hi adam! I think its very importance to obtain the typical sound... the sympathetics can be imagned as a built in reverb device - if in tune, they sustain the played notes and add a wonderful space. They are tuned: ma, pa, dha, ni, sa, sa, re, ga, ma, pa, dha , ni sa, re, ga means: diatonic, the first tuned as the main string, then the base not (octave above the drones is doubled) and the last symp. is the third above the high sa.

What a wonderful way to see this instrument played for the first time. Hauntingly ethereal. Thank you for posting this. Just so I understand, is the 'drone' reverberating through this whole composition initially created and sustained on your esraj over the melody? It appears so, but the camera frame was too high to see your bow moving across the strings. I've always loved Indian music, and I'm curious to start exploring its fundamentals. Any recommendations for videos/dvd/books as a gentle introduction? If all of this sound comes from one instrument, I am helplessly hooked. You play beautifully.

***** This originated from India , and that too south west Bengal to be precise. Afghan to Bangladesh, All are considered Indo- because the whole area was once culturally linked and as India has cultural ties with many of its neighbor It is assumed that all instruments should be known as Indian. Even Sitar is known as Indian.
@TheAfghan72

Not Interested I'm asking this because i was reading about it on wikipedia which said this; *The esraj is found in the east and central areas, particularly Bengal (Bangladesh and Indian states of West Bengal and Tripura) and it is used in a somewhat wider variety of musical styles than is the dilruba. Originally an Afghan Instrument it first appeared in the region during the Pashtun rule of Northern India* en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esraj SO it might be, also we use this instrument in Afghan music as well. But i have to disagree with you that Afghanistan is indo, its not, it is in central asia and has a very diffrent culture.
