Gay Men's Chorus of Washington confronts protestors with music

As part of our Southern Equality Tour, GMCW had just performed at the Pride Festival in Knoxville, TN. We were already on our buses, headed to our hotel, when we decided to get off the buses and confront these protestors the best way we know how-with music.

Good on you, GMCW! Reminds me of my first performance with the chorus in 1984 at the National Theater in DC. It was an evening of choral music from many groups in the area including a gospel choir and a children's chorus. When we were introduced, the audience roundly booed and hissed that (horror of horrors) gay men were going to sing. By the end of the performance, the audience was on its feet cheering. Music can change attitudes and change minds. May it ever be thus!

I consider myself a christian, and I believe there is nothing more christian than marginalized people standing up for their right to exist and love. The new testament speaks of love for your fellow man, for respect and decency in the treatment for others, for strength in solidarity against oppression. Why is it that religion causes so many arguments and world conflicts? For something that is was created to spread love and peace, it has caused the opposite in many situations. People who think homosexuality is a bad thing target and label these people with such crude words. "Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." Yet, these Christians put the Lord first which I can agree with but you totally ignore the second part. These people are your "neighbors" and they shouldn't be treated any differently than you. Humans view their own religion superior over others when in reality, they are all focused on the same thing. Peace. But...where has it gone...? Great video by the way. 👏 This is actually peaceful and a great thing to witness. How people set hatred aside and work together to silence it.

Tell them! I'm a Christian, but I get so frustrated at the group of people who "claim" to be christians themselves. We need to treat others with love not hatred. There so many people who "think" that they're doing the work of God. “Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name? And then I will declare to them, I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!" Matthew 7:21-23
