Listening to him talk about the philosophy of drumming has changed how I approach the instrument. He is a purist through and through and I really appreciate that about him. I used to be super into gospel chops, but now I can barely stand them because they all sound identical to each other. No individuality. What I have really grown to appreciate is seeing a gospel chops guy play time in a different genre and use their chops in that situation. Much more musical and beautiful than just listening to people beat the drums to death. Gavins song "19 days" is one of the most beautiful performances I have ever heard on the drums. In my mind that song is what sets Gavin above the crowd and shows his genius.

Gavin is so completely down to earth, and he is SUCH a good drummer - his porcupine tree stuff is just terrific, not just technically, but his parts are in total service to the song. He's the very best kind of musician, IMO.

Interesting that Bill Bruford went through the same realization about drum clinics later in his career. After seeing the super-technical and super-fast players, he too realized "this is not what I do" and stopped doing clinics.

I’ve been blessed to see him in a relatively tiny venue with Pineapple Thief and months later, Porcupine Tree at Radio City just a week ago. I can honestly say that as unmusical as I am, he single-handedly inspired me to pick up sticks. He’s one the most thoughtfully gifted, brilliant musicians who elevates the music without overwhelming it. I’m obsessed with his sound, his style, his mindset. Before him, there was only Danny Carey for me. But the past 15 years has revolved around his sound. Absolute Savage skill and talent. True gem.

Obviously he's a top-tier drummer, but he comes across as very insightful and kind. He had several opportunities to say something bad about people in the interview, but he was always respectful and diplomatic. After drumming for over 50 years myself, he was a goldmine of good music and inspiration when I finally came across his work.

I like Gavin's take on life as it's exactly mine. Life's too short to do things that don't make you happy and that you don't need to do; happiness is not about success but about living the moment, while you're doing what you enjoy and the feeling of contentment and fullfilment it gives you as a consequence. This man is a glorious drummer, a gentleman, a smart person and also very handsome. He's got the full package, amazing.

Because he's not a blazing fast / tech chops guy. That's what people think is amazing nowadays. Not a nice groove or a nice polyrhythm. No SPEED AND WOW... Chris Coleman is obviously an amazing drummer - but I get bored watching him after like 10 seconds.

Really cool interview. Kind of makes me wonder how he would fit in the Steve Morse and the Dixie Dregs circa 1976-78. They used a lot of country/polka rhythms, but there was also a lot of jazz fusion. I was always impressed by Rod Morgenstein's syncopation and odd time signatures(i.e. Country House Shuffle), but perhaps being a Brit, Gavin might have had a hard time being a Dixie Dreg.

for me the best rock drummer and his album 'Cheating The Polygraph' is a stunning big band re-interpretation of Porcupine Tree's music. So glad the band is back as i think Gavin's work with King Crimson, although superb, is not for me as i think the 3 drummer line-up is just a gimmick. Of course Buddy Rich remains 'The Governor'.

I think Gavin would probably agree with you and admit that it's not about all people who play big sets. I've listened to a lot (all) of his interviews online and he really despises gimmicky drumming, which is what I think he meant. But he loves originality and musical drumming, which bozzio definitely is. I would put money on this... I am pretty confident that he would not say that about bozzio. I could be wrong, though.
