express their devotion to Lord Shiva and his wife Parvati.
Throughout the festival, the community strictly follows the traditions and stops eating green vegetables, doesn’t sleep on bed and remain barefooted. People of all ages take part in the dance drama performances and use different costumes and colours to represent Lord Shiva and the demon Bhasmasur.
To mark the end of the religious festivities, the community concludes the rituals by immersing the effigy of an elephant in the river. Media India Group attended the Gavari festival this year and interviewed one of the community members playing the role of the demon Bhasmasur during the festival.
