The Long Walk, for me, is a metaphor for war. How boys barely out of teen volunteer for it even knowing they will probably die in search of a very vague prize/glory.

I really loved The Stand. I kept getting so engrossed in it that I found myself stressing during other activities, and randomly thinking things like, 'So what are you going to do about this end of the world situation?' 😂. I literally kept forgetting it wasn't my reality, and that never happens to me with any media.

I have the EXACT same feelings about The Stand. While you were first talking about it, I went online and put the Barnes & Noble special edition in my cart cause I was fully convinced that this had to be one of the best books I’d ever read. Then when you got to the second half the book, I remembered how disappointed I was with the direction it took and how it really dropped the ball (for ME)

Out of all the King’s books I’ve read so far, I think The Long walk impacted me the most. Can’t even explain why to be honest, I don’t think it’s his best book or anything, but I went through so many incredibly strong emotions while reading it, and it stayed with me for a long long time after. I found myself still thinking about it days later, and still feeling emotional.

With regards to Garraty from the long walk and the whole deal with his childhood friend Jimmy + his mother + how his love for Jan is portrayed, I know myself and a lot of other fans of the book interpret that as him being either bisexual or gay and repressing those feelings really strongly, since he had that gay experience as a child but his mother's reaction to it left him with this deep feeling of shame and a fear of being publicly exposed for it. Plus there's Stebbins calling him a little bit queer in a scene where everything else he pointed out about Garraty was true, and the way he reacted to McVries in that "he thinks we're queer for each other" moment. I think it's an interesting analysis imo, the book has a lot of layers that are fun to unpack!! I really enjoyed hearing you talk about it, it's one of my favourite King books as well :)

It took us like 3 1/2 weeks to finish it. Oh yeah, it really hit close to Home in 2020 It did kind of meander toward the end as well because Mr. King tended to waffle on at one point

The Long Walk is the only King that I've read multiple times and got more out of it each time. I saw that it was possibly a metaphor for the Vietnam War and watching your buddies die, and the fact that these young men who are still basically kids signed up for a war where they got slaughtered, and if they did survive how would it break them mentally to have gone through that with the survivor's guilt.
