The words "calm down" are super iffy when they aren't used in conjunction with an extension to the statement. "I think we both need to calm down and talk about this later" is MUCH better than just telling someone to calm down for example, because often an argument can be peacefully resolved by just taking a while to think things through and let out the stronger emotional reactions in a controlled and harmless way.

I see always open, I watch and enjoy! I used to have lots of "free" time between classes to teach, so I'd just lay my head on the table watching it. It helped cope boredom a lot!

I think saying "Calm Down" can be appropriate depending on the context. I don't think the words themselves are inherently bad to use, but it matters a lot around the situation and the conversation. I think Gavin's example would be suitable use for it, where if they are worried about something outside the relationship or working themselves up. In a context like that I think it is fine. In a context of one person is mad about something in the relationship or the partner, then it can definitely be seen as invalidating that emotion.

I'm in Australia and at an all girls school with a brother school. I hear girls around school talking about drugs and boys from our brother school being suspended for weed. In the past week I heard and I quote "he said to me 'don't worry it's not cocaine'." when referring to a guys snap that got sent to her. It's honestly scary the amount of drug use there is. Vape, weed, alcohol and from what I hear possibly more. Being a teen nowadays is terrifying.

I find "calm down" is frequently used in situations where someone does something, and then doesn't want to deal with repercussions. Certainly you can use those words, but the tone is important.

My upbringing has taught me to avoid conflict at all costs cause I used to be a pit bull and I never backed down even when I was wrong, which felt like never. I slowly learned that in those situations everyone loses, and people are unwilling to admit they're wrong. Nowadays if I feel a heated argument coming on I just back down, agree to disagree and change the subject.

I feel like kids doing drugs or whatever at school is probably a bit overblown to some degree. I'm sure that at almost, if not every school, had kids who did drugs, smoke cigarettes, drink etc, throughout the years. Its like how people think the world is getting worse because they hear more news stories about bad things, but the reality people didn't hear as much about them in the past. Its just the speed of information has changed, so "shocking" stats or "bad" news gets passed along much more quickly due to technology. I will also point out its the same for "good" news and stats, but negativity attracts attention so much easier and quicker.
