I grew up watching Bing Crosby's Christmas specials every year, and remember watching this final one with a strong sense of an era coming to a close -- a feeling heightened by the weird and now iconic duet with David Bowie. Bing had passed away about a month or so before it aired (died in October, aired in late November, 1977). It was very strange indeed seeing the two of them sing together; as a Bowie fan (visualizing Ziggy Stardust at the time), they couldn't have seemed more polar opposites. The world seemed to shift on its axis that night.....and yet, what came from it all was enduring magic. How lucky we are: Apparently Bing passed only 5 weeks after the duet was filmed.

Great interviews on the summit and touching to hear… Bowie seemed bemused by his reception but the fact is Crosby was impressed in interviews about him and also lucid. Ironically Bing outlived him by age- 74 Vs.69 for Bowie years later. He speaks with rock and roll attitude about an older legend but Bing had the chops to the end. PS : 1977, Conan!

It’s a wonderful piece of music and Bowie was inspired by musicals ‘Inch worm’ is one of his favourite songs 💚💛💜

I can see how Bowie was bemused by this experience, but the reason it keeps coming up was how well they complimented each other. Bowie should be thanking Crosby for greatly enhancing his legacy. He could have pointed out that they had to put this together mutually very quickly with their mutual talent for arranging. In the end it seems like some cheap shots on Bowie’s part.

That's pretty bad David Bowie's putting Bing Crosby down Bing Crosby had a lot of fans are these last Christmas special before he died I was a little kid I used to watch them all the time I was a fan of Bing Crosby I have these movies any songs

I am a fan of Bing and David. I think David is just being honest. Bing died one month after the special was recorded. He was 74 which was quite old back in 1977. Though Bing seems to be quite aware of Bowie and quite well in the radio interviews here. Maybe it was David who was out of his mind, though I think this was a sober period for him.

I'm surprised Bowie wasn't more gracious in his comments about Bing. It doesn't reflect well on David.
