The mutually exclusive condition that makes all the alleged deal talks fail is whether Hamas gets to survive this war. After October 7, it became clear that Hamas cannot be allowed to remain to pose a threat to Israel's population. From the beginning of the war, Israel has offered to end the war with the condition that Hamas surrenders. If Hamas doesn't surrender, Israel doesn't put "end the war" on the table, and instead offers a temporary ceasefire, like there was in the big hostage release deal in November 2023. Hamas' top priority is Hamas, not Gaza's wellbeing. Hamas officials had officially and repeatedly said that they would not accept a deal without a permanent and immediate cessation of fighting and the retreat of Israel's forces. In layman's terms, that means they won't accept a deal where they don't survive. No temporary ceasefire will be accepted. They don't care that Gaza is being destroyed or that the are civilian casualties as a result of the war. And that's the crux of it all. Hamas can say that Israel keeps demanding more conditions, but ultimately Hamas would refuse any deal the Israel can afford to offer. It's unclear how the talks can advance or be close to anything, if they usually fall at the one primary condition of Hamas' survival. It sounds like nonsense. I'm going to predict the following (which has happened before): Hamas is going to keep stating the deal is close, but then it will say no and claim it was because of Israel's insistence on a minor detail. They'll do so to fool emotional Israelis and make them think the issue is with the Israeli leadership rather than the actual terrorists.
