korisx to add to that, they both were possibly starting to doubt themselves when they were around the other, the tension between them is clearly shown, especially after the various party/seeing friends scenes, where the communication barrier becomes apparent. So they sort of get fed up with each other, and I'm thinking that night when the hearing guy goes out, he didn't tell his boyfriend where he went, thus causing worry, and kind of the tipping point.

I love that I found the concept that in the end the brown-haired boy takes off his earphones and sound returns again as if he lacked that world without him (the blonde-haired boy). I loved seeing their love; it was beautiful and this film captured all the small details and mastered the art of intimacy in human emotion. I am in love.

for a beginner at ASL, the start of a relationship that is 100% sign is exhausting. the human brain becomes fatigued after about a half hour and needs a break. i was involved with a person who had signed his entire life. for him, it was just a conversation. for me it was learning a new language that uses a different part of the brain to communicate. this guy was amazing, and it was the most exhausting relationship for me. it would have been much easier for me if i had already known ASL before i met him.
@globalman6 жыл бұрын
Could he read lips also? And had he also learned speech? I've lived in Switzerland where in the homosexual society hearing impaired and deaf people are not so invisible as in certain other countries like USA, UK etc. In the USA in general challenge people are more or less isolated and not easily accepted in society. They know it. I had several friends who were hearing impaired plus a good friend of mine met and fell in love a bit like in this film. I would visit them from time to time and even without sign I found it challenging. My friend learned to sign but like you it came later in his life and it is actually more challenging than learning another language. In this circle I was told it works best with a combination of sign and lip reading when communicating with hearing people. But speaking was challenging as it demanded a very different usage of mouth and lips. You don't realise until confronted in such a situation how lazy your mouth movement and enunciation might be.

Yes, it is exhausting, but liberating, at least for me, though my relationship with a Deaf person didn't last that long. It felt good to communicate in that visual/body way... but like any major cultural difference, it pops up in so many ways--the obvious ones, like friends and family and places that are more exclusive to one culture or the other... and subtle things, too, like sound tolerance or sense of humor or subtle assumptions. There's so many factors, too. It helped that he knew Signed English as well as ASL, so we had a bona fide language in common, even if I didn't know all the signs. Of course, signed English is super cumbersome compared to ASL, but it helped at first.

It was hard for both of them. being a deaf person surrounded by people who don't sing and being a hearing person who is not fluent in sing language surrounded by people who only sing. is hard to be part of a conversation. A lot of deaf people don't really have the patience to "sing slower" because they have spent their whole life making all the effort to get by in a world that was built for and by hearing people. Basically Ben is having a hard time fitting in with Aaron's friends and Aaron is like "are you serious? do you think is hard for you?" that's basically it and it's also the reason why most hearing-deaf relationships only work if the hearing person is a CODA or a interpreter

I agree that was one failing. It was just not clear enough why they broke up, I can make an educated guess but it seemed so abrupt and final. And the ending was ambiguous as well since we don't know for sure what was the cause and how bad the blow out really was. Other than that, pretty amazing.

What a gem of a film! The music perfectly matched the story as it unfolded. I only regret that I just discovered the existence of this film now, otherwise I’d have gladly donated when they were asking for it. The relationship between the 2 main characters is beautifully depicted, romantic yet realistic (they’re shown to have their disagreements along the way before the break up and both feeling a bit out of place at parties with their deaf/hearing friends). I noticed in the teaser that there is extra footage of Michael about to kiss Aaron but he pushes him away, obviously still not over his separation from Ben). Aaron and Ben tried to move on by dating people who belong to the “same world” as them but clearly didn’t work out. I like the way it ended, it was understated and hopeful, their smiles said a lot, they were still deeply in love with one another and pretty much everything points that they would give their relationship another try, this time more aware that despite all the work, it was worth it. The time they spent apart made them realise that.

loved it! loved that there was no subtitles because you got to experience their journey in the way that they experience it, for Aaron you experience his world without sound and for Ben you got to feel his frustration in not knowing what the hack anyone what signing. LOL It was just beautiful.

The first I saw Signs of love, I think they'll demonstrate love between two men beautifully, and the next second the scene starts it's about Sign language love. I'm so glad to watch this beautiful film. ❤️🏳️🌈🤟

Thank You for this lovely movie. The sound is equal to what is happening. Without music I would not have seen it to the end. Not at all. but with the music I could “understand” and “follow” the story. Thank You!

The fact that they didn't say anything didn't matter because I can tell by there body language that there in love and that's something they did with out words

But that's not true. They used words the entire time.

Well, since I can’t read ASL, I have no idea what their argument was about and why the split.

Exquisitely done! A masterpiece if you ask me; and even if you don't ask. The powerful emotions depicted throughout the film is echoed by the soundtrack so beautifully and so well-coordinated that you feel THAT film and THAT music were destined to be together--like the two characters. Not having subtitles makes film a character within itself. The lack of subtitles puts the hearing viewer and the hearing impaired viewer on equal ground with the characters all of whom are destined to understand each other at the end--another echo of the film's content. This should be viewed, in its entirety, without pausing to think, because that's how life comes at you. If you missed something, then watch it again. The fixated look the two characters share at the end poinetly bookends the film and gives rise to possibilities of new begins . . . at the end. Has any short film ever had a sequel? I wonder.
