After 40,000 km's of the toughest terrain in the country here is everything I have learned about the OME BP-51 remote reservoir shock absorbers. This episode was filmed in 2017 but major developments forced me to delay the upload until PART 2 was ready to be filmed. Major changes have happened and those details will be included in Part 2

Great review Gav, sounds like you've got the adjustments sussed. It's awesome that this technology is filtering into the consumer 4x4 market giving us more options! Lots of us have been enjoying these kinds of suspension adjustability features on our mountain bikes for years, its great that our four wheel drives can benefit as well. Hopefully it might mean longer shock life as well!

Hi Gavin, I've had them for a couple of years now on my FJ and have put them through their paces in all types of terrain (rock/mud/snow/dunes/sand tracks and horribly corrugated dirt roads) they have really impressed me. Ive been in all situations in regards to being unloaded to being at the max gvm for the FJ with fully loaded roof rack etc. My front ones were replaced as they said they were leaking and they had a terrible squeak. The back one's guards haven't fallen off but do cause a squeak when dust gets between the guards and the shock. Love adjusting them to get the right setting for the condition. The main issue with these are installers not adjusting the front coils properly according to the weight in front. This means people with stock vehicles have a rough ride due to the shock topping out all the time.

We experienced this briefly, too much preload with too loose of rebound, so the shock was drooping out too fast while the front end was unloaded and going over a large bump.

Just used my new BP51's on a 2018 VX 200 in the D'entrecasteaux National Park and around Yeagerup. Had a Tough Dog adjustable kit installed before that which had a certain harshness to it. The BP's make the previous kit look pretty average I couldn't believe the performance off-road. Obstacles that I was used to bracing for were dealt with by the new suspension unbelievably well. Smooth and comfortable. I prefer soft/ fast compression and firmer rebound to minimise that bounce/secondary event

That squeak sounded like what I had on my Taco and it was the hood rubber bushings. I just put tape down the squeak went away. I do get a clunk in mine and I think that is common.

I had leaking seals, replaced three shocks in warranty. Regarding corrugated tracks; spent a month in Iceland which is all corrugated and figured that the rebound damp needs to be at zero, otherwise the suspensions compresses as it doesn't rebound as quickly as it compresses. So after a hundred meters or so the ride is really rough. This is when the truck is loaded up and the springs are not pushing back much. That said they ride really well on road, very comfortable, great for crawling, sand, high speed etc. Were fantastic driving through the sahara on rough ground and never fade. Have done 8 hours at 80km/h through rough Moroccan back country, shocks were cool. I am or may not go for Kings when these wear out, not sure they are any better and cost the same.

I adjust my suspension between on road and off road settings but once off road i dont normally touch them again unless im tweaking them a little. It only takes a min regardless :D

Excellent review, exactly what I was looking for because there is so little info out there on these bad boys! Would you say the BP-51s would be an appropriate solution for a 2020 Toyota Tacoma with a very heavy constant load (slide-in camper, sliders, skids, bumper, winch, etc), along side heavy duty leaf springs? Also, do you know if ARB has revised this product as of yet to address the issues you mentioned?

G'day mate, thanks for reaching out. The 2020 Tocama might be to heavy, my 200s is right on the limit I believe, but yes ARB have fixed the issue I highlighted. I've not had any more issues in that area and i'm not aware of anyone else so i think it might be resolved.

Hi Zuhair, I held off answering until today because today ARB inspected the suspension and found the two rear shocks to not be performing as intended. One is leaking fluid aand the other needed 2 mechanics to adjust the compression and rebound. Yikes! I will keep you posted on any developments but right now it looks like i'm in for warranty replacement number two :(

Great review thank you. How do you find these compare to the normal OME set up? I asked two of my local dealers about the BP51 and both said they’re only suitable for very heavy loads and would be a very stiff suspension for my use which is mostly unladen city driving. I definitely want the best all rounder for tar roads as well as dirt track.

The suspension really earns its money in corrugations but its not ideal for all situations or vehicles. If you use your vehicle rarely for 4wding then a standard suspension upgrade would work just fine.

Load is held by the springs, and the front BP51 springs are adjustable for different loads. Ive had 2 sets, the first i got the installers to unwind the spring compression collar as my FJ was stock. Im on my second set and now have a bumper so have left how it come from the factory. In town, you could have it nice and soft, and on the trails or with load you can harden it up. The rear depends on what springs you get which is the same selection as the regular OME setup.

I have the BP-51s since February. I live in Phoenix AZ and try to go off road is often as i can. Im running a 2016 Tacoma TRD off road. I have also noticed some clunking noises that i can't figure out where its coming from. Having watched your video i am wondering if it is the bushings on the BP-51s. Is it easy to inspect visually to see if that is the case? are they easy to replace? Thanks for the videos! Steve

Hi Steve, when I had the bushes start to go on my cruiser they made a distinct squeak that sounded like metal on metal. If your getting clunking noises its absolutely possible the bush has failed but visually that should be easy to see. Is it possible you could be hitting the bump stops ? or, perhaps the upper control arm is hitting the larger springs? Let me know what you find :D

Unfortunately King is too pricey for me but need something that will float over corrugations and don't think an unadjustable shock is for me. Hoping the BP's were going to be perfect.. These BP51s are just as much as kings, approximately $3k for the set of 4. If you want adjustability, the $2-3k range is normal; Fox 2.5 DSC, BP51s, Icon CDCV. Dobinsons would be a more affordable adjustable option in a 2in shock, closer to $2k for the set of 4

But your rig is setup with too much weight for that shock to really show what it can do with an overland setup - that shock is best suited for a prerunner setup on light trucks/suv's unloaded running fast which is why we use that tech of Coilover external bypass shocks desert racing. Take off your winch, front bumper, roof rack and thats what 1500-2000lbs? Overlanders are great for Overlanding and being heavy, prerunners are great for going fast and being light weight. Just a note for anyone just starting out in building a truck. Love your rig, glad you like the product and great video!

Hi there, in the North West where I live the majority of tracks are as you describe. Plus, these shocks are rated to 3.8t and are designed for Aussie conditions. Check out the Canning Stock Route series. I forget which episode but I demonstrate the effectiveness of this suspension setup over heavy washboards :D Thanks for watching :D

"that shock" isn't a universal shock, its specifically built for the application, and accommodating heavier loads. Internal bypass isn't for race shocks only. Winch Bumper and Roofrack is maybe 400lbs, maybe. You're very far off in your assumptions.

Awesome!, but you got the rebound mixed up!, firmer rebound damping is more resistance so slower, and vise versa. For corrugations you defiantly want softest compression and rebound settings.

I've been having issues with my BP-51's. They are just about to have their second warranty replacement sadly. I'm thinking I might try Kings and see if they are better.

Kings? defiantly can't go wrong with KINGs! if you have a look at my channel I defiantly put them through the test and absolutely love them. The good thing about kings is they are very very simple and easy to work with. You can easily revevalve the shock and change the entire damping curve and also spring rates off course. I would also highly recommend that you order them with custom length (16 inch coilover upfront) as opposed to the standard 14 inch. 14 inch standard king coilover does not max out the 200 series cruisers travel. 16 inch coilover will give you much more wheel travel and also have a much better ride height control. 14 inches sag very easily, since they are not long enough. I learned all this the hard way. I also suggest you get 700lb springs as opposed to the standard 600 because of your bull bar. Remember if you dont like the ride quality its all in the valving. I have the 2013 FJ cruiser trail teams edition. I'm interested in adding 2 to 3 inch lift and 33 Inch tires. I will be adding heavy bumpers both front and back. And outfitting it for long range overland travels. I'm liking what I see in your video but I would also like any recommendations for my rig. Thank you for your time.

Quite a few options there depending on your budget, a BP51 kit for your vehicle is going to run approximately $3k. There's plenty of setups that will help with your setup and give you a good ride, you can get into 2.5" shocks for around $2k, which is recommended when running a lot of gear and you want improved control.

@@waynezivanic2726 G'day mate, I wouldn't recommend them for a heavy 200s. A stock 200s would give you incredible performance. I'd suggest if you're over 3.5t fully loaded go with Kings. I have Kings on mine now and I'm 3.76t fully loaded and she sits perfect and rides like a trophy truck now.

Hi Gavin. I have just put BP51s on my 79. I put the camper module on a few weekends ago and going over speed humps was awful I dialed in some extra rebound and compression and it is better but still not perfect. I am glad I have the facility to tweak it to get it right.

My settings wont help you. The total weight of the car, the distrobution of weight north and south. The speed ou drive on track all play a part to the comfort of the ride. However, what i can tell you is that the majority of terrain I encounter is harsh corrugations. WA is a very flat state so I dont find myself rock hopping that often. My vehicle was run with suspension configured to move fast, compress fast (soft) and rebound fast (firm) - onroad in my daily commute it was a little stiff and not as comfortable as it could be. But when fully loaded she was perfect. When driving on a beach or a mountain trail I have a different configuration. I always setup my suspension for the hard work of offroading, not the easy commute. Primarily because its not that easy and convenient to change it all the time with the ammount of 4wding I do. Its very hard to give you settings because i change mine all the time. My vehicle weights 3.8t and that is mostly to the rear (60/40) My settings for a beach or high speed trail are drasticly different to the settings i use on corrugations or a slow rocky track. My suggestions is, start with the defualt settings and drive many types of terrain. Aim to keep your vehicle level and the wheels attatched to the ground at all times and then adjust for traction then comfort. Hope that helps :D

Fox and king are better IMHO, the others I haven't personally tried but people I know would put the BP51s below every brand on your list

I disagree with Gavin, these BP51s are superior to anything Dobinsons offers, they're thicker, they have more fluid, they have equivalent adjustment, and they have internal bypass. Additionally, none of the race brands provide rebound adjustment, nor internal bypass with an off the shelf product. You can of course get king or fox with internal bypass, but that's a very expensive custom order that exceeds the BP51 price point.

Just curious here but when the bottom bush gets flogged out, what is it replaced with? Hopefully not the SAME bush again? On Prado's etc where this is a common issue, people are using the "'SuperPro Bushes" which seem to be much better.... Also, I'm interested to know where during your research for suspension, whether u came across FOX Shocks at all?

Rob Mac yeah absolutely, I felt the same. ARB made a good point when I asked them about that. They said the average 4wder will get 5 years out of the bushes. I got 1 year but I did about 20,000kms of 4wding in that time

I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on these, but my concern with the BP-51 is the rebuild kits.. To make this investment last the life of my truck. I cannot find any info on getting replacement seals and rebuild kits, like I can find for the FOX and Kings... Did it come with any info? Is there a recommend maintenance schedule for them? thx

Strato Scape the only thing you need is the address of your local ARB. If you have an issue they just warranty replace whatever is needed.

G'day mate, they didnt hold up well unfortunately. I ended up replacing them with Kings which turned out to be far superior. Then got an offer I couldnt refuse for my 200s. Waiting for my new vehicle to come off the boat now

Hi Gavin I also live in the Pilbara (Hedland) and have the OME BP51's on the front of my Hilux , below are the issues I have come across with them: They make a thudding sound over small bumps if the compression setting is set to less than half on the indicator. The grooves on the shock to make the adjustments are too shallow, making it easy to strip them out with the flimsy C spanner tool. And finally they are marketed as a fully adjustable shock, which is some part true, but ARB fail to mention that if you need to adjust the spring height (for reasons if you add a winch or dual batteries) you need to remove the entire strut and require specialised tooling to adjust and wind the lock ring on the spring up or down. For the price of them, I expected a little bit more and a smoother ride then what they deliver (no matter what setting they are at.) Great videos by the way, looking forward to your next one.

Dave Downes thats a great point on the shallow grooves. Now you meantion it I have noticed the same and it can sometimes take a few tries before I find the sweet spot with grip.

500km into work wtf what do you do? I’ve got BP-51 on my Hilux I haven’t played with the settings yet, any suggestions on where to start adjusting them? If it felt a little stiff in the front end which would I play with?

I would start at the current settings and make my way over to my favorite local track. Then make small adjustments to find what works for you at the weight you're carrying. It's a vehicle and weight specific thing in combination with your personal preference. Because of that nobody can truly tell you what settings you should be using for your vehicle.

If it was stiff in the front end you could speed up your compression and slow down your rebound by 1 notch and see how that feels for you

It doesnt take long but you do need to climb under the vehicle. Other brands have the adjustment a little more accessible.

@@GavinGillett Yeah I decided to go with the Falcon 3.3 SP2's. I finally pulled the trigger on the Falcons because the ease of adjusting them are just too good to pass up. Although I'm sure that the BP-51's ride way better.

pretty much as well as you want it to, it can be super loose and plush, or it can very tight like a sports car, depending on the settings.

I have not used ironman foam cell shocks but I would also point out that comparing them to a remote reservoir shock is a apple vs oranges debate. Even a cheap remote reservoir shock will out perform foam cells over difficult terrain.

@@morientesmenggu8681 perfect, dont make the same mistake I did though. My 200s is a little heavy. 3.7 fully loaded. Try and keep yours under 3.5t fully loaded. She can be a handfull in the hard stuff when you are pushing 4t.

That reminds me of a story ... a guy would take enough spare parts to replace everything on his vehicle including a spare axle on his 4x4 trips. Sure enough every trip he needed to replace his axel as well as a number of other parts. One day the guy left on another 4x4 trip but this time he forgot to take his spare axle and many of his spare parts. This trip he didnt break his axle or anything else. - Your bike tube suggestion is a great idea but I wouldnt have one on the vehicle. Despite where I travel I'm very lean on parts and prefer to fix what I have onboard with some very basic tools and supplies to save on weight. I will certinly consider a bike tube though, lots of uses for that kind of rubber in a mishap. :D
