Essentialism is to reduce genders, races, linguistic and religious communities and the like to certain generalised and reductionist types: eg "The Orientals are lazy" or "Women are emotional by nature." These formulations actually reveal the prejudices and rather heuristic understanding of the formuliser rather than revealing the truth about the formulised. So critical theory in general and feminism, postmodernism and postcolonial ism in particular resist and opposed essentialism of all kinds.
However, the celebrated poststructuralist and postcolonial scholar Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak has something to say in favour of essentialism of a certain kind. Pl listen to the talk to explore further on this note.
